UPDATE: Looks like I broke the story that Michael Smith couldn’t. Mark this moment down in history. I was just too timid when I thought about questioning Michael Smith and his rugged handsomeness to really go with it.
Rock triangulates what I heard following, saying that Rick Smith said ESPN’s story is a “false report.”
As an FYI, I sent a note to Faneca’s agency, and received a terse reply stating that nothing was imminent, three minutes before Michael Smith broke the story on ESPN.
My night out is a little later than anticipated, so here’s the update as far as ESPN’s Michael Smith knows:
The New York Jets and guard Alan Faneca have agreed in principle to a four-year, $32 million deal that includes roughly $23 million in guarantees, ESPN’s Michael Smith reports. Faneca is expected to travel to New York this weekend when the deal will be finalized.
So the size of the deal didn’t change, just the amount of the guarantees. As long as he’s healthy, Tannenbaum looks like a genius.
To use a baseball analogy, think of Faneca as an excellent hitting short stop, or catcher. Sure they might be paid to do other things, but if they can hit too, their value skyrockets. With Faneca, it’s the same thing, he’s excellent in run support and pass protection, and immediately makes the left side of the line worlds better. We had written months ago that if the Jets wanted to compete, they needed to get Brick some help, and we’re glad that they agree. The Browns were able to improve from one of the worst units in the league (31st) to best (6th) with the help of a better line, and a QB who could throw deep. The Jets now effectively have the core of both, but still need to tweak with the line at RT.

now all we need to do is either get jake long and start him at right tackle or get vernon ghoulston
-
No! No Jake Long or Vernon Gholston! DARREN MCFADDEN (and trade Thomas Jones on draft day for Damien Woody)
-
Pablo, I like your thinking, bit trading TJ would give us a big cap hit I believe. I am hoping for McFadden as well, since there is no chance for Chris Long. Gholston reminds me too much of Bryan Thomas.

What a great day to be a Jets fan…
-
awesome. im extremely pleased with Tannenbaum’s moves thus far. jenkins and faneca will be huge upgrades in two very needy areas. david harris will step in just fine for vilma as well. its unfortunate we didnt land samuel, but at least he left the pats and even better the afc. lets keep the ball rolling here and snag another guy or two and go strong into the draft. John Clayton has also reported that Randy Moss is listening to other teams and isnt close to a deal with the Pats at this point.
-
C’mon, Please no Mcfadden at 6 and if he is available at that spot Tangini should consider trading out (ie Dallas’ 2 first rounders) and stockpile picks, so they can draft a RT and a pass rushing OLB or just draft Gholston. We already have a solid backfield, imagine what Jones can rush for behind a solid line(assuming Faneca is signed), he had over 1000 yds last year with that swiss cheese of a line, it both stunk and had lots of holes.
-
i was told trading t.jones will be a $9 million cap hit…so no way to trading tj…plus he’s gonna do alot better this year with an o-line in front of him…draft gholston and another pass rusher in the 1st 2 rounds…then draft a RT in the 3rd…just my thoughts…
-
A great day indeed. I do have to ask though, whats up with the Vilma trade? Can we agree that it probably would have been smarter to hold on to him a little longer and let a market perhaps develop as he showed improved health?
-
TOO BAD DON BANKS OF CNNSI.COM HATES ALL 3 OF OUR MOVES….WHAT A TOOL.
SAYS VILMA MIGHT HAVE BEEN BETTER WITH A BETTER NOSE TACKLE….HELLO?? DAVID HARRIS TORE IT UP FOR 8 WEEKS WITH THE SAME LAME GROUP UP FRONT!!! -
dakar- i hear ya but remember we traded away the 3rd.
-
THIS IS GREAT!!!
-
its said the jets are the front runners to landing c.pace…if so…draft gholston and a RT in the 1st 2 rounds of the draft…just my thoughts…
-
Thanks for the burst bubble
-
liam as far as i thought we had 2-3 3rds…didnt we…
-
How about WR as a need? We only have two even remotely capable WRs assuming Coles stays, which isn’t a given
-
I love the moves thus far, locking up Jenkins excites me the most. Faneca’s addition was awesome as well. I hope we address the WR need through free agency as well. My hope is to obtain Bryant Johnson or D.J Hackett? Bryant Johnson makes more sense. Of course Mcfadden is the dream pick at #6. However trading down and getting a the third round pick which we lost in the Jenkins deal would be a smart way to go. Then you could draft the shutdown and physical corner in Flowers from Virginia Tech. I understand his 40 time at the combine was forgettable, but if you see the game tape you know he is the real deal.

While the eagles are rummored to be a leading contender, Larry Fitzgerald is on his way out in AZ…his contract is not feasible with their cap and they are looking to deal him. Just a thought!
I think it was a little over a year ago when I told basset that my buddy talked with a Jet at a wedding, and the guy told him that there was no way Vilma would be around next year…vindication? Yeah, he got injured, but I’m still ‘more right” than people who thought I was lying! Can’t WAIT to see Jenkins tear it up in the middle -
Adam Schefter is reporting that er are going to make a move early next week, to fix the rt side of the line, did not mention any names but he certainly teased it up good.
-
i wouldnt have liked to samuel cause he is better in zone and i heard that mangini wants to play more man and im not sure he is that good in man hes a lil too small for man(weight) i like how we went out in freeagency and actually went after wut we needed i relle dont want c.pace seems like he was just average i mean he might be a guy on the rise but if we learned anythin from thomas sometimes people just have good years i say thou if we get ghoulston like i sed before it might open thomas up a lil more and create some things for him
-
I think we should draft McFadden. We can get a pass rusher like Cliff Avril or maybe even Quentin Groves in the second round. I think we can address the Tackle position by taking a chance on Shane Olivea. He had some back problems and was cut by the Chargers, but he’s only 26 and I think he would be loads better than having Anthony Clement. Personally, I think we should trade up to get Chris Long as the First pick. He has a non stop motor and he would be perfect in our 3-4 scheme. If we trade up to get him and still end up getting McFadden with the 6th pick, I think you give the Jets an A+ in the draft. If we do get McFadden, that makes Leon Washington expendable and we could get some value for him too.

OUTSTANDING
Fanaca will fit nicely between D-Brick and Mangold.
Pick up one of the many nice OT prospects in the 2nd round and the O-line should be OK.
Drop in McFadden with the 6th pick and run run run.
Jenkins is also a nice clog in the middle that hasn’t been seen in the Jets 3-4 since Ferguson left.
-
faneca wasn’t my 1st choice becuz of age…but i still think he’s worth the money…just my thoughts…
-
Faneca is good for four years and the guarentee confirms it. It is 23M, not 2.3, but he’ll earn all of it.
Guys, you got to let DMac go. If the Cboys want to pony up the 21 and the 28, good, we get two more guys, but, otherwise we have other positions to fill before we double up in the backfield. Only one CB, only two WR, and no pass rush. You’ve got to think of adding substance before flash. The Jets are a long way from finished building a playoff quality team. -
Why let McFadden go?
Unless the Raiders pick him, he will easily fall to us.
His stats are up there with Hershel and Emmitt. This is the SEC remember.
He will be a beast in the NFL, especially with a revamped Jets line.
-
I don’t want McFadden at all. TJ had a great year last year, especially considering the porous line, and he’s one of the few who never let up during a crappy season. He doesn’t have that much mileage despite being 31, so he probably still has a good two years in him. I know that it’s sexy and exciting to draft a skill player with a high pick, but there are much more pressing needs to be addressed at #6. I say take Gholston, one of the Longs, maybe McKelvin or trade the pick.
-
since we have jones the talk of d.mac shouldn’t even come to mind…it would be a waisted pick on a position we dont need to worry about…jones will be fine…
now that we have a LT and a NT we need 2 OLBs( maybe c.pace signs and draft gholston),RT( whoever drops to us),WR (for the fact we dont know whats gonna happen with coles) and another DE…( kendall langford or marcus dixon…we always need D-LINEMEN)…just my thoughts…
-
sorry LG
-
Wow, I really hope we get him. Much like the Santana signing for the Mets adding a big name to a an OLine that was so terrible should do a lot for the mentality of the line. I think that when we look at this trade we need to look at all that faneca brings, a pro bowler, a mega contract, he is going to be a great leader and will carry with him a swagger that these young kids lack. This could be huge for the development of our boys. Also, I am glad that Tony Wise is gone, he was terrible. I am expecting big things from Callahan and really want to see progression from Mangold and Brick.
-
I really hope the Fanaca deal happens because he will immediately provide a strong anchor and the best means by which to evaluate the offense next year. Fanaca will provide running room on the left side, and will greatly help D’Brick’s and Mangold’s development. Most importantly, he will provide the entire offense with that extra second it needs to execute plays. With Fanaca in place, the Jets can accurately evaluate KC, Schott, etc.
Even for those who are concerned about the age or money, the bottom line is that it is the most important position the Jets need to fill and he is the best FA available for that position.
-
Vilma was acquired from the Saints for a 2008 draft pick, and a conditional 2009 pick as well. The initial report was wrong, and this deal makes much more sense….thank god.
-
On FootballOutsiders, there is a lot of negative talk about Faneca. Someone wrote that he is always complaining to the media about something (like Kendall?), even though that could be a bitter Steeler fan saying that. Another poster attributed his complaints to the way the Steelers dismissed Russ Grimms as a coaching candidate. Most of the posters believe that it was too much money for a declining guard. I don’t have the numbers, but it seems pretty feasible for a guard to still play effectively when they are 35, which is when Faneca’s four-year deal would end.
Steelers did have a rough year blocking last year, and I wonder what Faneca’s role was in that situation. I hope he is still on his game and isn’t looking to simply cash in.

I believe this will help Clemens a lot and now we can officially evaluate how Clemens does this year. He has a left side of the line and the Jets will bolster the right side during the draft
