Newsday’s Tom Rock writes that the Jets are “pretty close to finalizing a deal” with offensive lineman Damien Woody.
Woody might be the final piece for the Jets in bolstering their O-Line in this initial flurry. With new line coach Bill Callahan on the staff and new players to work with (that he’s likely given the “all’s clear” on) it’s evident that the Jets are deadly serious about seeing improvement in the offensive line in 2008, which was one of the worst in the league in 2007.
Assuming Damien Woody comes aboard, would I like the line to be somewhat younger? Yes, but with players like Will Montgomery, Clint Oldenburg and Robert Jacob Bender waiting in the wings and learning from some solid vets, they can’t say that they didn’t have excellent examples and coaching to learn from whenever that time comes.
Either Tannenbaum has been reading the comments on this blog for months, or just agrees with you fans on what the team needed, serious help on the offensive and defensive line.
The moves that the Jets have made thus far have allowed them to let the Draft come to them, not bad when you own the #6 and #36 picks in the draft.

espn is reporting that the jets traded robertson for this yrs 4th and 5th (no. 114 and 151)
-

Robertson to Bengals for a 4th and a 5th round pick

How upset are you guys that you had to win that last game of the season? wouldnt you be picking 3 if you had lost that? typical Jets luck.
however, 6 is still good. trade D-Rob for those picks because these picks are gold even in those rounds. look at who the Jets have gotten in the 4th round the last few drafts.

Jacob Bender**

What is there to be upset about? It’s highly likely that the player they would most want-Chris Long-will be gone by three. Of the rest of them, there’s no one who would be available at three who won’t be available at six, and for significantly less.

With Vilma, D-Rob, McCareins, and Dyson gone, I wonder how much the Jets have added, on a net basis, to the payroll? Seems like they cleared a decent amount of cap space, while having a lot of cap to play with anyhow. Signing Woody and Pace would, basically, fill all of the biggest holes and allow the Jets to go BPA in the draft (it’s a draft deep at positions like WR, where the Jets could use a burner). If I only felt comfortable with KC or Chad, I’d be really psyched. I have no doubt the Jets will be significantly better next season, but to get to the elite level, the QB situation has to be addressed. Heck, they could always sign Culpepper and Moss and go for a Celtics-like “go for broke” run with veterans (not that I think that could happen).

The quarterback who I would like to see them bring in is Byron Leftwich. Leftwich was in an impossible situation in Atlanta, but he’s a young, high character guy who has performed reasonably well to this point in his career. It looked bad when he got beaten out by Garrard, but as it turned out, Garrard is pretty good.
I’m not sure why Leftwich isn’t getting a sniff on the market.

I still think we should pass up woody for gosder cherilus! GC from BC!
-
I wonder how much deadweight Tangini really cut? It seems there is alot more cap space than previously thought! The deal with Robertson is that his cap # escalated higher than how good he was playing. i would pay anyone $12million if they can get the job done
-
with all the attention to the O-line I would think that the play at the QB position would be significantly better. This will give us a year to evaluate whether or not KC is the real deal. He will have some time in the pocket, he’ll be able to work on his footwork (setting his feet rather than running for his life). I would also think that w/ the offensive line being significantly better on paper, we will look for a receiver in round 2 in what is a very deep receiver class

Bent, thank you for assigning real value to the DRobb salary dump. I think comparing draft pick numbers shows what a hosing this trade, as rumored/reported really is.
DRobb, when single teamed, single handedly destroyed the Steelers. Fans complained all year about him but the DE were much worse and DRobb actually got some pressures and penetration. I think he will be a star for 4-3 team.
Not happy about this one.

The rookie pot is separate.

Yes, I agree … Robertson will be a star on a 4-3 team b/c he was an absolute force for the 2003-2005 Jets.
Give me a break. The guy sucks. The Pitt game was his blind squirrel and nut impression.
-
D-Rob never lived up to his draft position. Remember, he was the all-around best defensive player in his draft year. That didn’t happen.
-
If Jenkins and Rogers (ProBowlers) deserve a 3rd and 5th – then a 4th & 5th is fair for Robertson. He has not been as good as the other two.
I hope Jeff is wrong about McFadden. We don’t need him. Thomas/Leon combination behind a good OL will be just fine. McFadden will not be as good a pro as he was in College ball. He has straight-line speed only, no moves, and goes down on first contact. Besides, Tangini won’t like his off field issues. Gholston or a trade down is what I want. -
If what Bent says about our available cap space is true (12m left after rookies), then how are we going after Pace and still hoping to resign Rhodes and perhaps Baker. I can see taking a chance on letting Baker play this year a little disgruntled, but not resigning Rhodes would be a pathetic move.
-
nep…i agree with you 100%…take gholston regardless of what RB falls to us…just my thoughts…

Thats a big one essentially we almost filled every gap we needed in 3 days time. I just hope that by doing this now Mangini can focus on PBA in the draft instead of trading up or picking for need, which never seems to work out.
Its getting tougher and tougher for me not see us drafting McFadden. But then again our anemic pass-rush definetely needs a jolt
