D.Rose is Rambling: The Mangenius

by Bassett on February 27th, 2008 at 2:29 pm

If there’s one thing we know about our very own D.Rose, it’s that he’ll tell you what he thinks. We can vouch for that fact as we saw him last summer bust on Jets owner Woody Johnson for the questionable color of his helicopter. Woody heard the quip, nervously acknowledged it and ran away. In this new column, D will be using the space as an opportunity speak his mind, from the perspective of a die-hard Jet fan, tailgater and ticketholder in Section 321. Enjoy.

People on the blog keep saying that this is a make or break year for our rotund coach, (I heard he put on 20 lbs. I must say I like my football coaches’ fat! I made this known at training camp). I must say I think it would be foolish to fire this regime after three years. I believe in the staff, I think they are young and will make some mistakes, (Pete Kendall), but that is to be expected. As a younger fan (I am 25) I am willing to put my faith in these two guys. Look at what we’ve dealt with over the last 10 years. Besides the Tuna years, it was pretty bleak. I mean, Herm was a great quote, but I feel he wasn’t able to push us to the next level.  I think that with time, patience, and a good QB we will be able to compete.
I think the biggest factor that shows me this group knows what they’re doing is the draft. I think we’ve had good drafts and decent free agent signings. People say we overpaid for KVO, but at that point when installing a new defense they needed to pay to bring some people in who had experience. KVO was awful, but there was no indication that he was going to drop off so rapidly. Revis, Harris, Brick (maybe) have proven to be quality players. I like Elam, he gives the defense a big hitter, and as he grows into starting I think his penalties and mistakes will decline.

Let’s be honest with ourselves, until we get the pieces we are not going to compete. I hear people talking about adding two or three pieces and us being a playoff contender. I would say lets take a step back and realize the focus of the FO is building for the long term. Our team didn’t quit or whine during the season and to me that says a lot about Mangini and the team he is building. While there were big time mistakes, (Clarke) I think overall this team is going in the right direction. So let’s be rational and realize that the boys have a plan and this plan seems to be getting us younger and hopefully more talented. Don’t forget we’re finally managing our cap with some long term plan and that will help us to build our team.

Let’s give them a break and get ready for the draft! Which should include a JetsBlog after party!

great great piece. And I think we are going to mighty happy after the FA signings and draft.

you gotta like what the braintrust has done in the draft so far. they’ve had a couple misses, but revis and harris are both looking like real studs. We’ll see how this free agent period goes, but i agree wtih D.Rose that under no circumstances should their regime end after year 3. I hope that Woody has the brains to keep these guys in place.

Say what you will about Herm, but he got us to the playoffs 3 out of his five years *. (should really be looked at as 3 out of 4 because BB was leading passer in his last season).

I am a season ticket holder as well. My father acquired tickets when we were the Titans. I remember enjoying a lot of the Herm years.

2001: started season 3-3 and finished 10-6. Lost to Oakland who went to SB.
2002: started 2-5 and won the division. Last week against GB and the demolition of Indy (first round) were a hell of a time.

    2003: marred by QB issues
2004: 10-6 Doug Brien misses two FGs against Pitt.
    2005: CP falls again.

Not a die hard Herm fan, but sometimes it is tough to argue with the #s. Sure I got agita at most of those games, but that is part of being a Jets fan. My only point is that despite some bad calls and wasted time outs the team was rather successful under Edwards.

I also have faith in this FO. Unlike some fellow JETS fans, I am not pessimistic about the prospect of losing D Rob or Vilma. As you mentioned, Harris and Revis are studs. I look forward to an interesting off season; between the draft and free agency, I think we can begin to build a good team.

Get Gholston and make him play the hybrid OLB/DE position. I would feel very comfortable with Gholston, Harris, Barton and the invisible Thomas (he will be able to hide among this pack). Biggest concern is O LINE.

Dont need a D-Mac. Look at teams like the Giants, Denver, Green Bay and heck, even the Raiders. If your o line can run block, you can put almost anyone back there. TJ ran for 1100 behind a terrible line. Imagine what he could do if we solidified that line.

    D. Rose, I too am a relatively young Jet fan, 24, and from watching the other teams around the league I think it is clear that the Jets are attempting to build this team the right way. Looking at the franchises that are successful in this league year in and year out, you see teams that have stuck with a coaching staff and built from the draft in their early years. Yes, some decisions may hurt the Jets now, but in 3-4 years when Harris, Revis, Mangold and Ferguson are entering the prime of their careers I think we will see that patience will pay off.

I have about 13 more years of Jets fandom on you and when you were born, I suffered through the near misses of Jets teams with Richard Todd, Ken O’Brien, Freeman, etc. Maybe that’s why I am a little less patient, especially when realizing I came this close to being at Weslyan at the same time as Mangini (i.e., knowing I could’ve potentially chugged beers at a dorm party with the HC of the Jets gives me some weird sense of empowerment).

Yeah, yeah, be patient, it all sounds good, but then the losses pile up…next thing you know, Mangini’s gone and Tannenbaum can’t right the ship, then he’s gone and we’re starting over…sorry kids, if you are not getting better, you are falling behind. Draft has been good, free agency has been incompetent and mismanaged. Last year they tried the old Belichek trick and brought in 50 DE’s who “love the game” but they were also 50 FA’s who “play like crap.” The Pats filled some positions with that strategy but when it comes to the edge rushers, they recognize that you have to swallow hard and pay top dollar (Colvin, Thomas). Tannenbaum to me seems stupid and a typical NFL trend-hopping copycat executive. We’ll know a lot more in a few weeks, but I suspect that Tannenbaum is going to cost a good coach his job.

  7. avatar Mars says:

Joe, Tannenbaum seems extra cautious in FA. His “bad” singings were KVO, maybe Coleman and resiging BT. This has created the cap room we have now that everyone is screaming for him to overpay to get FAs in. I don’t mind what he has done so far, it would make me feel better if I saw him grab a top FA and not overpay but with all the extra cap room this year I doubt it is going to haoppen. They’ll probably sign some mid-tier FAs (Gay for example instead of Samuels) and continue to build through the draft. Rework sopme contracts to front load them and “transfer” tha cap room to next year where it can hopefully be used. I think you should only overpay if you think the 1 or 2 guys will put you over the top, otherwise you hamstring your future for some short-term success that will not include the ultimate goal of winning a SB.

Sean, Good Post. Rebuilding is becoming a thing of the past. It is so easy to pick up players, between free agency and the draft. Talented Juniors are choosing the big bucks and entering the draft in droves. It is also very easy to lose players. Teams go from 4-12 one year to the Superbowl the next and vice versa. A good GM, cap person, and coaching staff is the key. Tangini did a horrible job with the O-Line and totally screwed up the defense, in their desire to play a 3-4. As I have mentioned in many posts, their players have all been playing out of position. As a result, Vilma and D-Rob, two inpsirational players and people, will have to move on. I don’t give Tangini much more time. It is their job to put together a winning team. Currently, they are forgetting the QB position. As much as I love Chad, he is a different player, post surgery. KC didn’t show me enough. That being said, I would love to pick up Anderson from Cleveland. They say it would take a number 1 & 3 but, maybe we could work a trade. Regardless, we need to win this year. The Knicks need to rebuild, we need Tangini to step up.

HARVLIS – YOU CONFIRMED WHAT JOE SAID !!! RIGHT ON !!!

  12. avatar SackDance99 says:

Harvlis, I agree. Sooner or later, the Jets will have to address QB. I’m not a big Anderson fan, but it’s a good thought. Eventually, Cleveland will have to deal either Quinn or Anderson. Atlanta’s price for Schaub was a flip of no. 1 picks and the next year’s no. 2. IMO, not a bad price for Quinn (although, he only measured in as a pro at 6-3…maybe his head shrunk).

  13. avatar SackDance99 says:

Actually, Quinn measured in at 6-2, so I take back everything I said…lol.

  14. avatar SackDance99 says:

Wikipedia has Quinn listed at 6-4, ESPN at 6-3 and NFL.com at 6-2. If he’s really 6-2, then I think we may know why he slipped in the draft. How does a guy lose 2″ from ND to Cleveland? In any event, to get back to this thread, I like Mangini/Tannenbaum and while rebuilding is getting tiresome, the Jets need 3 LBs, an LG and RT, a tall WR. a pass-catching TE, an adequate CB to match with Revis, an upgrade at DE and, to most fans, an NT upgrade. Not to mention a competent NFL QB. With all those needs, it’s hard not to consider this a team in transition. If the Jets make the playoffs this season and that means Mangini will make the playoffs with a flawed team 2 out of 3 seasons. I would give him back the “genius” nickname. But, that being said, I don’t want to see another 4-12 season.
