Laveranues Coles Informs Teammates of Intent

According to Hutch’s Star-Ledger report, Coles told his teammates he was going to be a no-show … fo’ sho’

[Coles] has recently told teammates that he’ll see them in July at training camp.

At this point, Coles is one of the league’s best #2s, but this coupled with the Jets obvious interest in large targets at the Combine and at Pro Days around the country gets me to thinking.  Are the Jets hedging their bets to see how the draft plays out, and then at that time, might be more willing to come back to the table?

My hope is that this situation can get made right, but more and more it’s harder to determine what “right” is going to be here …

  1. i can’t believe that would be their approach considering that most young receivers don’t have a big impact until their 3rd year.
and it’s not like overpaying to get guys to come in. coles is under contract and he hasn’t exactly been screwed.
i’m sure they’d still want to leave some wiggle room under the cap for the season. if there’s enough space left maybe they do something for coles, but have to figure rhodes would come first.
maybe laverneus should call d-rob. theres the extra cash.

  2. Coles has been very well-paid by the Jets. He’s on the wrong side of 30 and is a serious concussion away from retirement. I wouldn’t be upset if the Jets just cut LC, but whatever they do, they better do it soon. This looks like Pete Kendall all over again.

  3. trade him IMMEDIATELY!!

  4. This is why I’m losing interest in football. Its hard for me to feel bad about a guy who is guaranteed $11 million over the next two years. Poor baby, how is he supposed to survive on a meager $5.5 million a year?

  5. This is the same guy who left the Jets for $$$ in Washington, right?

    Just checking–

  6. from “Slapshot”

    “Trade him, right F@#@#@@ now!”

  7. He is one of the toughest receivers around. We have no one even close to his ability to replace him. Not even close. But he is small, 30 years old, and has had concussions in the past. It would be hard to see us paying him and extra (4 years 35 million??). I think that is what he is looking for. But he is a number two receiver, who is being treated like a number one on this team. We need both he and Cotchery to be successful. And it wouldn’t hurt if Chansi Stucky came back healthy this year to be the slot receiver. We need him and Justin Miller to come back and play well.

  8. When was the last time this guy had a big game, or broke a big play? I know what he is working with, but give me a break.

  9. I think guys who want to trade a player who has played well whenever he has played because he is and promises to act like an a–hole are lousy businessmen.

He either plays for us for two years or he doesn’t get paid. If he doesn’t get right, he is not even guaranteed the next two years. If he gets that concussion, no other team will pay him either.

I have no idea why everyone is so worried about a whiner. Let him whine.

I would take a second rounder for him. But who will offer one for a whining 30+ WR who missed games because of a concussion, coming off an injury and who wants more than two years at 11 mil.

Doing anything other than sticking it to him is dumb. The guarantee was generous. He doesn’t think so. Let him eat cake and whine to Cimini and his buds.

  10. I will take TJ Whoseyourmama over LC anyday.
I am tired of his crap. He needs to save the drama for his mama.

  11. The problem with whiners is on a team that gets worked so hard, and lost so much last year is that it becomes REAL easy to lose your team, like Coughlin almost did– you win 3 superbowls like Belicheck, you get away with it. But when your young and haven’t one, a captain bitching and moaning will lose you a locker room REAL fast.

  12. I did not want to go there, but I am a member of the Army Reserves(22 years). I think about these young soldiers who are risking their lives for less than $20,000 a year…While our Mr. Coles is doing what he enjoys for six million a year ($’s per Foxsports) and that is not enough for him. He needs to put his priorities in prospective. He might be getting thumped, but he not being shot at on a daily basis. Come to work and feel lucky that you have the priveledge to earn this big salary.

  13. Those of you saying f#*& him and that we have him under contract for two more years should not underestimate the impact he will have on other players on the team if he is unhappy. He has the respect of other players. I don’t particularly want to see him get a long term contract extension, but he is likely to become a cancer in the locker room if he doesn’t. This is not a good situation that is developing.

  14. Harlan, I agree with your business sense but that only makes sense if the team is winning. If they lose again, his whining will disrupt the team, big time. That is why they got rid of Kendall, even without having an adequate backup. I agree that LC should shut up[ and be happy with 11m, but I could see trading him (maybe draft day) if they can draft a good prospect and if Tangini judges that LC is becoming more trouble than he’s worth.

  15. TRADE HIM!!!!

  16. call detriot right now take coles and d.rob and send back roy williams and a 3rd.pick case close.

  17. What kind of example is Coles setting as a leader, a captain, a team player. Beefs taken to the press shows a lack of character. Players agree to terms at one point, then want to renegotiate in the middle. His contract was done over once upon his return, and probably irate over recent acquisitions. His position is really one of two on offense that hasn’t been addressed yet(QB the other) and should be glad he hasn’t had to look over his shoulder. It’s insane to boycott when this gives him opportunity to show unity and support. Clearly, he intends to be a disturbance. A captain, with guaranty millions and a contract. Didn’t he learn from Kendall the team comes first. His days with the Jets are few. I’d be surprised if he gets past preseason.

  18. He’s a fanny, who want to reup his contract every 2 years or so, he’s already had 2 big bonus’s and he wants his again, reality check u had ur worst eason since ur rookie year, and ur banged up all the time, and u bitch like a little girl, it’s amazing how fat u can change ur opion of a player

  19. As much as I like Coles, if he is going to be a distraction, he should be traded. So much for him acting like a Captain. Let’s see how happy he is in Green Bay. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Adios.

  20. Trade him now….if he can not get his a@@ into the workouts than move him. Good player but nothing more than a #2. There is not one of us on this blog who would not work for 1/20th of what he is getting. 4-12 and he wants more!!!! Gave us some good times now it is time to move on before camp opens.

  21. Coles can’t handle the fact that the current regime acts like a business.
