Denver CB Interested In the Jets?

by Bassett on March 9th, 2008 at 1:31 am

Newsday has learned that Domonique Foxworth, the restricted free agent corner for the Broncos, is interested and willing to talk to the Jets. But according to the player’s agent, no talks have occurred between either sides to this point.

Intriguing since Denver is looking for a 4-3 tackle and the Jets have one to spare. Foxworth though is a nickel corner, not a frontline starter, and with the Jets glut at the #2 CB / nickel role, it’s hard to imagine that the Jets would do the trade without at least a late round pick thrown into the mix coming back to New York.

My thought is, if the Jets could just get picks instead of Foxworth, they’d make that move first.

    yeah i agree…get more picks…

Why aren’t we in the mix for Fitzgerald? How about D-rob and Coles for Fitzgerald? It will be easier for Arizona to work out a deal with D-Rob (given his career numbers) and Coles (given his last year’s performance) than Fitzgerald. And quite frankly we have some room left and a Front Office that can work magic with contracts. Plus clearing the room from Coles and D-rob will provide extra to keep Fitzgerald happy. We get our big play receiver and a good character guy. Arizona gets a good 4-3 DT and a smaller receiver to pair up with their remaining larger number 1 receiver.

With no 3rd round pick, D/Rob is the only trade bait we have to get us back into the round. How the mighty has fallen. Hard to believe we couldn’t close the deal with the Bengals on their 4th & 5th picks for him. I get the feeling there is some kind of medical risk re: his long-term durability.

It is interesting how one week of free agent activity will change a franchise. For all the doubters out there who felt that Mangini and the FO would scare away potential players from coming here because of “tough workouts in camp” or “stubborness with contracts”, that is obviously not the case anymore.

The problem with your logic is that Arizona switched to a 3-4 last year, and as you stated DRob is a classic 4-3, so he may not be that attractive to them. I would, however, love to pick up Fitzgerald.

  6. avatar Pete says:

Great Comments Dr K. The media is unbelievable. It is clear no matter what the Jets do, most of the media is going to find something wrong with it.

  7. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

I don’t see how a trade like this would help us anywhere other than the salary cap. there’s got to be SOMETHING better available for a former top 5 pick

  8. avatar Bent says:

Foxworth isn’t that bad though. Certainly an upgrade over what we have and if we got (say) a fourth rounder for him, that might not be an upgrade (notwithstanding our 4th round drafting prowess).

He was born in England, apparently. I never knew that.

  9. avatar ED says:

Who are we kidding here, folks? If Denver is the only suitor than we are scr…in trouble because Mikie S. knows DRob will eventually get cut. Right? We need another team to get interested by throwing another player into the mix, like Justin Miller. Otherwise, DRob is gone and we get nothing. Worse, actually, because we still get hit with the splatter of the salary cap ramifications.

  10. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

Foxworth isn’t terrible, but he’s not a significant upgrade over our current nickelbacks. Plus, we know the jets are going to address the CB position at some point in the draft – which is very deep at CB. Why flood our roster with mediocre players at that position?

  11. avatar Bent says:

ED, the salary cap ramifications are the same if he is traded or if he is released.

If they can’t find a suitor for him, they could keep him by agreeing to meet in the middle, although I think recent comments to that end are probably just to induce other teams to trade for him, rather than waiting and hoping he’ll become available for nothing.

  12. avatar Bent says:

Personally, Brandon, I think he’s much better than Miller or Drew Coleman, but I guess we can leave the player evaluation to the front office!

  13. Besides, Foxworth is younger than Hank Poteat or *gasp* David Barrett, so his prowess can grow

  14. avatar subwayfare says:

I just wonder what D-Rob’s agent is thinking. If he doesn’t renegotiate and waits to get cut he has the freedom to make whatever deal he can. Then again, if there’s only one interested team, say Denver, they have all the bargaining power. It’s a risk that might pay off if there are two or more teams competing but it could blow up in his face.

The safer bet for both D-Rob, and one that also benefits the Jets, might be to come to terms on a reasonable, relatively short term deal, get him in camp, project the image that he’s desired, valued and going to play…and then see what happens around the draft or later when someone loses a DT to injury. He can always try and improve on his deal then when a team is truly in need and the Jets can get a little value back.

But perhaps D-Rob’s agent has already gotten feelers from other teams about what they’d do if he were cut.

  15. avatar Bent says:

I can’t see that scenario working out, because if the Jets sign him to a new deal and then immediately trade him, they get an immediate cap hit of all of the guaranteed money. Robertson is never going to agree to a deal with low enough guarantees to make that fiscally possible.

    The options are:

    1. He stays, gets his 11m and then becomes a free agent*
    2. He restructures and stays
    3. He is traded before the roster bonus is due
    4. He is released before the roster bonus is due

    * at which point he could be resigned, franchised, franchised and traded or signed by another team which could contribute towards a potential compensatory pick going to the Jets in 2010.

    Get this MAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. avatar subwayfare says:

Right. Thanks. Forgot about the cap hit on a new deal. Your breakdown of the situation should make it clear to those screaming for high compensation how weak the Jets’ position actually is. And why Mike T. is such a fan of frontloading deals.

your absolutely right, that’s what I get for thinking about this at 5 am. The argument for moving to a 3-4 DE in Arizona is probably moot as well. How about trading BT and then going after Gholston? Although, the counter to that is you have Pace playing the pass rushing OLB and then you have Thomas on the other side, and as I undertand it, in more of a run stopping position. Gholston’s strenght would be his pass rushing ability. Maybe Coles and a draft pick, or in a dream world, maybe Coles straight up as a cap saving move for Arizona. Yeah, I know, my desire to get
Fitzgerald is making for some illogical deals.

  19. subwayfare–if his agent got some feelers from other teams, the other teams would be tampering

  20. avatar subwayfare says:

Pablo- And we know that just isn’t done in the NFL, right?

  21. avatar seanmac says:

There will be a market for Roberson before all is said and done. I would think Detroit or (especially) Tampa would show some interest, as he’s a perfect fit for their scheme. Marvin Lewis has maintained that he’s still interested, and Denver has no viable DTs on their roster at this point. For the record, I’m fine with Robertson staying, but I still firmly expect him to get moved, likely for a similar package to the one the Bengals were offering.

  22. avatar jetcrazy52 says:

i think seanmac is right, but that market has to heat up soon, preferably before the draft so we can get some good draft picks (1st or or second and fourth or fifth) for a coles-drob packaage. I think this would be well suited for denver with rod smith done and javon walker out, that would give them a good 3 wr team with marshall and stokly as well as their need for a dt. That would clear up plenty of cap room to sign a larry fitzgerald, who we would need to fill in and then some for coles, and then we could draft either a cb or another good wr with that pick

  23. avatar steviek says:

i saw some rumours to the effect that cincy pulled out because they’re considering a shift to the 3-4.
