Buzz: LB Brendan Ayanbadejo Visits Jets

by Bassett on March 3rd, 2008 at 3:30 pm

NFL.com is reporting that Chicago Bears’ special team ace Brendan Ayanbadejo is visiting with the Jets today.

Ayanbadejo obviously played for new STC Kevin O’Dea, and I imagine that O’Dea has an affinity for the guy. At 6’1″ 228 pounds, I’m not really sure what signing Ayanbadejo would do for the Jets.

Ayanbadejo has always been a special team contributor, and his size doesn’t really translate well for the Jets at 3-4 linebacker inside or out. The only real things it does is force Matt Chatham off the roster and gives me another tricky name to type …

One of those fourth round picks will bump Chatham.

Forget about typing his name. “B.A.” will do!

If we could get him he would probably not be part of our defensive package at all. Purely a specialist.

I’d like this move, although I wouldn’t enjoy the 2 day wait to find out what his salary actually was after it is inevitablty originally reported as 20m guaranteed.

In my mind it’s better to sign a guy who’s average at playing special teams and average at playing backup then to sign a good special teamer who can’t play backup.

After all you can only have 45 on your active roster during the season.

Ah, but B.A. is *great* at special teams, not just good. He could be a difference maker.

However, he reportedly wants a chance to play defense and with his lack of size, I think that’s unlikely.
