mbi…i read it was peter king who called him finess and that he wasn’t worth the money…i wont pay him 11 million a year even if he was/wasn’t finess…i just dont think coners are worth that kind of money…just my thoughts…

If you can rush the passer then your DB’s look good (NY Giants). We cannot rush the passer so to spend $$tupid money on a DB is just $$tupid. Let’s figure out how to get the to the QB and anybody blogging here can make a play!

j wins the Kewpie doll for his assessment of value.
OTOH, P King, if in fact the quote was his, shows how capricious inept media assessments can be. Samuel came a held-interception away from being a super bowl hero. I realize that close has no place in football, but to call Samuel abused in game with few offensive TDs and a serendipitous catch and an unexpected missed pick, seems a bit capricious to me.
I guess we have to revise the old war horse, those who can do, those who can’t teach and those who don’t understand what is in front of their eyes report.

Yes, the Giants seem very taken with that philosophy, which explains why they’ve drafted corners in the second and first round the last two seasons and why they are trying to trade for DeAngelo Hall and Marcus Trufant. They clearly think that anyone back there can make a play. Or wait a minute…
-
Thanks Dakar, your right it was Peter King. Harlan I dont hink his exact words were “abused” but thats basically what he was saying. I think the mangini-samuel connection and sticking it to the Pats make NY a good fit for samuel and to be honest I would definitely welcome him with open arms, especially if one of the trades for S Rogers or Jenkins works out. Samuels has killed the jets many times, I think his best attribute is his preparation and his ability to jump routes. Also I think I would rather spend $$ on him rather than 31 year old Faneca. Just my thoughts on the current sittuation.

SeanMac, do not forget that Sam Madison has a superbowl ring, adding those corners only makes them better, but they started with their front 7, not their back 4!
-
They also had a mediocre pass defense for most of the season. The Giants are a particularly dubious model to get all excited about- they were an average defense last year, an average defense this year that got hot at the right time, and they’re probably going to be an average defense next year unless they upgrade (which is why they’re so hot for corners).
There’s no “you need to start with this before you start with that!” No, you don’t. You need quality front seven players and you need quality back four players, and the order in which you pursue them should be based on the quality of the players that are available to you.
-
SeanMac,
Nice rebuttal, but imagine if they did not have a pass rush, like us. Revis would be a rookie all pro player if the opposing QB did not have all day to find a receiver. The front 7 makes the back 4, you cannot have a good defense without a good front 7. How many times have you seen a DB on a good defense leave via free agency to go to another team and then get cut 2 years later. (Pittsburgh, Ravens, Dallas etc.)

Why is everyone concerned that Faneca is 31? He’s a Pro Bowl-caliber talent in a position of great need for us. Most guards can play at a high level well into their 30′s. I’d take him in a minute to mentor D’Brick and Mangold. And, if we get “only” 5 years out of him, that’s fine. My main concern with him would be salary, not age. But he’s rumored to be off to ‘Zona.

I’m with seanmac on this. The Giants run a 4-3 and the pass rush is expected to come from the 4 down linemen and they needed that pass rush because their secondary and LBs were terrible at pass coverage. The Pats had a stupid game plan and were a missed INT and an unbelievable catch away from losing a Super Bowl that they had won on the field. If the Jets get Samuel, they will be able to blitz more, which is the way a pass rush is generated by a 3-4 defense. Different defenses, different needs.
-
j,
I tell you what. You let me know when Osi, Justin Tuck and the rest of the Giants front four becomes available and I’ll get back to you. In the meanwhile, all you would be doing is paying top dollar for mediocre players (or drafting players higher than their production merits) based on the fact that you want a pass rush this second. What part of that is attractive to you?
-
SeanMac,
Read my first entry, I am not a fan of overpaying for FA players, they do not seem to be able to duplicate the success that got them the big$$. My point is that if we cannot stop the run, or rush the passer what help would an overpriced FA corner do for us. I would like to see more girth in the middle if the 3-4 is the D, Harris is a very good LB, but will always be getting banged around unless we can get a stopper at NT.
By the way, why can’t we draft quality D linemen? S.Ellis, and Abraham were the last 2, 8 years ago!
I think that the front office has a problem of trying to force the 3-4 on personel that is better suited to a 4-3. We could have gotten rid of Vilma last year before he became damaged goods, and Ellis who can dominate in the 4-3 is being wasted in the 3-4. -
Sean Mac,
The only reason that I want a pass rush this second is that I have been a season ticket holder since 1970, and I have seen what a dominant pass rush can do for the rest of the D! -
They’re not trying to force the 3-4 on personnel that is suited to a 4-3; they’re trying to get rid of the 4-3 personnel and replace them with 3-4 personnel. That’s a perfectly legitimate way to go about things.
-
Maybe so, but what about Vilma, why not trade him last year after they saw him getting his @#$% kicked 10 yards downfield?
-
They looked into it- remember the rumors he was heading to Washington? They also drafted his replacement. These things don’t happen overnight. They had bad luck in that Vilma got hurt; aside from that, he didn’t do anything that would negate his value to a 4-3 team. You can see that by the fact that teams are lining up to talk to the Jets about him.
-
I have always said we are one of the best offseason teams in the league!
-
any way you want to look at this, the defense needs some sort of natural pass rusher. i can’t say for sure, but wasn’t the sack total throught the 1st 6 games = 3 sacks. it did improve later in the year, don’t know if that had to do with harris or adjustments, but it just seems like it would benefit every one more if the coaching staff didn’t have to get so creative just to generate some pressure on the QB.
speaking of the SB, many people continue to talk a/b the giants and how they got all that pressure with their front 4 and disguised LB’s, i think to compare more of what our team needs is what adulius thomas did. it seemed he was more like an LT in that game. the O line he was coming but couldn’t stop him.
Lee Suggs was that guy for us. maybe next year.

On the Samuels story I heard that Philly was going to be a big player as well. I beleive I heard that on ESPN that they were planning to offer a 5 year $55M, which whoever was speaking thought that was overpaying for a “finesse” corner who got abused in the superbowl.
