Jets Cut Three: WR Justin McCareins, CB Andre Dyson, OG Adrien Clarke
It seems that fateful day has finally come … with the league’s fiscal calendar about to reset on Friday, the Jets have announced cutting three players that the handwriting has been on the wall for a while now. Justin McCareins, Andre Dyson and Adrien Clarke.
Justin McCareins — After trading a second round pick in 2004 Draft (which the Jets could have used for Julius Jones, Travis LaBoy … Bob Sanders) the Jets got a player who had basically already seen his statistical season, and was never the right fit in New York, under any offensive scheme and with any QB .. big arm or no.
Over the past two years, McCareins had been an afterthought, until he showed us in games against Baltimore and other just why he was an afterthought. McCareins not being on the roster will free up a couple more million dollars apparently, so that’s a good thing which indicates to me the Jets are planning to be busy. Apparently from what our spies deep inside the organization tell us, when the Jets handed McCareins his pink slip … well you know the rest of the joke.
Andre Dyson — After signing on in 2006 as a free agent, Dyson’s best game was his opener in Tennessee where he had two picks. Dyson was a hold the fort guy in 2006, until he got injured late in the season. Since then, Dyson’s play has slowly declined to the point where he gave up a long touchdown and was on one end of a miscommunication a totally blown coverage for a touchdown. I don’t think that this move means that the Jets signing of Asante is a slam dunk, just that they think they have good enough options at the #2 between Barrett, Miller, Coleman and maybe even Poteat (who I imagine will re-sign). Cutting him is an indication that the team has gone a different direction, as there’s really no cap savings for cutting him from what I read.
Adrien Clarke — In my mind, the single biggest on-the-field culprit of the 2007 debacle that was an Offensive Line. Clarke’s playing time lessened at the end of the season, and rightfully so. Credited for allowing more than 5 sacks as an interior linemen is criminal and that’s just what Clark did in 2007. Unless Big Baby Bender has grown up a lot in the offseason, the Jets sound primed to make a push for a Guard like Alan Faneca or a Tackle like Flozell Adams come Friday …
Three things:
1) The new cap year can’t get here fast enough for me!
2) If someone can put together a compilation of McCareins dropped passes to the song “You Had a Bad Day” on YouTube, I would be eternally indebted to you.
3) Hat tip to sec108 for noting this in the comments …

Finally McCareins is gone! Ding Dong the Witch is Done!
The Patriots have cut Rosevelt Colvin, he could be a nice addition of the outside.

Pats release Colvin as well…

Colvin is interesting but always viewed him as injury prone, not worth any significant injuries. THANK GOD MCCARIENS IS GONE. Seems like a hard worked and decent guy but I couldnt take another year of him.
McCareins actually played well for us in 2004… then went quickly downhill in 2005, and never returned to form. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Titans re-sign him now that Heimerdinger is back.
yeah…thank god mcdrops is gone…i’ve been wanting him off the team for 2 years now…finally he’s gone…the other 2 really weren’t a surprise…who else can we banish…
someone get rid of david barett! according to madden at least, he’s supposed to make around $4mil this year and $5 + in coming years! For a crap CB! WHY?
pz…im sure barrets time will come…i would like to know what kind of cap hit we will take if they cut him now…just my thoughts…
My stomach is starting to feel a little bit better already!!!
Have been waiting for the day Justin was cut for seemingly forever. this guy was a bust from the start, i don’t care what the stats say. aside from the drops, he was just generally a non-difference maker. which is fine, if you at least play with some heart…go over the middle…throw some blocks. this guy just went through the motions. he can take the alligator arms and crisco hands to tenn or whomever else wishes such things upon themselves.
McCariens cut? Thank god.
McCareins played with heart, you can’t pick an instance where he didn’t. He was just a bad sign and deal by the old F.O. We wouldn’t have hated him so much if he wasnt billed as difference maker. He was a decent player who took advantage of a horrible contract offer. He just wasn’t what we wanted. Don’t hate the guy for that.
McDrops is gone. You know what would scare me if we signed Troy Williamson!!! Eek.
But McDrops went for a 2nd rounder and was drafted in the 4th
But Williamson went for a 4th or 6th rdr and was drafted 7th overrall!
TALK ABOUT VALUE!
Barrett quite possibly may be the worst corner I have ever seen. The fact that they cut dyson before him is unexplainable to me. I’m not trying to say Dyson is Deon Sanders, but you guys can’t tell me everytime you sat in that stadium and saw Barrett lined up against a halfway decent receiver and cringed… before the snap!
The best play McCareins made while on the field with the Jets was wearing a Tennessee Uniform. He looked real good.
I nearly puked in Baltimore Ravens stadium, watching him and our captain drop passes that would’ve given us a win. Time to move on. Feature Cotchery…hard working, humble, team guy. We don’t need any more dissension and receivers who don’t have alligator arms are a good thing. Build from inside out. If we don’t keep Clemen’s / Pennington Ribs bruise free, it won’t matter who are receivers are anyway.
the future is BRIGHT boys….the future is BRIGHT!

It is rare that humble wins in the world of sports GreekTurtle. I don’t care how nor what these players are, how much money they make and what their lifestyles are. I want to WIN. They are not my children so they can be as volitale as they want to be and still win just ask Deion Sanders, Warren Sapp, Ray Lewis, Michael Irvin, Lawrence Taylor, all of 85 Bears, and many many more.
The intial McCariens signing wasn’t a poor front office choice. If I remember correctly, that year the receiving corps featured Curtis Conway, an aging Wayne Chrebet, an unproven Santana Moss and Anthony Becht. He was a young big reciever coming off a decent year. They took a risk and it was a great choice to let him go.
just think….after TWO YEARS and we’re STILL cleaning up HERMS mess.
Apparently, Dyson did NOT let the door hit him on his way out. “Now you know how Plaxico Burress feels” said the door.
As for McCareins, “had a bad day” doesn’t quite do it. Has anyone ever done a song called “had a bad career”. “Oops, I did it again” might be more appropriate. Or “Born Slippy”. Or “Can’t Hold On”. Or the little known cult classic “I don’t care if he has offered to contribute to special teams, Eric, the guy couldn’t catch a cold (except in preseason)”. And Matt – I can recall several examples of where J-Mac didn’t contest an underthrown pass, leading to an interception, which constitutes a lack of heart in my book.
Oh, and as bad as Barrett is (although he bizarrely always seems to do better when matched up with someone good), he’s still better than Justin Miller in my book. But, since you asked, I calculate that the cap hit on Barrett is less than his salary, so the Jets would save $2-3m by cutting him. (Cutting Miller has hardly any effect on the cap).
What are the chances of any of these three being on a roster come opening day? For Clarke, I would say no chance whatsoever, but the others might stick somewhere with a lower salary and the hope that “a change of scenery will do them good”.
KC it takes at least 3-4 years before a previous regime’s mess is finally cleaned up completely. I think Year 3 of the Mangini Era will be it’s true defining point in where this franchise is going. Certainly we have mixed results (great draft, poor FA signings, disgruntled employee fiasco and poor subsequent replacement), but this year is huge in terms of player chemistry and team culture. The presure is on Mike and Eric. Let’s hope they can come through.
I was made very happy by the cutting of McCareins
Now they only have about 35 more players to cut, and then we will be a good team, this roster has very little to be optomistic about. Besides L Washington, T Jones, Mangold, Ferguson, Rhodes, Harris, and Revis who would you really be sad to see go?
Bassett, could you explain to me the fascination with overpaying aging, declining skills, name players as opposed to signing younger players with more upside? I hope you are completely wrong when you write:
“the Jets sound primed to make a push for a Guard like Alan Faneca or a Tackle like Flozell Adams come Friday ”
Players like Justin Smiley and Jake Scott (or both so we can cut Moore) will almost certainly be around to contribute longer and better than Faneca or Adams. Plus, there are probably better RT at our second pick in the draft than Adams (at this point in his career) or Max Starks.
Looking at the current FA crop and draft, I think the best moves would be to sign one or two younger guards and a CB (probably Gay over Samuel). Score a RT with our second pick and maybe a safety in the draft or if one comes free in FA, and we will be set for the next five years on the OL and DBs.
The only other FA I would be interested in is a stud younger WR if is available for trade or is a salary cap casualty. So saving money for that would be fine too. We could then trade or cut Coles and let him find out his true market value.
While our pass rush and rush D will still be inept, no one with half a brain thinks we will be competing with the Colts or Pats after only one off season anyway.
harlan
As usual, harlan knows how to take care of bidness!
Signing aging big-name players during a rebuilding phase only keeps the bandwagon fans and media happy, but often does little to fix the team long-term. I’m encouraged that this FO seems to ignore what the media stirs a certain element of the fan base into thinking and has taken its lumps in the process. Hopefully now that will lead to long-term success.
I agree Harlan. I’d like to see the Jets make a push for Smiley assuming they think his shoulders will not be an issue. Coming off of an injury, he may come relatively cheaply for a guy who could have a lot of value as a drive-blocking guard.
On another note, the Detroit News is reporting that the Lions are getting close to making a deal that would send Shaun Rogers to Denver. This might kill two options for the Jets as Rogers would be in Denver and Denver would have gotten the DT they are looking for. This might open up the Jets to make a play for Roy Williams if Detroit is still interested in Vilma. Somehow, I don’t think the Jets FO was ever really interested in Rogers.
mccarriens and david barrett were both players that were signed as an overraction to losing the big fish. coles left and we needed something to make a big splash. winfeilds wife chose minnasota over long island, so our guys over paid for david barrett.
mccarriens though did play with heart. when he wasn’t on the feild, he was chomping to do anything on special teams, and as i remember made a few good plays. so not quite as we expected and missed what could have ben some key plays would be a fair asessment rather than what its being made out to be.

Harlan, I agree that Flozell is too old to help us in a couple of years when we’re hopefully contending, but Faneca should have 4-5 good years left. He’s in much better shape than Flozell. His run blocking is still top-notch, and while he’s lost a half-step in pass protection, he would be next to 2 guys with uncommon agility and quickness in Brick and Mangold.
I think the other big benefit of Faneca beyond run blocking is that he’s a tough SOB and a smart competitor. I’d love to see his intensity rub off on the rest of our line. If we can get him and still have money for a mid-tier FA like Gay and for our draft picks, I’m all for it.
