The Palm Beach Post reports that the Jets have set up a meeting with free agent running back Jesse Chatman from Miami, they guy who took over after Ronnie Brown was injured last season. From sources, the RB is scheduled to meet with the Jets on Wednesday as the Jets are “looking for a backup to Thomas Jones”
Although this is a head scratcher at first glance, signing a player like Chatman would likely be a move to displace a player down the charts, like my boy from JMU — Alvin Banks. Chatman proved that he’s an NFL ready player in a bind, and the Jets would be stocking their roster to prevent derailing the running game should Thomas Jones need to sit out some games.
Here’s a quick rundown on Chatman
Height / Weight: 5-8, 223 pounds
Age / Years Played: 28, 6 years
College: Eastern Washington

Why are they so reluctant to put the ball in leon Washingtons hands? The guy is a playmaker. No one knows if he’s an every down back because he’s never been given the oppurtunity. But look at what he did Christmas day 2 years ago against the Dolphins…he has playmaker written all over him. We don’t need a backup for TJ…we have one, who honestly should be splitting reps almost 50-50 with him in Washington.

Yeah, that Dolphins game was such fun! That highlight on the tube was a classic!

if we sign him this will make no sense whatsoever. Maybe after the draft when you see what happens with Mcfadden n such. not now. this would be a bad call.

right now neon leon is about the only playmaker on offense for the jets. he should not only be splitting carries but also getting some catches as well. hes sensational after the catch and in open field

Could be gamesmanship, make the Dolphins spend some money to re-sign Chatman as part of the run for Pace? Otherwise, this is an odd one.

hey guys..just found this site and wanted to make a few comments. as a jets fan you have to love what the 2008 team is shaping up to be. i believe this could be a good signing only because a) mcfadden most likely will be gone by the time the jets draft and b) you can’t have too many durable backs ( see the giants this past year) this team is better suited to draft gholston with the sixth pick or trade down to acquire more picks. I feel both qb’s can lead this team but kellen has more upside so let him start this year from game 1 and give him a shot.. from there we will see what we have to do with the qb situation and if things unfold with the way we all hope the jets can be serious contenders by 2009.. thanks go jets

why not pick up chatman? he proved he can make plays last year as well in Miami…signing him would just mean more legitimate depth at the running back position on our roster…i don’t think we need to worry about jesse chatman stealing too many legitimate carries from TJ or Leon. Another solid, change of pace back with nfl caliber abilities couldn’t hurt. Or, maybe they are setting up to use a move like this for trade purposes…? Maybe they aren’t interested in drafting a running back either. Just trying to think outside the box a little…

I could go either way on this one. so i guess it depends what he costs. i think the GIANTS have shown that you can draft running backs late (ryan grant, bradshaw) so i say SAVE THE MONEY, SAVE THE CAP ROOM, USE LEON, AND HOPE FOR MCFADDEN
i have to admit i am a GIANTS fan but still really like the Jets – i mean, how could you not like the Jets if you listen to Joe Benigno!

You don’t need to draft a RB in the first round to find a good one, this past year proved that. I’m not all for drafting McFadden. The game is won on the line and with defense…which is why I want Gholston. Our running game wont be a problem with Faneca and possible adding Woody (we might have even been better jsut having a line of 3 last yea aka no Clement or Clarke). And for Chatman, I don’t see why we’d have to throw so much money at him to get him to be our #3, I agree with Bassett and like the kid Banks. I really hope they don’t bring in Chatman.

Jet management is a mystery to me. There are numerous outstanding backs in the draft. Why waste your time. He’s 5’8″ tall. Why wouldn’t we use Leon if TJ had to sit? They should spend their time looking for a QB.
