Asante Samuel Set to Talk to Media at 4:30PM

According to PFT, the Eagles announced Asante Samuel will in fact visit the team on Friday, as speculated reports had stated. After that, he will be made available to media at 4:30 p.m. EST.

If that doesn’t sound like it’s pretty much wrapped up, I’m not sure what does.

I’m not really concerned that the Jets aren’t going to sign Asante. Would I have liked them to? Of course, but for the price, I don’t know that it was worth it. The hope is that the $10 million he would have commanded can be put to better use at RT, finding another CB who can compete at the #2 or signing an OLB. Better yet, maybe they can use it to resign guys like Chris Baker and Kerry Rhodes.

It seems that this time around, there was more “grey area” in negotiating with free agents leading up to the actual free agent start time, and whatever the Jets offered wasn’t enough for Samuel to merit a visit. Samuel had made it known he wanted two things: money and to play for a contender.

It’s not missing out on Asante that has me choked up, it’s that it’s probably the last time I get to use that picture …

  1. bassett – you’re a smart guy and i can’t figure out for the life of me why you would endorse signing samuel when we already putting out big time $ for revis and will be for rhodes. we have bigger needs stopping the run and rushing the passer. our defensive backfield is solid and even better than it appears on face given we basically didn’t have a pass rush for most of the year. paying two lockdown corners is a waste of $ and as an aside, revis will be a better all around player (tackling etc…) than samuel.

  2. *tries to put mental image of Bassett “using” the picture out of mind*

  3. That sucks, I really hoped to get Samual and Faneca this offseason. Maybe the Jets swoop in and overwhelm him.

  4. Hi Jeff I-

Umm … what? Did you even read what I wrote, or just skip the whole post and write a comment as usual???

  5. PS – I’m in favor of upgrading each and every position, whenever you can, but like most people, but I understand that you can’t have an All-Pro team at every position.

  6. sorry bassett…ur right on…read so many posts today i think i confused someone else’s commentary with yours.

  7. I think Assante was exposed in the Super Bowl and the JETS would be better served using the draft or signing another FA to shore up CB. Let us not forget Justin Miller.
As to Jenkins, I really like this trade. This will upgrade entire Defense. Although this now creates an issue with DRob. Can he play DE? If so that makes Ellis available. I would pursue LB Pace so we have two good OLBs.
As to Offense we need to sign a guard. Hopefully Faneca says yes. Then that leaves ROT to a FA or draft.
As a result of Jenkins trade, I am beginning to think that the JETS will trade down in the draft with Dallas.

  8. jeff i – no worries, my eyes are getting blurry too! :D

I was sitting in The Ed(itor)’s seats for the Pats – Jets game last year, and I saw the Jets run the same play twice in a row on Asante Samuel. The first was a dropped/broken up? pass to Coles, the second was the Coles TD.
