The Globe’s Mike Reiss writes on his blog, Reiss’ Pieces that he was part of the taping of an ESPN show where beat writers from each city made a pick in their slot. Here’s how it broke down 1-6:
1) Dolphins — DE Chris Long (Virginia)
2) Rams — OL Jake Long (Michigan)
3) Falcons — DT Glenn Dorsey (LSU)
4) Raiders — DE Vernon Gholston (Ohio State)
5) Chiefs — DT Sedrick Ellis (USC)
6) Jets — RB Darren McFadden (Arkansas)
It’s amazing how outside the top two picks, everything is topsy turvy … this is going to be a very, very interesting draft for us Jets fans …

april 26th cant come soon enough…..honestly if they take mcfadden, if they take gholston, if they take one of the DT’s, another o-lineman, hell even a qb – are we really gonna be upset?? I have my personal preferances, as I am sure everyone does – but when that card comes to the podium and I hear “w/ the 6th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft The New York Jets Select……”I’m going to get pumped and as long as it is not a complete out-of-nowhere pick I’m going to agree w/ it . Especially when it comes to the mcfadden vs. gholston debate. seriously, i have no idea how you can be pissed if the jets draft either one…..thats just me though

With the 6th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft The New York Jets Select……
Owen Schmitt FB West Virginia. (loud erruptions of groans followed by boos) -
This brings up an interesting question. If Matt Ryan still isn’t picked when the Jets draft, do they select him. He’s supposedly the best qb in the draft, they have rebuilt the o-line, and he wouldn’t be forced into the starter’s job with CP and KC around. Therefore, he would have time to learn the ropes and if both CP and KC fail to secure the starting job, then we can see what Ryan offers.
-
think plan A is if they have a chance to trade down they will. i could see the cowboys making a move, or a team wanting dorsey or ellis or the tackle out of vandy like… denver?
whats a move worth from 6 to 15 or so? read folks were working on updating the values in the draft trade chart. -
trade PENNINGTON,COLES,ROBERTSON for even MORE picks. draft either MALCOLM KELLY or LIMAS SWEED and either FLACCO or BROHM. With the remaining picks…DE,CB,OL,TE(not necessarily in THAT order).
-
18and1
I think that wouldnt be a bad idea to snag ryan but i feel like with all these signings this year the jets want to win now, or in the very near future. I think theyll draft a player who can make an imediate impact not someone who has to wait a couple years most likely.
I definatly think we should draft a QB but i dont know about ryan. The QB class is deep, i wouldnt even mind someone like Andre Woodson later in the draft, thats actually what i think would be a better choice then to go 6th with ryan.
Also i really really think that bill parcells is gunna draft jake long. -
woodson is pooooh. kentucky QBs are poooh in general. i would rather have chad henne later on….
and i work with a guy from comcast in philly who does their nfl stuff…on air…. watches tape like a madman. he doesnt love gholston, says he is kind of stiff / too much of a workout monster… and also doesnt love mcfaddon but thinks the jets have to take him at 6 if he is there
-
Alot of people didn’t like Merrimama few years ago, and six teams passed on Peterson last year, at this point I am kind of tired of what we are going to do with our first pick, I am content with McBabymaker or Gholston. I am interested in what are prospects are in the later rounds. That is where championships teams are made.
-
One option that hasn’t been discussed and I keep finding myself thinking about is the possibility of taking a corner at #6. After all the other moves they’ve made, it’s arguably an area of need, especially if they have designs on competing with the Pats, Colts and rest of the league, which seems to be becoming a pass-first league. They’ve upgraded the lines, the linebacking corps, the running backs (to an extent) — still haven’t seen any help in the secondary.
This FO has a way of playing their cards close to the vest — last year no one had them making the move to get Revis. I just think all we keep hearing about McDaddy or Gholston is part of the smokescreen to hide their true intentions.
Just a thought.
-
R in CT….is there really a corner that is worthy of the 6 pick? The best case for getting a corner would be to have McFadden fall to us, trade with Dallas for their 2 late first rounders and trade one of those for Deangelo Hall or take a corner late first. Do you know if there are any CB’s worthy of the high pick?
-
The reason for there being no CB in the top 6 is because the two top guys are McKelvin and Rodgers-Cromartie and they are from small schools.
-
McKelvin and DRC look really good too. At least one of them is going top 10 and the other should be gone by 15. Drafted a CB at 6 wouldn’t be the worst thing the Jets could do. The value is also there for both of those guys.
-
Are we really going to be upset with any one of the top six players? C. Long, J. Long, McFadden, Gholston, Ryan, or Dorsey would fill a need for the Jets. And it can be argued that McKelvin could replace Dorsey or Ryan as one of the six. I for one am not going to get caught up in who we should take because anyone of these guys will increase our talent level. Let’s not forget that we also have the 36th pick which should prove to be very valuable.
-
We can only get Gholston, C Long or McFadden in my eyes out of those 6, I like the CBs but not at 6th. I think Revis will be better than either one of the CBs and he was picked 12th.
-
joe, I love your thinking. I don’t know about any other Jets fans, but I would love either one, meaning McFadden or Gholston. Vbsiena24′s post reminded me of this video… http://youtube.com/watch?v=rZxNeFLuY98
-
And a dispute for the pick of a CB; I think we need a CB too, but I don’t see any CB worth taking with the 6th pick. McKelvin reminds me too much of Justin Miller and I really DRC.
-
we trade 3rd pick, coles and d-rob as a package, get anywhere from a 10-30th pick in this draft. We have now cleared up cap room, draft gholston to make our defense among the tops in the league, pick either malcolm kelly, limas sweed, or if its in the 20-30 range dan connor. Great player, great guy. Then, with our 36th pick select owen schmitt. He’ll still be around since he’s a FB, but a freakin’ bone crushing, helmet smashing machine who will learn under tony richardson and eventually take over and lead leon and jones to their full potential as a running back tandom
-
efootball….we don’t have a 3rd pick, drob is worth nothing when he most likely will be a post june 1st cut, coles is a 30 year old WR with concussion problems who wants more money than he’s worth…how are all these going to add up to a first round draft pick, please explain this to me??
Owen schmitt is a bruising FB, but is completely one dimensional, he’ll be lucky to get selected in the third round, definately not the first 5 picks in the second.
-
i think the owen schidt thing was a joke.
-
any news on ty law?

#6 – BPA
#36 – Flacco – 6’6″ QB! Laser, Rocket arm! -
Flacco won’t be there at 36.
-
Laser Rocket arm. LOL, is he going to wear #18 too?
-
Trade down, trade D-Rob, and stockpile some second round picks, who are cost efficient, and less embarrassing if busts. Also would be interested to read more about successful drafts slots, as I was once told that interior linemen have a much higher success rate, from early rounds, than running backs. (D’Brick may break that mold, in his only run block.) Still would like another mauling guard and sacking lineman/OLB more than McDaddy. QB is a huge dilemma, as we either have two good ones or nothing, and no one seems to know. And if Chad is hurt again, and if Clemens isn’t the real deal, everything we have written on all these posts is academic, as without a poised QB no teams goes to the playoffs. Et Tui?
-
seanmac, you really think Flacco will be gone by pick 36? I know he’s risen up draft boards, but was he even a third rounder before pre-draft workouts? I know Woodson has fallen, probably to the late second day, but there are still QBs like Brohm and Henne who could be taken before Flacco.
Anyways, I think this is all academic because I don’t necessarily see the Jets taking a QB on the first day.
-
As Bassett says, this will be interesting for us…because we have so many options. I don’t think there is any way we take a QB. Everybody dumps on Chad, but he (as well as Clemens) will benefit greatly from the new OL and improved run game and I think the FO will evaluate this before taking another step at this position. Getting a pass rush is top priority if we are to gain on NE, and I don’t think Pace is enough. That could mean Gholston. A trade down is very possible if the right guys are still available at 6, and we will listen to all offers. I bet we jump on one and stockpile picks.
-
Hall has been traded to the Raiders
-
I think the Jets have more of a pass-rush than we give them credit for. Yes Bryan Thomas underperformed last year but I still expect him to be a starter and he is a decent pass-rusher. Pace is a good pass-rusher, Harris had 5 and a 1/2 sacks last year. Ellis, if he does anything is a good pass-rusher at the DE position. Rhodes can blitz from the safety position as can Elam if he is the starter and opposing o-lines will have to deal with a 350 pound beast in the middle this year. I tend to think Gholston isn’t a necessity although I wouldn’t begrudge the Jets taking him if he’s the best player available at 6.
-
Best case scenario for the Jets is McFadden to fall to them and Dallas to over pay with draft picks
-
Ryan that was AWESOME. Thanx for the clip
billvv – I am all for Flacco in 2nd

I still think it could go this way:
1) Dolphins: Chris Long (most likely) or Matt Ryan (As a smokescreen knowing Tuna would probably rather pick up a QB off the scrap heap and resurrect his career).
2) Rams: Jake Long (How can they pass up a OT with an agine Orlando Pace?)
3) Falcons: Matt Ryan (unless the Dolphins take him or if they trade up to get their man). Let’s face it they need a new ambassador for this sorry franchise since the Michael Vick debacle.
4) Raiders: Darren McFadden (How can Al Davis pass up the most talked about, good (on field) or bad (off field) player in the draft?) Besides Howie’s boy will be gone by then. (unless they trade up and that puts Miami at #4 in which case they may take Gholston since Tuna missed out on the Calvin Pace sweepstakes.)
5) Chiefs: (most interesting of all since this is the true wild card. They could take McFadden if both Raiders and Dolphins pass. Or they could take Gholston or Sedrick Ellis as the most likely pick.
6) Jets: that leaves us with the choice of any CB/S, WR, or the remaining lot of Ellis, Dorsey or Gholston since I truly believe both Longs, Ryan, and McFadden certainly will be gone in the top 4 or 5.What do you think? Trade down (if possible) or reach with a CB like Rogers-Cromartie or WR like Limas Sweed? Or take the next logical choice of the above defensive players?
-
seanmac where do you have Flacco going? and is he your 2nd or 3rd QB picked? He might be there. ATL, G.B.,MIA and maybe CHI and T.B. could pick a QB in first 2 rounds.. ATL and MIA will definitely pick one each before we come up in 2nd.
-
There isn’t a WR worthy of the 6th pick, and I think it would be wise for the Jets to trade down with Dallas because the type of players they need (Sweed, Hardy, Talib, Groves, Albert) will be in the 20′s range. Overall, I think they would fit better than Gholston/McFadden.
-
Flacco is going in the first round. Miami and Atlanta are both going to pass on Matt Ryan because they want Joe Flacco at the top of the second, but they’ll likely have to trade up into the bottom end of the first to make sure that they get him. I expect that Atlanta’s recent trade just gave them the edge, as they have three second round picks to play with. The Jets just don’t have the firepower to move up the way Miami and Atlanta do. I think Flacco is probably the second quarterback off the board-third at worst-and I actually wouldn’t be shocked if he was the first quarterback taken (this assumes Matt Ryan drops out of the top ten, which I think is quite possible). That’s unlikely, but I don’t expect Flacco to be on the board after pick 26 or so. It actually makes Ryan a more attractive option at six, honestly.
The funny thing is that for all the beating the number six pick to death, I don’t really expect the Jets to have it come draft day. I’m expecting a small trade down, to 9 or 10 as Cincy or New Orleans moves up for Dorsey or Ellis, with another potential slide into the 14-15 territory. I don’t think the Dallas trade will happen, though.
-
Well with this ATL-OAK trade, I could see OAK giving 4th overall to DAL, wich would make up for loss of 2nd for Deangelo Hall.
-
Greenblood, you are giving OAK to much credit, they arent that smart, I hope.
-
i dont think we trade down in any case other than if we get a solid first rounder, a good, speedy wr, or cb, and possibly an added in 3rd rounder. We have too many options with that pick to be stupid with it. Get gholston, ellis, or mcfadden, be happy with it, an in the second round draft a remaining qb (woodson) just to get depth there in case of a kc meltdown and cp’s arm finally falling clean off whilst getting destroyed by seau and bruschi
-
seanmac..i wouldn’t mind sliding down a few spots and then taking ghloston, probably where he belongs, but one of our big issues is that NE picks right after us. This is the only reason I would stay in the #6 slot just to make sure we get who we want instead of them.
-
I DONT WANT ELLIS PLEASE FRONT OFFICE DONT BE THAT DUMB IF GHOLSTON ISNT THERE PLEASE TRADE DONT WANT DMC EITHER
-
I know and hope the Jets are keeping girl arm around just for a safety vaulve. please declare K.C the starter I cant live thru that again. Cut his punk ass and get somebody anybody to backup K.C IF worthless starts, free agency ,draft means zip zero!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TY LAW IS TRASH
-
I think the QB position is set for this year as KC, CP and Ratliff. There will be the requisite competition and we’ll see what they see. I think it fair and, with an offseason to prepare, all three should be in top shape for it. No excuses. QB can wait until next year. Some other positions can count on the depth of this years draft and I think WR is one of these. I think the CB position is shallower and might be the second pick. The big thing is that none of these drafted positions HAVE to play this year!
-
MIAMI is going to trade down with DALLAS.jerry jones has a hard on for MCFADDEN,and the TUNA needs more than ONE player to help the dolphins!we need to trade CHAD,COLES,D-ROB for even MORE draft picks!with our SOLID OFFSEASON moves we have a very GOOD foundation.NOW is when we add the DEPTH that will be the NEW NEW YORK J-E-T-S for YEARS to come!
-
GHOLSTON/QB/BIG, FAST, WIDE RECIEVER with HANDS/CB/OL…THATS our draft.
-
2 words for ya RASHARD MENDENHALL im a penn state fan so i watch a ton of the big 10 and he is the real deal. size, power, agility, a lot like darren mcfadden but i think with more potential. could develope into an elite back under thomas jones and behind tony richardson. plus we could get another WR (i think a desperate need for kc) in the trade down to him. He would cost less and that’ll allow us to go all out with our next picks, get a flacco or woodson
-
The consensus seems to be that Long, Long, Ellis, Dorsey, Gholston and McFadden are the top six picks on talent. While the FO seems to be setting the offense up to run a lot more than pass, I believe that McFadden will be gone by the time we pick and Gholston’s physical numbers *far* outweigh his football IQ.
As many have stated, it will be difficult to trade down and get value in return, so if it was up to me (newsflash: it isn’t), I would take the number one CB on the board if McFadden is gone. It’s probably a few picks too high on talent but why make a bad trade just to move down a few spots and select the same guy?

Dorsey is damaged goods. No way he goes that high. Although, I do believe with each passing moment that the Jets are very likely to take McFadden if he is there. I’m still hoping that the Jet’s take Gholston if instead. McFadden may have character issues. Imagine him turned loose in heart of the beast where everything goes and anything can be obtained – New York City? McFadden – please call Eliot Spitzer, now.
