Buzz: Denver GM Fired — D-Rob Deal Now Off?

by Bassett on March 13th, 2008 at 1:05 am

Something’s rotten in the city of Denver.

Did Shanahan poison (figuratively of course) his GM to secure the throne? Today, Mike Shanahan made the announcement of the hasty firing rather than the team’s owner … alas poor Sundquist, I knew him well.

It’s hard to say as it’s a late-breaking story, and details are sketchy at best right now.

For all we know, Dewayne Robertson might have been waxing up his snowboard today. So what does this mean for the 4-3 Defensive Tackle? Here’s my two thoughts, which I realize aren’t that insightful.

  1. Conventional wisdom would say that the deal is now off, and that the “feverish” movement was by the Jets trying to get the deal done before the window closed. It seems that Shanahan has taken over “shopping for the groceries” to one degree or another … maybe even possibly as a direct result of whatever deal was being struck with the Jets.
  2. Maybe the deal is still on? If Sundquist’s role was so shaky to be fired now, just seven weeks from the draft, then Tannenbaum could well have been working with the power behind the throne (Shanny) the whole time.

The first option seems more likely to me, but it will be hard to say.

Get thee to a scoutery!!

Shanahan runs the show here in Denver end of story.

This just in…. 60 degree weather here in Denver. Suck it east coast!

D-ROB is a good fit in Denver. We like our athletes overrated and originally from east coast teams i.e. K-MART and Iverson.

Dominique Foxworth is a character guy. I don’t think the Broncos really want to get rid of him but their defense blows. They can’t stop the run and can’t rush the passer, sound familiar?

Ah well… Trade him or cut him. We need the cap space.

Trader Mike is on the prowl. Maybe the Lundquist firing was just a formality to reinforce that Shanahan is the real sherriff in town. Their defense needs an upgrade and why not a former first rounder in D-Rob? If a trade goes down I have a feeling the return won’t be too appealing, but then again Tannenbaum usually has shown to get good value.

P is right. Shanahan has had the power in Denver for a while, so the change probably goes more to their relationship than any personnel decisions. I doubt the GM was bringing in anyone Shanahan did not want.
The bigger issue may be Denver’s recent history of bringing in d line and not having it work.
I mean when do they catch on to Shanahan there? Regardless of the 2 SB’s, when would he have been run out of town in NY?

Shanahan has a “lifetime” contract. He can only resign, he can never be fired. Being a GM in Denver is only a title nothing more. The ironic thing is that the Broncos need D-Rob more than the Jets need D-Fox.

To hold get a low round draft pick for a player who a few years ago put the R in FEAR; is only 26; and has shown flashes of brilliance reeks of Tangini Juice!

Adam Schine & Sol Wilcotts report on NFL Radio today that D-Rob is still considered “highly coveted” and that they expect he will be traded. Despite the purge in Denver (which is widely reported to be a ‘scapegoating’ of Ted Sundquist for recent DEN failures and questionable moves), Schine notes that “Denver still makes a lot of sense” as a trade partner, and the deal should still be on the table as “business as usual”.

Having said all this, they confirm that the longer DRob stays out there, the longer his value diminishes.

Newsday is reporting that talks between the Jets and DEN on DRob are ‘revived’, but that Foxworth is close to re-upping with them.
