Looks like the Bengals and Jets have called off the Dewayne Robertson trade. Foxsports‘ Alex Marvez has the details.

FOXSports.com has learned that Dewayne Robertson of the New York Jets, who met with Bengals officials at team headquarters on Monday, will not be traded to Cincinnati.

See? This is what happens when these reports spread like wildfire and are taken as Gospel. There’s a long ways to the draft … we’ll see how this all works out … Jets need that cap space back though … ugh.

how many times are these guys gonna talk sh.. up and get it all wrong…i mean…god bless…idiots…

  4. avatar SackDance99 says:

Since D-Rob really doesn’t have a position on the team anymore and is an expensive situational substitution, I hope the Jets work out something different with Cincy or deal him elsewhere.

  5. avatar klecko71 says:

great job on that picture….thats hilarious =)

  6. avatar Pera says:

i dont really like this cause were gunna ship him off for nothing now

  7. avatar TOON2388 says:

can he play DE in the 3-4?

  8. avatar rj says:

i think itd be best to trade him only for the cap room but if we kep him its really not to bad. when we show 4-3 in situations he would be great to put next to jenkins come on now. and also in run specific and goaline packages when we gotta beef up the d line hed be excellent. when they run a 3-4 and run specific packages he can absolutely play the d.e

  9. avatar v-rad says:

Huh…. nice picture.. but i think we got make this trade, just to clear up cap space to make sure we have money to sign upcoming contracts. (i.g. Rhodes and Coles)

  10. avatar niko1677 says:

Well it was nice while the deal lasted. The reality is that it would have been highway robbery for us to get pick(s) for a player that most teams now realize is superfluous and will likely be cut by June when he is due a $3mm roster bonus. THUD…that’s me falling from cloud 9.

  11. avatar dakar says:

hopefully denver will take drob and his big salary cap off our hands…i mean…1 can only dream right…lolol…

  12. avatar rj says:

well hopefully drob gets settled soon. but does anyone know where the jets are looking to go now in regards to FA or are they jsut gunna go kinda under the radar until the draft?

  13. avatar Ed L says:

i think our next step should be to lock up rhodes with a big deal….we need him and he is a very important foundation of our defense….coles is making i think what 10 or 11 million in the next two years…i say we let him play this year and see what he can do and then give him the contract next season to assure him he will retire as a jet….

Can we even afford to sign Rhodes and Coles right now to long term deals?

  14. avatar Bent says:

Signing Coles to a long term deal will actually probably save money in the short term. Say he gets the same deal as T Jones, 4 years 20m with 12m guaranteed. Then we only pay him 10 over the next two years instead of 11. The saving will be greater if they backload the contract and the cap effect of cutting him after 2 years if it comes down to it would be very similar to the guaranteed 11m they had offered him.

  15. avatar rj says:

i think all of that is pending what they do with robertson. its apparent there gunna try n get rid of him regardless so i guess thats a good sign. but i agree rhodes is the best player on our defense no question about it and he was an absolute steal from where we got him in the draft. now jets gotta pay him accordingly though which will be pricy but worth every damn penny

  16. avatar Bent says:

It’s a huge risk, but maybe they are considering not signing him (Rhodes) to an extension with the hope that there is no cap in 2009, and the fallback option of making him the franchise player if there is one. We know that can often rub guys the wrong way, but it would mean he had a high salary for that one year. Just a thought.

leberfeld says the robertson deal went dead for reasons other than money but i don’t have a subscription to jetsconfidential. if anyone does, go check it out and let us know pls.

    thanks.

This is second time Cincy has traded for a DT only for the deal to fall through. They originially traded a 3rd and 5th for Shaun Rogers, but the deal fell apart and he went to Cleveland for a 3rd and Leigh Bodden, so that ended up better for Detroit (Bodden is much better than 5th rd pick). Hopefully we can also find a way to get a better deal for Robertson.

I hear ESPN is reporting that Ohio and Texas are taking Hillary! Pending completion of a physical of course…

CANT WE GET RID OF BARTON TOO AND GET GOLSTON IN THE
DRAFT WHY IS BARTON SO IMPORTANT TO KEEP

  22. avatar subwayfare says:

I imagine it’s possible the trade was contingent on a new deal and they couldn’t come to terms. His chronic knee problem might have gummed up the works if he was seeking big guarantees. Guess it will all come out in the wash.

  23. avatar JP says:

I’m considering the picture as my new desktop wallpaper — that makes the JetsBlog hall of fame for sure.

  24. avatar subwayfare says:

Perhaps if D-Rob and his agent see that no one wants to pay him he’ll rework his Jets deal rather than be cut. In that case he could possibly be traded later, and maybe even on better terms, if it’s clear the Jets won’t be mortally wounded cap-wise by keeping him.

  25. avatar ramble914 says:

This is the story by Dan Leberfeld of Jetsconfidential on why the DRob deal fell through:
“A major reason the trade of defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson to Cincinnati is off might have nothing to do with money.

According to a source close to the Bengals, Cincinnati called off the trade because of concerns about Robertson’s problematic left knee.
Remember in 2005, Robertson was having problems with the knee, and Herman Edwards shut him down for the season in December.

Well at the time, Edwards said that Robertson had “bone-on-bone” in the knee.

That can be a career-ending condition. Just ask Curtis Martin.

Well according to the Bengal source, after D-Rob took a physical, the team didn’t like the reports they were given on the left knee. So the deal was called off.

The irony of this story is that Robertson played the last two years on that knee without missing a game.”

Those 4th and 5th round picks are looking real good about now.

  26. avatar jeff i says:

    thanks ramble 914. that’s bradway’s mess.

  27. avatar dakar says:

well the bradway and herm era are still haunting us…they were the absolute worst…but then again we did have some bad 1′s…kotite anybody…lolol

  28. avatar Liam says:

i offcially ban anyone from writing “lol” on this website. dakar, if you write “lolol” again, i will pay kris jenkins 750,000 to break his weight limit and sit on you

  29. avatar D says:

unless the cap went to 200 million and i didnt notice how in the heck do we have all this money to pay all these new guys, keep this waste of a top 5 pick, and sign all our draft picks?? he needs to go if i was mike id take a 7th rounder just to get him out of here.. by the way anyone else proud of what the jest have done in the past three days???

  30. avatar badgermatt says:

trade him for a bag of balls and cones. i bet he was greedy in negotiating a new deal. this guy is no good for this team and needs to go. at this point i would take a 6th rounder for this guy who hurts this team and makes way too much money when we dont have room under the cap anymore.

i am sure tannenbaum will be more patient though and get whatever he can. however, the fact that the bengals wanted him and they couldnt work something out is going to seriously deter other teams for going for him.

    good luck

  31. avatar Chase says:

Bassett – great job on the picture. I almost fell out of my chair.

  32. avatar Claus says:

According to draftday.dk the deal fell apart, not because of the physical, but because D-Rob refused to rework his contract.

  33. avatar Claus says:

NY daily news is reporting that too:

“But a tentative trade fell apart because Robertson failed to reach a contract extension with Cincinnati, according to his agent, Hadley Engelhard.”

“Said Engelhard: “We couldn’t come to terms, plain and simple.”"

  34. avatar 96debacle says:

Curse you D-Rob and your Greed/bumb knee!!!
We are all ready to ship you out and you have to go screw it up!
I bet its greed. He knows this is probably his last shot and he’s done in about 3-4 YR due to his knee.

  35. avatar badgermatt says:

I hear your pain but you can’t blame a guy for wanting more money when THIS IS HIS JOB. wouldnt you try to make every cent you could. it’s not like he is breaking any rules. he is just being a difficult employee. happens all the time and i think that a man should be able to make his own financial decisions without unfair criticism
