I agree on Ellis. That makes more sense than having him be easily the lightest guy on the line, where teams could be compelled to run at him.

The defense as a whole seems to have so many different options and looks now. Maybe this 3-4 thing could be interesting after all!

The other thing to add is that the Jets have been worse defending runs on the edges than runs up the middle.

Mulling it over, my feeling is that the team will shop Robertson to try and recoup the draft picks they lost, but they will be perfectly willing to hold onto him and putting him on the frontline along with Jenkins and Coleman, either in fixed positions or in rotation.

My fearless prediction is that Ellis is asked to drop to around 265 and will be moved outside to linebacker, much as Greg Ellis was in Dallas. He wouldn't be an every down player, but he would be part of the run stopping package, just as he was late in the season.

Matt and Ian, that's fine, but I am not just throwing some nonsense out there. 3-4 DE is as close to 4-3 DT as 3-4 NT. Baltimore for example use the 340 pound Haloti Ngata at DE (he was a 4-3 DT in college) and 310 pound Kelly Gregg at nose. Here's my post from the other day, which I don't expect you to agree with but at least it shows I am no lunatic - I hope...

"I’m not saying [him being a DE] IS smarter, just that it COULD BE.

Firstly, Jenkins has no experience in the 3-4. Principally, he has never been asked to two gap before. There is more to this than just being over 325 pounds. Carolina fans don’t seem to think he is a good fit at nose tackle in a 3-4 and they would probably know better than you or I. (Certainly me, anyway!)

Secondly, there are plenty of other guys a similar size to Jenkins who play as 3-4 DEs.

Thirdly, If Robertson stays with the team, Jenkins has the height to play DE, whereas Robertson doesn’t.

Similarly, Robertson is stocky, whereas height can be a disadvantage for a 3-4 nose for leverage reasons.

Finally, Jenkins can still command double teams from the end position and Robertson has shown that he can be dominant one-on-one.

I believe Robertson is on his way out, but I am not the only person in the world who questions whether Jenkins wouldn’t be better at DE. Maybe the Jets don’t even know themselves. However, the point somebody else made about Jenkins maybe becoming more suited to a 3-4 nose role as he gets older and less active is a very good one.

It’s not easy to rank these front lines:

Robertson-Jenkins-Coleman
Coleman-Jenkins-Shaun Ellis
Jenkins-Robertson-Coleman
Jenkins-Sedrick Ellis-Coleman
Jenkins-Pouha-Coleman

I have no idea which of these (or something else) is the plan."

OK the Bengals just got Shuan Rogers for a 3rd and 5th. I'm feeling a little robbed here. Rogers or Jenkins whose better?

i would ove to see d-rob line up alongside a guy like jenkins. I think that's the best way for the Jets to go. D-rob is an interior lineman, I don't see lining him up on the end ever working out. I'd like to see a front seven consisting of ellis, d-rob, jenkins, coleman (maybe chris long if we're lucky), thomas, harris and gholston (hopefully if long doesnt work out). that's just my hopes and reams. the biggest concern i ahve right now thought....EXTEND KERRY RHODES.

sorry bent, but i have to agree with matt. the idea of a 350 pound DE who has never played the position before is kind of nuts. i don't imagine it would be very hard to run around the end that where he would be lined up.

i like d-rob as back-up NT and back-up/rotation with ellis and coleman at the end positions.

also, i think they aren't admitting it, but there will be a lot of four man fronts with Jenkins and D-Rob inside and ellis playing his natural 4-3 end position.

We're Jets fans...pessimism is what we do best. Look, I like the deal for Jenkins, but now we have an $11million backup at NT in Robertson. He's not an end, and even thikning of lining up Jenkins at end is ludicrous. I have a feeling an outright release of Robertson is going to happen, which is a shame because I think we could ahve gotten a 3rd-4th rounder for him. Maybe i'm overvalueing him a lot, but that's what I think. And my heart was broken today when we shipped off Vilma, however I think it's undoubtedly for the best for both parties. Farewell and good luck Jon.

We are apparently set at NT for awhile, Jets announced an extension for Pouha in the same press release with the Jenkins contract/trade.

I don't think they killed his trade value anyway. If anything, they enhanced it, by taking another available DT option off the market.
