Are the Jets Leading in Chip Count on Alan Faneca?

by Bassett on February 29th, 2008 at 2:07 pm

Alan Faneca’s agent, Rick Smith told the Daily News that the Jets are passionately interested in the former Pro-Bowl Guard.

“They’re absolutely all in, to use a poker term.”

I have to admit, I am getting a little nervous now. The hope is that just because they are “all in” doesn’t truly mean there is nothing left in reserve for the Jets to offer should it come to that.

Faneca is clearly weighing his options, like any smart free agent would do. Let’s just hope that the Jets don’t have to sweeten the pot substantially.

UPDATE: To this, T-Rock has added that Smith is compiling the offer sheets and that

Either Saturday afternoon, but no later than Sunday, Smith said, Faneca will make his decision. On Sunday he is expected to board a plane for one of the destinations and sign the contract tat will likely make him the best-paid offensive lineman in the sport.

“One plane, one visit,” Smith said of the weekend’s no-nonsense decision-making.

Wow, so maybe the Jets are all-in. But I have to say that their rush to get an offer out and public could potentially be their undoing. I have to say that I am concerned that the Jets offer is public so the Rams (around $7 million under) and Niners (around $32 million under) know what it would take to beat them.

So now … we wait …

UPDATE 2: This story on NFL.com contradicts that statement from Smith.

It’s very annoying that Faneca wants to take his time and weigh up all his options because in the meantime, all potential fallback options (not that there are many) will disappear. If the price gets too high, I believe they could still find a starter on day one of the draft and in fact, given that Brandon Moore is hardly allpro material, they may ultimately do this even if they do get Faneca.

nfl.com is reporting faneca will be visiting the jets this weekend!

Since we lost Vilma the FO has gone bananas trying to fill the void so we wont feel the loss of Vilma.

I WONDER HOW MUCH OF THIS IS BECAUSE OF WOODY JOHNSON!!!

Hey Jeff, I would say conservatively, none percent.

Faneca is “all in” too. Count on it. The Front Office is not in a panic. They do not do business from there. Each deal is a deal unto itself, and fans DO NOT count. Try to relax, it’s going to be months before this can be weighed and compared to other teams. I think the Jets will be fine, although I thought that last year too!

My feeling is that this buys the Jets some time, maybe four years, to get a team through the draft that can play for years to come. Most teams are beginning to think that free agency is too expensive to be a long term strategy and I agree. But with so many holes in so many critical positions, I think they HAD to participate. As I’ve said, I think that buys them four years, so we’ll see.

You can kill Woody all you want, but you can’t call him cheap, our 2 biggest holes were LG and NT, and we’re about to commit $40 million gaurunteed to shore up those holes.

Maybe we should go “all in”. Not just on Faneca, but on anyone and everyone. Overspend and don’t worry about the future cap implications, because once you’re a contender, guys will come and play for you for less than market value because of the chance at a ring. Works for the Pats.

(naturally, I don’t believe this one bit, I’m just trying to win a “kewpie doll”)

  9. avatar billvv says:

Two things: Thing one, the site is CarolinaGrowl.com for fan comments about the Jenkins deal. Thing two, when Faneca looks at going to the Rams, the 49ers, and the Jets, I think the Jets look like the best fit and the most improved team when he joins. And that does the deal.

i just read that article on espn bout mcfadden falling to the jets…..i swear if the jets pull the trigger on mcfadden and pass on gholston and then i have to see belichek draft gholston…..i really dont kno if i could watch them this season…..

    DONT DRAFT MCFADDEN…..

i wish these dumb analysts would remember the fact that we have thomas jones who um went to a super bowl a couple years ago and we also have leon washington….and also TJ got over a 1000 yards even with are pathetic offensive line….

    Ed L –

I’m pretty sure that draft is just contrarian to stir up people like yourself. If they had the same mock that everyone else had, no one would talk about.

I’d be shocked if Parcells took Ryan at #1 or the Rams went for C. Long a year after taking Carriker in the 1st round and when they need O-line help. He talks about McFadden dropping because of “character concerns” — yet he has the Jets taking him? Please, he’s just trying to stir it up (or has no idea about football, which could be the case).

  12. avatar Sean says:

Ed L You took the words right out of my mouth. I just sent a private email to J Mattera and said

“McShay has us taking D Mac and Gholston going to NE. How mad are you going to be if you see Gholston blow past D Brick, knock Dmac 5 yards back and breaking Clemens’ neck?”

ATTENTION FRONT OFFICE: we do not need to take the “value pick” because he has “home run speed”. The following teams had awesome O Lines, good defenses, did not have “home run” speed and either went to the playoffs or won the Super Bowl:

    1. Brandon Jacobs (not to mention the fact that because this O LINE was awesome, every back that set foot on the field ran well. Ala D. Ward and Bradshaw).

    2. NE Running Backs who started Super Bowls: Corey Dillon (past his prime and without “home run” speed and Antowain (are you F@#$ing joking) Smith.

    3. Thomas Jones and the Bears D beat up on the explosive Saints

These are a few that stick out but I think I have substantiated my point that a solid O LINE and D will make us a far better team than if we have McFadden.

Take Gholston and we are already significantly better on both sides of the ball.

  13. avatar jeff i says:

there is NO way we take mcfadden. we just paid thomas jones a ton of $ and we have leon washington to help share the load. the jets front office is purely posturing to make a trade if there really is noise about us wanting him.

  14. avatar Sean says:

Jeff i, I hope you are right. I like the 2 headed monster of TJ and LW and I think the addition of Gholston and Jenkins will make this D respectable again.

Looks like 3rd and a 5th is the going rate for mammoth and potentially dominant DTs:

The Cincinnati Bengals, who acquired defensive tackle Shaun Rogers in a trade with the Detroit Lions on Friday afternoon, reached a three-year agreement with linebacker Dhani Jones.

The Bengals traded third-round and fifth-round draft picks to Detroit to acquire Rogers.

Jones and linebacker Landon Johnson were two of the team’s priorities to re-sign once free agency started Friday morning. Jones, who signed with the Bengals during the 2007 season after a number of linebacker injuries, was the first to reach an agreement. Talks continue with Johnson, who is an unrestricted free agent.

The Bengals lost safety Madieu Williams to the Vikings early Friday morning when he agreed to a six-year, $33 million contract.

If we add Gholston we will get to the divisional round of the playoffs (as long as the quarter back situation doesn’t implode [again]).

  17. avatar Chris says:

Hmm…It is true, we need a legit pass rusher. I like Gholston a lot. But think about it, could you imagine how beast a combo of Jones and McFadden could be with an improved offensive line. I mean we can address the right tackle position by getting Shane Olivea. Also we may not even get Gholston or MCFadden. I think we should make a bold move and move up to get Chris Long. He fits perfectly with our 3-4 defense and we could still have the chance to draft McFadden later on if he’s not taken. I personally believe that if we could get Chris Long we would be tons better. He busts his butt on every play and causes havoc in the backfield. I think we should jump and get Chris Long and hopefully we might even be able to get McFadden, as I think the draft order will go like this. C. Long, G.Dorsey, M.Ryan, S.Ellis, J.Long, D.McFadden.

  18. avatar Sean says:

Chris Long has already come out and said that he is better suited for a 4-3 defense.
