Five Questions for a Panthers Blogger: Kris Jenkins Edition
Will Brinson, a Carolina Panthers blogger from Mr. Mittens was kind enough to contact TJB about the Kris Jenkins trade. What follows is our questions to Will about Jenkins, in return, here are the questions he asked us about the deal.
TJB: In brief, what are your thoughts from the perspective of a Carolina Panthers fan? Do you like the trade? Why or why not?
MrM: Yeah, I like it. It stinks to lose a guy that should be a premium/Pro Bowl DT (albeit pushing 30) for two draft picks that don’t at least involved the word “second”, but it helps that I resigned myself to the fact during the few days leading up to the deal. See below, but I think the Cats were pretty eager to get Jenkins out of Charlotte. And, there’s never anything wrong with cap space.

TJB: We Jets fans know all about “it just isn’t working between us” …. see D-Rob or Jon Vilma for proof. What were the 2-3 most relevant reasons why Kris Jenkins wasn’t fitting in Carolina?
MrM: Well, it doesn’t really seem fair that an athlete making millions of dollars can be unhappy in a certain city and let that affect his training and performance, but, frankly, them’s the shakes. And I think Jenkins wanting to be out of Charlotte probably was a factor. Part of that has to stem from what I think is an obvious deterioration of the relationship between the staff/front office and Jenkins, following last offseason’s trade rumor turmoil. And I think the amount of money he was going to command presented problems in terms of what the Panthers want to do with the fan-favorite but terrifyingly ineffective in 2007 Julius Peppers.
TJB: What does Jenkins do well? Where does he excel? Is he consistent, or are those things that you just see once in a while?
MrM: He’s an absolute monster at rushing the passer (hence my high number on sacks). When he’s not obese and he’s happy, he’s like a bulldozer. Or a moose. But in ya’lls defensive scheme, he’s just going to command double teams the entire time, which will free up your linebackers even more. Remember that at least half of Peppers’ horrible season in 2007 was, sadly, not against double teams; teams normally would prefer to put two guys on Pepp, but Jenkins actually playing well (as opposed to JP) prohibited that.
TJB: Is it true that he was pushing 4 bills at the end of last season? Is the barbecue in Charlotte really that good?
MrM: No question that he was sitting on the plus side of 375. Dude got huge. And frankly, I don’t blame him. A) if I was in the midst of the collapse that ‘07 was, I probably wouldn’t be maxing out my (allegedly already bad) physical shape; and B) yes, the Q is actually that good. It would seem Jenkins likes the Eastern-style a little more though.
TJB: Anything else we should know about Kris Jenkins?
Obviously the previous issues of possible alcoholism and depression are there hiding out there in the past and I hate to harp on the weight thing, but it’s the difference between a DT just clogging a lane and a guy actually able to make plays. That, and being in shape keeps guys from getting hurt. But if he’s motivated, healthy and in shape, he’s going to wreck havoc, have a monster season and will be a perfect fit in the system you guys are operating because of his ability to soak up double teams.

bassett, nice work. as this jets off-season has shown, we fans know as much (and sometimes more) than the front office. great to see the carolina fan’s take.
Thus the weight clause and relatively low guaranteed money. It seems like a good shot to me.
When the deals are announced they give the worst case scenario for the team/best case for the player. This was a very ingenious deal bt Tanenbaum, now Jenkins needs to produce!
Good stuff.
Does Will legitimately not know how to spell “T-J-B” over at his site, or is he having some fun with y’all?
its impotant for a person to feel appreciated by others…and jenkins is the type of person who likes to feel appreciated by others like most people…and since the jets and us fans feel that towards him…i think he will gladly work hard and be happy he made this move to the jets and that will translate in a really good season for him and us…just my thoughts…
[...] Okay, most — dare we say all — of you read Mister Mittens, right? So, you probably don’t even need to see this link right here. Still, we thought it was worth at least pointing out that MRM got a chance to swap Five Questions with The Jets Blog about the recent Kris Jenkins for draft picks trade between the Panthers and Jets. Now, we know that’s not fresh material, but when there’s nothing on the home page (because certain ****s are “working”), well, we have to take care of that. Anyway, you’ll learn all about Jenkins’ four pound a day barbque habit, as well as all the weight loss incentives in his new deal. Kick it. Five Questions for Panthers Blogger [...]
I think I am legitimately becoming dyslexic. My bad (fixed).
[...] standing still and clogging the lane). Answers from Bassett after the jump. Oh yeah, and check out my answers to his questions. 1. Mister Mittens: I know you guys are busy catching up on/breaking the news on the Jets next [...]
Typical any NEW YORK fan…You guys get a damn steal on a Pro Bowl DT and you still arent happy…I dont know who is worse, you or the filth of the common Eagles fan. Fact is, You got talent, size, and decent speed for a fat a** for almost NOTHING!! What can Carolina get with 3rd and 5th pick?? Maybe a DB and DL from Southern Mississippi Junior College at A&T on the Rock….Be grateful because, yes being a nuisance to the Panthers by running his fat mouth, he his still loaded with talent and one of the best DTs in the game. Again, be grateful for once, you guys got just got away with one.
i think he was an awsome pick up…he’s gonna do wonders for this deffense…just my thoughts…
Who are you talking to Jack? Everyone here is pretty happy with the trade.
From a Carolina PSL owner. The Jets really stole one with this trade. The Panther organization was using the weight, Kris’s desire to live closer to home in Maryland (?) and a few other excuses to move him. The reality is this- the team was playing poorly last year and he called them out in the locker room with the press present. Of course, it made all the papers and nobody in the organization was happy. But Jenkins was right on both counts- they were playing poorly and he should have called ‘em out. Fact is, he could call anyone he wanted to out because he was the only guy showing up week in and week out and putting everything on the field.
One thing Jets fans will never have to worry about- Kris Jenkins comes to play every week. I love the guy and I hope he makes the transition to a 3-4 successfully.
