Sunday Isn’t a Day of Rest

Two quick notes from Sunday afternoon as Tannenbaum apparently knows nothing about taking a break:
According to Cimini, the Jets have signed Bubba Franks to be Chris Baker’s backup. (Thanks to Greenblood for the head’s up.)
According to Rock, the Jets and Broncos continue to talk about D-Rob trade, which may get consummated on Monday.
More details to come.

I found Rock’s piece a little confusing. Swap 4th round picks? Wouldn’t the Jets have a higher 4th rounder than Denver based on W-L? So, in exchange for D-Rob, the Jets get a lower pick? And a possible 3rd rounder next year. But maybe not.
I knew circumstances made it a tough market for D-Rob but that’s possibly worse than simply cutting him.
I found/find the swapping of 4. rounders confusing to… but the Broncos actually have two 4. round picks -the105th AND the 116th (from the Redskins) overall.
If the deal means that we would get both their 4. rounders I’m all for it!
Don’t the jets have like three fourth rounders. I doubt it is our actual one we would be trading. We want to get him off the books, but actually paying someone to do it is a bit too far…eve with a conditional pick in ‘09.
They did have three, but had to give one back when the Cincy D-Rob trade fell through. The extra one they do have is from the Vilma trade. I think Rock was deliberately vague, but we know roughly what the market for Robertson is and so we can probably expect some sort of exchange of picks and a conditional pick. Personally, I don’t see much point in worrying about it until the actual details come out.
They also have an extra 4th rounder next year courtesy of Pete Kendall.
like the Franks signing. Cant really complain. Hes only coming in to be the back-up TE, and you know he can block. anything he gives you in the receiving game will be a bonus
an FA receiver with the drops would “justin”-ifiably cause a Jets fan to worry, but I like Bubba Franks, I think that Callahan wil make the 2nd TE a more important position.
Tannenbaum could get a great job after this season — Garbage Man!
I think Mikey T observes Shomer Shabbat on Saturdays! :)
harvlis, are you serious? why does everybody just bash the jets no matter what. first we dont do enough, then we do what we need to do, with the draft coming up with a lot of picks we can fill every need we have and get a luxery pick. Screw it that we spent too much. idc unless what i watch on sundays is battles over which team has too much money.
J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS
Mike T is doing an amzing job. whoever thinks otherwise is worthless.
Harvlis just wants to work with Mikey T.
efootball, I didn’t know that being a Jet fan meant agreeing with every move they make. Franks is done — turn him over. He has been injury plagued and unproductive for years. What are they signing these players on, their names? Is there a free agent that Tannenbaum won’t interview? Ty Law is done, as well. In the past two years, playing every game, he has single digit assists. If he signs Law, Tannenbaum needs to go. Last year he picked up a bunch of washed up Defensive Ends. If Woody doesn’t work out at right tackle, our O-Line will be worse than last year. How much did he pay Woody? A stupid amount. Calvin Pace had one good year –questionmark. Kris Jenkins moving to Nose, at this stage in his career – questionmark. Faneca is the only given, this offseason. Spending money is not a guarantee for winning – see the Washington Redskins.
efootball, you must learn not to give anyone a blank check. If these moves don’t work out, you will be calling for a new GM, like everyone else.
Dude. you are dumb. Anybody at right tackle is betetr than clement.
And that worthels free agent DE led the league in tackles for a d end.
harvlis. im not giving the guy a blank check, nor will i complain if the moves dont work out because hell, lets be honest, the moves can only help. here’s a guy who’s been working his ass off getting these need players signed, and as long as we have a good draft where we get at least a somewhat productive depth player with each of our picks(one thing we have actually done well) we will have a good season, and our veteran leadership will help guys like clemens and leon for the future. were a long way off a championship, but i see it coming soon. And for the whole being a jet fan pissy argument you retorted with, i agree. we have overspent, jenkins was possibly a reach, pace might not work, ty law would be completely ridiculous, and bubba franks is quite frankly the single worst decision i think weve made in a really long time(well, vilma) unless we can get hime for about 2-3 mil. We havent had a magnificent offseason, but its a start and a very good draft (good, speedy WR i think is the key, and an ol to develope under faneca and possibly next to mangold as well) will put us where we need to be for long runs in the future
Dude, you’re dumb. You don’t just put ANYBODY at RT. If you think our defensive line did a good job against the run — your stupid, as well.
i agree with efootball. we really cant pull a donald trump on him for pretty much doing so far what the fans wanted out of him. What did you want him to do, find the only cure for tom brady syndrome (some scientists believe its either michael strahan-justin tuck-osi umenyiora or mike ditka , the only person who chose the giants over the pats on the espn special.
so what you want him to do, theres no great rt’s on the market, we sure as hell dont have one, nor do we have the trade pieces to land one (barring coles, who we need, or a high draft pick
Your making stuff up now harvlis. i didnt say they were good against the run. i jsut said coleman led the league in tackles for a d lineman. and bubba franks will compete for the starting job. hes still only 29 and 3 time pro bowler. he clearly has the ability. a new year new team, maybe he gets healthy and produces like we need.and has fro woody come on he was excellent with the pats, hes about a triple upgrade over clement. and he was on detroit last year you cant count that for much.
listen i have no idea what they signed franks for but i thought he was signed to back up baker. i’ve watched sean ryan play (if you call it that) for us for two years and wondered how he was even in the league considering how many good quality te’s and back up tes are in the league and how poor his play was. Bubba is a major upgrade over ryan. Its not like he is going to be asked to be antonio gates just play within himself i also felt that he was asked to do too much in green bay when they werent very good. as for the other signings i might be one of the only people who actually like the signings. we payed alot for jenkins but we also resigned the backup on the cheap so that aslo helps poihashowed spurts of what it takes to play nose tackle. as for faneca 30 is the new 20 and he will have at least 1 possibly 2 more trips to hawaii and his knowledge of the game will help mangold and d brick which if you wanna say they overpaid for him then maybe you didnt watch last season how many different guys played the guard. As for pace this in my opinion is a crap shoot because he only play olb one year and showed promise but he seems like he LOOKS LIKE TARZAN AND PLAYS LIKE JANE!! BUT WE WONT KNOW UNTIL THE SEASON STARTS. As for the draft i am all about trading down if gholston is gona and dmc is there dont need him he is good but rbs are a dime a dozen when your o line is opening holes oh forgot woody yeh he was signed i actually think we overpaid for him because he was a magini bellicheck guy but it doesnt hog tie us draft day we can take a olineman in rounds 2 and on but i want to trade that 6 pick if dmc is there and maybe get another o lineman unless they think bender is the future
Bubba is a good pick up for a viable back up TE. He’s a solid blocker. You have to think about the headaches that a 2 TE set can cause with Franks and Baker. They could draft Baker’s repalcement this year and have Bubba mentor him. Remember Baker wants a new contract. It’s just one way to look at it.
Harvlis, I doubt the Jets will come out of this draft without a couple prospects on the o-line. If they are not convinced Bender can become an effective OT they will pick one up in the draft because they have little depth at the position. Whether you like the moves or not, the Jets improved themselves in four areas: run blocking, pass blocking, stopping the run and rushing the passer. All areas in which they struggled tremendously last year. Yes they spent a lot of money but a lot of it has the potential to come off the books in 2-3 years when the mass of draft picks they are accumulating in next year’s draft will become productive.
Ilan, I want all the moves to work like a charm. I am real excited for the draft. it is one of the deepest drafts that I can recall. Tons of talented Juniors came out this year. I just hate spending a fortune on lots of questionmarks. If Woody can’t play, if he’s too heavy or too old, we have a serious problem that most rookies won’t be able to help. Jenkins and Franks have seen there best days. Each of them has had three or four years of mediocrity in a row. I would rather see a rookie gain experience then watch an out of shape or over the hill player look bad. We can get a big tight end in the fourth round. We can get a huge RT in the second round. If you are going to pick up a free agent, get a player in his prime, not a reclamation project. Although, Tannenbaum is making moves, they need to be questioned.
