Jets Give Up Two Draft Picks for Kris Jenkins
The deal has been finalized that will send the Pro-Bowl Defensive Tackle to the Jets for a third and fifth round pick. It’s ironic that the one thing that Vilma never had after his rookie season, decent tackles to protect him, the Jets were now willing to get for the front office’s new guy … David Harris. Even though Sione Pouha showed some flashes at the end of last season, this makes him assume his natural role as a backup rather than a starter or significant contributor.
Positives — The Jets now have a guy that will command doubles up front, a space hog. Jenkins presence will free up space for the inside linebacker as well as fellow lineman. Jenkins also fits the Mangini type player. He’s a hard worker who even though he wanted to be moved last year, was quiet for the 2007 season while waiting for his chance to get out of Carolina. Should the Jets be unable to move Roberston, they could rotate him in at end, much like they did in the Steelers game, with Ellis standing. Finishing this deal puts the Jets in a position of depth (but not negotiating strength) in dealing with other teams for Robertson.
Negatives — Injury concerns, he played five games in a two year stretch, but returned to form in 2007, but not to his former level. Age concerns, he’s almost 30 and the Jets should make plans for replacing him with a younger nose after the 2009 season. At first blush, it’s undetermined how familiar he is with a 3-4 scheme. After initial talks for a 3rd round pick, does adding a fifth tip the scale?

I like the addition of Jenkins however I do think a 3rd and 5th is too much, considering the Jets third is a high third, I think they pick like 4th in the 3rd. Considering Rogers is being offered up for a 4th rounder it seems like these two picks are too much. If the Jets could have gotten a 3rd from the Saints for Vilma it wouldn’t be so painful, the conditions of the pick are interesting. I wonder why the Panthers had no interest Vilma considering they lost Dan Morgan.
Perfect. The Jets may finally be able to stop the run for the first time since Parcells.
Do you HAVE to trade Vilma or Robertson now? Robertson is short for a DE, but I dont know what the coaches think of that possibility. Vilma may benefit now, but again, I dont know what the coaches think regarding him playing the weakside now.
Hallelujah. Finally a big man to play the nose. Now once we sign Faneca, our lines look much beter. Oh and I say see ya Vilma. Harris si the LB of the future for us and they showed their dedication to him by scooping up a beast of a man to protect him in Jenkis. Now what to do with Dewayne?
I think the Jenkins and hopefully soon to be Faneca signings at least buys us time to draft and develop their eventual replacements..I think both of them will give us at least 2 good years..and I don’t know what’s going on with Bender (where on the line is he playing?) but having Faneca there to teach him (and Brick and Mangold) is well worth the $8mil/yr. Giving up two mid-round picks for a guy that never played a 3-4 worries me, especially with not getting anything substantial from the Vilma trade..Do you think if Gholsten isn’t there at 6 that the Jets trade down to re-coup their lost picks? I think the only way they don’t trade that pick is if they can get Gholsten. If these two signings go through, they won’t be looking for 2008 starters in the draft and will hopefully drop out of the 6th spot.
Vilma can’t play outside … they would have tried it if they thought it would work. Vilma is a dog that just won’t hunt in the 3-4 … it’s even more glaring if they had to move him outside.
I’ve got to agree .. that high third was really nice, but straight up for Jenkins I was emotionally willing to make that switch. Now with the extra pick, I feel a little less exuberant about the trade, but it meets a specific need that had basically no one relevant to the Jets on the open market. I’d imagine it also takes them out of any discussions for Sedrick Ellis … so for now, I’d say that makes them more a target to move out of that #6 should he fall to that slot.
are jet fans EVER happy? jeez louise….
okay jets fans i LOVE chad but lets get serious this year! Derek Anderson is only 24 years old and a probowl selection not to mention a huge deep threat! lets deal chad to KC to Herm free up that loot sign Derek and look at Gholston for our 6th pick…still leaves us dry on the OL but its a better move then spending huge money on a coner when we just drafted Revis who has proven himself and if we dont keep rhodes ill throw up…just think about it please I want a super bowl ring and these moves spell playoffs!
OK, I understand some of the disappointment with giving up an extra pick in this deal, everyone seemed resigned to just a 3rd rounder, but c’mon, if we found a starting NT that is going to be a run stuffer in the middle of this line for the next 3 years isn’t it worth it (even with throwing in a 5th round pick). If you are ok with giving up a 3rd for him I wouldn’t sweat too much over the 5th round pick, which are usually less than a 50/50 proposition to pan out.
I wouldn’t worry about recouping the draft picks either, we still have roberston to deal (unless they rework his deal and stick him at DE, which Im not thrilled about), and possibly Pennington and Coles to fetch picks as well.
Again, the best case scenario is McFadden falling there, and the Cowboys moving up I think. Would you rather have Gholston or the 22 and 28 (i think)? Some combination of Rivers/Groves, and maybe one of the big time guards would work for me. Even Henne or Flacco if they dont like Kellen.
haha Jeff you know we arent. I am happy to fill a need but I obviously dont want to overpay. Lets not forget the Jets only had 4 picks last year and now are only scehduled to have 5 picks this year, its hard to build through the draft when you dont have any picks. As far as the 6th spot, hopefully McFadden or Gholston is there and the Jets can trade out, seeing as Dallas has two first rounders I am hoping they really do want McFadden. If the Faneca signing happens then the remaining glaring needs are OLB, and RT – so I would hope to trade out of 6, gain some picks, and hopefully grab Groves from Auburn to play OLB.
If the Faneca deal goes through, then the team has filled 2 of its big 4 needs: LG and NT with very high caliber players (albeit some age and injury risk) and leaves OLB and RT to be filled; in that order of need. That is outstanding. We might not all agree on the price given up for Jenkins, sounds like we do agree its a good price for Faneca, but this fills major needs and with quality. I would like to see us sign a solid but reasonably priced RT in free agency; such as Woody, so we can focus as much energy as possible in the draft on OLBs/pass rushers. Lets just hope the Faneca signing happens.
I am happy with this deal. The price was high, but our need for a NT was higher. This guy is good in the locker room, and he is used to eating up two blockers. Basic economics, if you need something the price goes up. In an ideal world, itd be just a 3rd rounder, after a 4-12 season where everyone knows u can’t stop the run the price goes up. Ppl have been critizing tangini for making mistakes, with this signing and the hopeful Fanaca signing we’ve addressed our two biggest needs and given oursleves flexability in the draft. Also keep in mind these guys will be able to tutor our younger lineman mosley, pouha, for jenkins and bender, mangold and brick with fanaca. Keep in mind that there is more behind the scenes with this regieme. These r good moves in the short term and long term.
One more thought about Jenkins- his decrease in production the last couple of years (although he was a pro bowler in ‘06) is considered a result of three things: injuries (nothing we can do there but keep our fingers crossed); weight issues and lost a little burst. A move to the 3-4 might be perfect for this guy. Let him pile on the weight, clog the middle and frankly the lost burst isn’t that much of a concern since he’s no longer being asked to be a penetrator. I actually think he might benefit from a move to the 3-4 and that the last couple of years he was not a great fit for the 4-3.
Thank God we have a monster in the middle now! Getting Jenkins for a 3rd and 5th (which has a chance to make the team, but little chance of adding real value…maybe a special teamer or situational player) is definitely worth it when you have such a glaring need. He is also less of a risk than Rogers was, so this is huge upgrade.
Good job Tannenbaum! I am anxious to see what your next move is.
Yes, on the surface a 3 and a 5 seem like a bit much for an arguably injury-prone monster like Jenkins, who only plays the most physically demanding position in football.
But look deeper – the wheeling and dealing isn’t done yet, whether you are talking about Jets free agent pick-ups and swapping draft picks. I’ll also stand by my assertion that we should keep D-Rob and play him outside in the 3-4, and inside when we shift to the hybrid 4-3. We can now let him play at his more comfortable weight of 300 or so, and let him work on OGs and show off his speed and strength combo. Problem is, we need to restructure that contract.
If Faneca is a done deal, we use mid-level picks to restock the future O-line. Let’s hope Bender is making progress, and keep Montgomery as a multi-purpose backup during the next couple of years.
Now, get me a speedy WR that can stretch defenses so Thomas Jones can gain 1800 yards next season, allowing for Kellen to throw for 3900 yards and 25 TDs.
Sheesh, it’s like I’m drunk at 9:30 a.m. already.
Good thoughts by the “stay the course” folks on giving up the 3&5 … thanks for the perspective.
NT is a HUGE (pun intended) need that I have been complaining about for years … they’ve filled that need, with one of the better players out there and we’ll see what happens from here … long way til training camp.
Hate giving up the picks but this is a beast with all the physical tools who yells at his teammates for not playing hard enough. Exactly what you want in a nose tackle. If he stays healthy it’s worth it.
With this and the Faneca deal (and the money spent on them) I’d also love to trade down out of the 6 spot but that requires a partner. Perhaps it could be Dallas hungry for McFadden but Jones is a cool customer not likely to make it easy for anyone.

I think it’s interesting that the FO has seemingly foregone their “We’ll build through the draft” philosophy and searching under rocks for JAG-type players to land high-profile players in both Jenkins and possibly Faneca. Very proactive — hopefully, they’ve learned from last year’s mistake of sitting back and thinking they were set, which is encouraging in itself.
I’m happy with the KJ trade. But it is also pretty good from Carolina’s perspective. They get high third and fifth picks for a guy they didn’t want.
BTW, did anyone see Jeopardy last night? The final question was, “what NFL team plays its home games out-of-state, and in a stadium named for another team?” All three contestants got it right. Guess we’re more famous than we realize. Alex , of course, noted that when the Jets play there, it’s called the Meadowlands.
You should visit the Carolina Growl web site to read the comments of THEIR fans! Nobody’s entirely happy, which probably means it was a fair trade.
mbi – if you can draft two studs like revis and harris every year, you don’t need lots of picks. sorry but the linear analysis on drafting is getting old. the jets thought there wasn’t a lot of talent in last year’s draft and thus, they made the move to get two marquee guys vs. a bunch of mediocre players. you know what, it was the right move by a longshot. we have two players to build a defense around.
r in CT – it may be a nuance but there’s no competitive advantage in spending $ in free agency (but if you are a good drafter, you may have more $ to spend bc you have less busts/wasted cap $). you still build through better scouting and drafting in the draft. that doesn’t mean you can’t fill immediate needs through free agency.
i have a question does this deal have any thing to do with what the jets will get from the saints for vilma…. in one of the articles in the sun sentinal said the jenkins deal could involve compensations the jets get from the saints….
Does anyone have any more info on this?
This is a great trade, taking away the risk of injury, if we get Faneca and Gholston, it has been a good off-season. Trading with the Cowboys for their two #1’s would be good too. Grab Groves and a WR. Finally, we might have a defense again that might be able to rush the passer and stop the run.
