Newsflash – Vilma Returns Better than Thought?
“The Saints reportedly gave up a 2008 draft pick and a conditional 2009 draft pick for Jonathan Vilma.
This makes a lot more sense, although we’re not sure why A) So many stories were proven incorrect Friday and B) there is so much secrecy on the terms of a trade. The deal was originally reported as a conditional 2009 fourth, but the Jets will get a fairer deal. We’ll let you know the exact terms when we know.”

This may yet prove inaccurate, but I thought I’d pass it along. Would seem to make more sense than the disappointing 2009 conditional pick they had previously been rumoured (sic) to have received, which I’d assumed was due to his injury. Watch this space.
Update: Tom Rock reports great news! It’s a fourth this year, plus (if he meets playing time targets and signs an extension) either a 2nd or a 3rd next year, but with a 2009 4th rounder going back from the Jets to the Saints.

“we’re not sure why … so many stories were proven incorrect Friday”
Deliberate underselling by the Jets to manage expectations?
So it’s a fourth in 2008 which is at least equivalent to the absolute maximum comp. pick we’d have got (although it was unlikely) being a 2009 third rounder (discounted by a round because it’s next year). And then a cap saving and one less player on the roster not in the plans, plus JV gets a nice opportunity for himself. Now the deal makes sense.
Plus we have the extra comfort of basically a decent pick next year too if JV’s knee is OK. Sensible for both teams.
i agree…its even better than when i 1st read about this trade…a 4th this year and im sure vilma will do very good for NO…so im sure we’ll get the 2nd in next years draft and we’ll hand over the 4th back to them…makes alot of sense…just my thoughts…
Any chance we use that pick with D-Rob and send him to Detroit for Roy Williams. Other sources have said the Jets are looking for at least a 2nd round pick for D-Rob. It is strange that we would get more for D-Rob than Vilma. Just a thought.
Also heard rumors of the Jets being interetsed in Moss. Can’t see this happening, I don’t think he would be in a good mood for an average team. Probably just trying to drive up the price for the Pats.
ms…if both teams view these guys are worth a second round pick why would you give detroit an extra pick if such a trade was made…i see it as a fair trade straight up…player for player…neither 1 outshines the other…just my thoughts…
Would Moss leaving NE be better news for the Jets than any of these other moves?
Wow, the Pats just released Brady. Oh, *Kyle* Brady…
Williams deal is up in a year and he wants 30m in guarantees. Ouch. From a talent perspective it would be a nice move, but money doesn’t grow on trees.
2nd rounder for D-Rob sounds fair, but I’d be pleasantly surprised if they could get that.
This makes it even easier to swallow the extra pick (throwing in the 5 )in the Jenkins deal…now we still have the same number of picks this year and actually improve our position by having two low 4th rounders (NO’s 10th in the 4th)….I have to say it again, Tannenbaum is doing a great job!
i dont think r.williams has done enough for that kind of contract… $30 million in garanties…hell no…not worth it…i’d rather pry chad johnson away from cinci for that kind of money…just my thoughts…
david…i agree…MR.T. is doing a great job this year…lets just hope it all works out for the best…just my thoughts
d-rob has 1st round talent – his contract sucks so that’s why it’s a second round asking price. one thing’s for sure. jet fans will never regret trading vilma. but i can guarantee when robertson gets into a 4-3 defense and dominates/is a pro bowler, the belly-aching from jet fans will be heard far and wide!
we all know how well the jets do recently with those fourth rounders …
2006 – b smith
2006 – leon
2005 – rhodes
2004 – cotchery
2004 – adrian jones
(4 out of 5 aint bad)
I think the Jets are on a roll! C Pace is coming to town this weekend just to see what all the excitement is all about. With the talk of Randall Gay next, that’s got to sound good compared to Miami to him! It’s beginning to look alot like Christmas! What with the snow and the presents. Good times!
Its never to early to do this, I am excited what can I say
QB Clemens
RB Jones
RB Washington
WR Coles
WR Cotchery
TE Baker
LT D Brick
LG Faneca
C Mangold
RG ——
RT ——
DE Ellis
DT Jenkins
DE Robertson?
OLB Thomas
MLB Harris
MLB ——
OLB ——
CB Revis
S Rhodes
S Elam/Smith
CB ——
K Nugent
P Graham
KR Miller
PR Washington
Looks like are big needs now are RG, RT, OLB, MLB and CB
and does anyone have an idea of how much we are under the cap now? I wouldnt think anyone is yet but if you are I will be impressed
I also wouldnt mind going back to a FB and getting Neal or Richardson or a guy via the draft, Hester or Schmidt.
b.moore will be at RG…we most likely pickup a RT from the draft…either 2nd or 3rd round…barton will play next to harris… hopfully we sign c.pace and draft gholston and use thomas/bowens as backups…we already signed tutt…so i dont think we will persue neal or richardson…as for d-rob…Mr.T. said this…
“I know there’s a lot of rumors out there about Dewayne,” Tannenbaum said. “Dewayne’s 26, he’s done a lot of things for us as well. I don’t want to comment on any rumors. But depth on the defensive line is important, there’s nothing imminent, and Dewayne should be here.”
i think if something is gonna happen with d-rob it will happen within this week…and we still have to make rhodes a happy jet soon to…and randle gay is coming for a visit…but i would rather go with justin miller as are CB opposite revis…anyway, just my thoughts…
More often than not, these trades are contingent on the player signing a new/extended contract. Take Jenkins, for example.
Vilma didn’t sign an extension, and the conditional 2009 2nd or 3rd rounder from the Saints comes only if he does so, according to Rock.
That could still happen, but if Vilma was committed to NO (and the Saints to him), wouldn’t he get an extended deal now? Smells like one-and-done to me.
Vilma to the Saints for a fourth rounder in 2008 until further notice.
i dont think so…if vilma starts to put together a real good year like he did for us his 1st 2 years in the 4-3…i would expect NO to sign him before the year is done…i think he will…just my thoughts…
I’ll never understand my fellow Jet fans. Some how everyone thinks Tannenbaum is some genius…. he just traded Vilma when his value was at his absolute lowest (off an injury). Here’s a player just a couple years removed from being a 1st round pick and defensive rookie of the year. He was still one of the few talents on one of the worst defenses in football, and we basically gave him away.
Then there’s Jenkins. He somehow solves our problem at NT? Isn’t this guy a 4-3 DT? Didn’t CArolina’s defense suck last year? What am I missing here?
We still have NOT ONE pass rusher on this team. Not one. And we just gave up Vilma and two picks. Faneca is good for maybe 2 years so clearly we want to win now. Tell me how that’s happening with the defense we currently have.
I don’t think anyone is calling him a genius, but Tannenbaum is playing the hand he is dealt with as best as you can…that is why you have to give him credit. He is taking action, filling holes, and getting some returns with what is available. Nobody is saying he has a Straight Flush, but you know don’t need a straight flush to have a winning hand.
Bassett did actually say “[provided Faneca stays healthy] Tannenbaum looks like a genius” on the front page though!
Jenkins is arguably better equipped to play the nose than Robertson (also a 4-3 DT), so that’s an upgrade, right? – at a lower cost. Alternatively, there are lots of guys like Jenkins that play the 3-4 DE position well.
I agree we need pass rushers, but I’m sure the front office is well aware of that and is reportedly pursuing Calvin Pace, as well as having the option of using one of their first two picks on such a player.
To say we’ve no pass rushers, when Ellis, Thomas and Bowens have all had pass rushing success in the past is a bit harsh, although I would agree that none of them covered themselves in glory last year.
If Vilma returns to pre-injury form, we should end up with a 2nd rounder, and his contract was due to be up anyway. If not, then that’s just bad luck that the injury happened when it did and at least we got something for him. Under the circumstances, that’s about the best you can expect. Maybe we should have traded him last year, but hindsight is always 20-20.
I don’t think the job is even half done yet, so it’s way too early to judge one way or the other, but there’s plenty of reasons to be optimistic that the Jets are on the right track.
I did indeed! I meant it more in the context of the whole day, and that he had secured Faneca. So … genius tag removed until such time he comes through.
Still, the sheer amount of wheeling and dealing is impressive, we’ll get to the net net on the defense later this weekend … it’s been something we’ve been kicking around in our heads for two days now.
Bent,
Ellis, Thomas and Bowens is not making me forget the Sack Exchange. That is not the kind of pass rush from the outside that’s going to scare anyone. Subpar in my opinion. Assuming the Faneca deal goes through (don’t forget about that Buffalo CB that stiffed us last minute a few years ago – forgetting his name) the remaining priorities in order as far as I’m concerned are:
Pass Rushing OLB
Right Off Tackle
Pass Rushing DE
3rd Wide Receiver
I read one post about Javon Walker being a potential target. That doesn’t sound depending on the money. They can’t get all of the above in the draft and rookie WRs don’t tend to pay dividends in Year 1.
Draft a pass rusher and an offensive tackle, sign a WR and a sign a cheaper vet offensive Tackle to backup/compete. They might have to make due with D Rob at DE if they can’t unload him. If they do use the pick on another pass rusher.
We need to expose that overrated Offensive Line in Foxboro like the Giants did.
Good post. I agree with all of it. Of course we need pass rushing (still). The best pass rushers on the team might be Marques Murrell and Jason Trusnik and that’s just wrong!
P.S. the CB was Antoine Winfield.
