Tannenbaum Excited About ‘Great Opportunity’

by Bassett on March 3rd, 2008 at 11:34 pm

Tannenbaum held a press conference this evening and had the following to say about the moves since last week:

… on getting the green light from owner Woody Johnson.

“It was a great opportunity for the organization. We did a lot of planning with the coaches, the pro and college scouts, and we got tremendous support from Woody … that’s Woody Johnson — not Damien Woody.”

… on how this all worked out and reasons for the moves…

“We’re excited about what we accomplished here. It was a very methodical process and competitive with some of these players.  We’re really excited to add the four players we did in Kris, Alan, Calvin and Damien. We feel really good where we are relative to playing our cap for the next couple of years. I think all these guys should contribute here for a number of years and we just felt it was an opportunity.  I think sometimes spending in the NFL can become a little cyclical, and we had the opportunity to try to improve our team and we tried to take advantage of that opportunity.”

… on whether this spree notes a change in management style …

“We want to draft as many of our players and then proactively sign them to extensions like we did with Sione [Pouha].  That’s still our core philosophy. With these four players in particular, we just felt like there were opportunities to improve us at positions that could be upgraded.”

… on Dewayne Robertson’s status with the team …

“Right now, Dewayne is a member or the organization. Obviously we were close today, but he is a member of our organization.  Our off-season program starts on March 17 and unless something changes between now and then, we expect him to be here.”

… on whether there are any more blockbuster moves in the making …

“As someone suggested to me, I think we bought the suit. Now we just have to go get maybe a couple of neckties.  I hope over the next couple of days there will be a few more things that we’re looking at.”

What, pray tell is this suit made of?  Platinum?  Diamonds?  Enriched Uranium?

lolol…that was funny…anyway,i’ve always been a defensive guy myself…and im hoping they continue to build this deffense through the draft…i want a dominating deffense…plain and simple…the o-linemen they picked up should help to score more points…im looking at 17 to 23 per game…and with a dominating deffense thats all you need to win…and to win by alittle or alot a win is a win…deffenses win championships…proven again by the last SB…just my thoughts…

I know this won’t happen, but does the situation in Cleveland mean anything to us?

Would we be able to trade Chad and a 3rd rounder for Brady Quinn? That puts us in a weird situation, but if we sign a vet on the cheap ….

Or, if we truly are going to favor Chad in a “win now” mode, maybe we trade Kellen and a 3rd rounder – better salary situation for the Brownies, better long term QB prospect for us.

As I said, I know it won’ t happen, but I’d feel better with BQ as my future than Kellen.

    STL,

I’m not sure why either team would make that move. Cleveland would take a huge cap hit I believe if they tried to move Quinn, and both of our QBs are ready to play now, not sit behind Anderson. I’m not sure I understand how they would be better off. Obviously it would be nice to have a prospect of Quinn’s caliber on the roster, but Cleveland is not just going to give him away. It would take at least a mid first round pick to pry him loose.

Tannenbaum is doing great things for this team. You have to be happy with what hes done thus far. Now the Jets are entertaining Chatman, Wilson, James/Peterson, and apparently Ben Utecht the rest of the week – Based on the way the last couple of days have gone I guess the question is “how many” of those guys will get signed by the weekend…not “which one” – I’d take em all if Tanny can get them at a fair price, probably even Chatman…

Can you imagine going into the draft with little to no dire needs to address. The more free agents they sign the more likely it seems the Jets will trade out of the 6th pick. Do you guys agree? Unless maybe McFadden falls into their laps…

  5. avatar D says:

If mcfadden isnt there at 6 we def need to trade down and draft either another cornerback or a speedy wide reciever just in case coles pulls a pete kendall

  6. avatar m eazii says:

wow! mcfadden with this o-line?!? do u think we will draft him or let him pass by like adrian peterson? i say we definitely pick him up, it would be crazy!

  7. avatar GREENBLOOD says:

Tannebaum finaly admited who is to blame for frugality !!! WOODY !!! Thank you.

  8. avatar RJ says:

Let’s face it, we’re not changing QB or RB on the roster this year. So how are we going to get more pop on offense?

If we picked up Mcfadden I would honestly be surprised. He’s not a Mangini guy and they didn’t acquire Thomas Jones to trash him after 1 year behind a bad OL.

That’s why I suspect Tannenbaum will go after a WR in the draft. If he can’t trade down from #6, don’t be surprised if he trades up from the 2nd round to grab one.

As far as the 1st round… after all the recent acquisitions I think the best fit at #6 looks to be DT Sedric Ellis. He’s a beast with a high motor who will make our LB’s look like Probowlers.

  9. avatar Joe B. says:

With Jenkins now in the fold, Pouha extended and Dewayne not guaranteed to be out the door, I don’t understand how another DT at #6 makes sense.

The more money Tannenbaum ties up in free agents, the more likely I think it is that the FO is favoring trading down from #6 (hopefully to grab a guy like Malcolm Kelly or Limas Sweed).

There will be tons of suitors for the pick if McFadden is available, and although he may be tempting, the wise move is to trade out.

If he’s off the board by then and we can’t move down, would it be so terrible to reach for a guy like Kelly or one of the three CB’s (McKelvin, Jenkins, Talib)? Many say don’t draft out of need, but if the other option is picking someone like Ellis, who has little chance of starting this year, or Gholston at a position that we’ve already overspent on, I say fill one of the few remaining holes.

  10. avatar Tim says:

Hey JoeB., I think you may be on to something with your trade down scenario. But here’s another one for you…maybe Tangini is stockpiling free agents and filling holes because the want McFadden and don’t want everyone screaming that there were more pressing needs? Now, they can have their cake and eat it too so to speak. I know the Jets may not need McFadden, but (and this is a big but) if he ends up being the stellar back that most think he will, it wouldn’t be horrible having an actual superstar on the team for once.

  11. avatar BigBadBob says:

With the moves that were made, I still think our defense needs help in the secondary. Especially, with moss sticking around in NE for the next 2-3 years. Also, We need a big/deep threat WR, luckily this draft is heavy in both. I’m really hoping there will be another suiter for D-Rob, the cap space and picks we didn’t obtain when the cincy deal fell through is the first thing that frustrated me so far this offseason.

  12. avatar MAN says:

This is the first time since Parcells came to town that we are actually making significant moves during free agency and its a great time to be a fan…
I agree that if they plug the needs then they can address mcfadden in the draft, but how about Gholston? He is a beast, and playing along side Harris and now Pace is a scary thought- Defense wins titles and as we saw in the superbowl a team can never have enough pass rushers…
    Thoughts?

  13. avatar Jeff says:

It looks to me like a tradedown. I think our scouts saw that Quentin Groves is the best “pure” pass-rusher in the draft. And we can also grab Kelly and Gosder Cherilus at RT in rd2. NICE!

  14. avatar KevT says:

I say we are in good shape regardless…

We pick McFadden and he pairs with Thomas Jones, just like Cedric Benson did successfully (platooning backs works well too, something the Giants did as well)

We take Gholston and add one more edge rusher (Note: the Giants strategy worked as Tuck was almost DT size and could bull rush sometimes from the inside with his additional heft.)

We trade down and add from the deep pool of WR’s and CB’s.

This is a problem that I prefer having!

  15. avatar redd5 says:

With the Free Agent moves the jets have made, we’ve got a good solid foundation. Now, through the draft, we need to add one or two game changers. If there’s a chance to trade down to the middle of the 1rst, and pick up another 2nd round pick, I think you do it. Grab a bigtime WR, and a CB and we’ll be looking really strong for next year.

  16. avatar subwayfare says:

The dilemma with trading down is that it’s likely there will only be willing partners if McFadden is still there at six. Unless by some miracle Chris Long is still there I doubt many teams behind us rate the other potential candidates highly enough to offer anything worthwhile. I do think the FO would trade down if they could. They seem to be employing a sound philosophy of filling key spots with high-end, proven talent that will start for at least three years so they can draft slightly more raw prospects and have good models to coach them into.

  17. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

Subway, some mock drafts have Matty Ice being around when we pick. While I am not enamored with him, Baltimore supposedly is. They might not want to pay a premium for him but someone else might.

At this point, with these signings, I suspect Tangini will be relaxed on draft day.

We could sign another best CB in the draft to star opposite Revis for years.

We could trade down and get a potential WR and something else.

If Matty Ice is there and I am wrong and he is really good, we could pull a Bolts and ensure the future with either Kellen or Matty.

The only thing that will depress me is spending all that money on a spindly legged, baby making, RB who may have excelled in large part due to his OL (c.f. Felix Jones who averaged more yards per carry than DMC).

  18. avatar GREENBLOOD says:

Pass on McFadden ??? You guys can’t be serious ! You love loosing and whining about it. It makes me sick.

  19. avatar billvv says:

I’m really impressed with the posts. Now that we’re over our panic attack, I agree with each of them. To get to trade down two things need to be in place. One, DMac is there, and two, we don’t have any other pressing needs we MUST fill first. The C’boys are the only team that both needs him and has the trade capital to seal the deal. They have to believe we’d take him or they don’t need us.

Our actual needs at CB and WR can be filled with those two picks without changing the rest of the draft picks. The quality and depth at CB and WR are such that any of two or three guys would do.

If we do take DMac, where does Washington go? The FO doesn’t seem to think he’s expendable. Who is coming up at WR? Who is the second CB?

  20. avatar joe says:

Nah, don’t hate on DMC. he rushed for 6.3, 5.8 and 5.6 ypc over his career. As his carries went up his YPC went down which is pretty normal. You could make the same argument about Felix Jones you are making about McFadden — maybe all the attention focused on McFadden allowed the change of pace back to rush so well.

The guy has the combine performance, he has the college production, and there is more of a consensus about his status as the elite college running back then there was about Adrian Petersen. I dont think the Jets will pick him.

  21. avatar subwayfare says:

I would have no problem taking McFadden if the trade down offers don’t surface. The potential is a decent value at six.

  22. avatar comesimangia says:

Does anyone know what we have to deal with interms of picks? 6 overall, 6th in the 2nd round, 2 fourths, and a 5,6, and 7 rounder? Is that right?

  23. avatar billvv says:

If you’d like to see your instincts played out in a draft, check out Draft Tek where each team has a representative and drafting logic is programed in. They run it every couple of days and you can make comments on the blog of the Jets rep Dan Riback, who was the subject of Randy’s Radar Feb 26th.

  24. avatar Bent says:

comesimangia, I think you are almost right, but our 5th rounder went to get Jenkins and the other 5th rounder we got from Cincy obviously never happened.

    So it’s currently: 1, 2, 4, 4 (NO), 6, 7
