Alan Faneca Scouting Profile

So who is this guy the Jets just got named Alan Faneca? Here’s a quick compiled scouting report on former Steeler OG Alan Faneca, after the jump:

Physical Attributes: At 6′5″ 307 pounds, he is well built and has excellent size for a pure guard. He is an exceptional athlete for a guard, which is shown in that he can play Tackle when a team is desparate.  Well balanced and displays top-notch body control, very rarely out of position or loses leverage.

Attitude: Known for his intelligence, Faneca has an innate gift at understanding of his assignment and how to prevent the defense meeting their assignments. Known for his hard work and competitiveness, Faneca can be a “nasty” player.  Very well respected by his teammates.

Skills: He sees the game very well, and can be a tide turner on the run or in pass protection.  Best suited as a Let Guard.  Quick off the snap and known for his explosiveness.  Has excellent hands and knows proper placement, can create space with a great hand punch.  Known for his pulling technique he does it well short or long.  Good sense when in space.

Questions: As a player over 30, will Faneca have durability concerns for the Jets?

  1. I’m not that worried about his age all that much, because as long as they avoid chronic knee problems, offensive and defensive linemen age pretty well. I’m sure the team doesn’t expect him to play out the contract, and I think we can expect three solid years and either a renegotiation or his release. Basically a repeat of Pete Kendall, which is fine as long as we have a replacement ready when we release him in three years.

  2. A buddy of mine is a huge Steeler fan, and he made a good point: Faneca will make both the left AND right sides of our line better because he’s such a great pull blocker. Is preseason here yet?

  3. A buddy of mine is a also a huge Steeler fan – said the same thing with one caveat — it doesn’t matter who the Steelers plug at guard in their SYSTEM.

  4. fair enough about the system, but didn’t that system move to arizona?

  5. Anything to make the offense better! Last year we lost two games that we would have won if ONE field goal was a TD instead. Five additional games would have either been won or tied if the offense had scored ONE addtional TD. Those two differences would have made the Jets an eleven and five team. Ten and six if they split the ties. Faneca saw the Jets and saw them win. I think that’s why he picked them over the Rams and 49ers. If he makes the offense better by seven points a game it will be worth it!
