Who Will Be Marked Absent?
Today, the press will get to watch the veterans walk around and stretch, and the big question is who will be who’s in attendance and who won’t be there. Here’s three players that might cause a stir by their presence or lack thereof.
Dewayne Robertson — With his successor in place already, and the team embroiled in trade talks and also speaking publicly about moving him to End, it’s hard to imagine if Robertson will be there today. I’m sure the Jets want to get this deal done, and swept under the carpet as soon as possible.
Chad Pennington — The consummate pro, Chad has wanted out of town ever since he was benched in favor of Kellen Clemens last season. The Jets haven’t honored that request. It might be an uphil battle, but his fate is in his own hands while he’s with the Jets to see if he can win the starting job, and with a re-vamped O-Line, this year could be the QBs chance to shine.
Laveranues Coles — It appears that we’ve learned from Laveranues Coles, that money equals respect. Disgruntled that the team hasn’t honored his request to re-do his contract with two years remaining, expect him to be conspicuously absent at Hofstra today. It will be interesting to see if he’s voted captain again.

L. COLES is the one ###### over a new deal if i was the jets i will be on the phone with arizona talking about a boldin for coles deal, maybe trading each other headaches might just work?
F@$% all three to these guys. D-Rob is awful, I’ve never seen a worse DT against the run. Coles is a cry baby, the Jets have given him everything. Sure, he’s a good receiver, but its not like he’s only making $100,000. He’s more then well compensated for what he does. As for Chad, he’s great, a true team leader. But lets stop kidding ourselves, he won one game last year as the starter. Clemens didn’t look too good as the starter, but he did win 3 games as the starter. To me its obvious the Jets are better with Clemens.
C YA to all three. We are drafting a WR high the draft this year.
One of the problems of analyzing games for fans is that we rarely know the player’s responsibilities on each play — especially with a coach who shares nothing and a media which refuses to do its homework by actually knowing something or researching it.
In the alt.sports.football.pro.ny-jets newsgroup, we have our resident troll, MZ (Mark), a Pats fan who is often more fun to read than a few NG members. He was amazed at how little we understood NT play in a 3-4 and I started using my DVR to break down plays using his observations as a guide.
I found that a lot of the times I had been blaming DRobb, he had been doing two things:
1) taking on two blockers and being sealed from the play. One would have thought our DEs, being single teamed or our LB would then slide over to fill the hole. NOT! On many of these plays DRobb being sealed by two guys should have freed up a tackle, especially because the three players eliminated half the field from consideration. But our DE were easily controlled by the OTs and until Harris, our LB…
2) rushing up field on either side of the center threatening to break up the play, again eliminated half the field if he did not miss the tackle or over run the play. Yet, again, the DEs and the LB often failed to make plays.
The clue should have been how things improved when Vilma went down, how often our DE and OLB were replaced.
If you taped any games, rewatch the line play. DRobb was our best player on the DL by a mile.
Moreover, the one game he was not regularly double teamed, the Steelers game, he went to town.
Harlan
Can’t argue with that Harlan. D-Rob is not THAT bad.
The issue is his contract.
He is the highest paid DT in the league, and he isn’t THAT good either. I think that Jenkins will be better, but I don’t think D-Rob sucked either. I just think it is an upgrade to some degree, but more importantly much cheaper.
trade ALL THREE!
Anyone think there’s a chance that Drob would restructure his contract to stay with the Jets? He can’t think he’s going to be so well paid after seeing what’s being offered for him in these trade talks.
I agree that’s he’s being overly criticized and is not playing so bad, but the contract that Bradway gave him is way out of proportion to his skills.
Meant to add that if he did re-structure, he would add great depth and versatility to the Dline. Don’t forget that the jets actually ran a 4-3 look about 40% of the time last year.
the last THREE pieces to clean up of HERMS MESS!
We have very few keepers on this team, The NY Jets are /have been in a state of flux since 1969!
Harlan-
I agree D-Rob is probably criticized too harshly, he’s not as bad as many people make him out to be. But he’s just not that great, either. And he has never, nor will ever, come close to justifying his salary. No question the DE and LB play left something to be desired but the great D-Lineman are a constant threat to actually beat double teams.
Kris Jenkins, for all the knocks against him, many deserved, has at least shown the ability to bust up double teams and disrupt plays on his own when he’s motivated. The cynics say he won’t be able to do it playing true NT in a 3-4 but we won’t know till we see.
You say that most fans are ignorant of the intricacies of line play in a 3-4 but I’m confident Mangini isn’t. If he’s ready to give up on D-Rob anchoring the nose, so am I. Particularly at his price. If a trade doesn’t work and he’s willing to restructure his deal to play some DT in 4-3 fronts or situational End, I’ll be happy to have him.
In regards to Chad, he just doesn’t have the arm strength for the vertical game we so desperately need. He’s a good backup for the Jets. For Clemens, he should be better with a beefier O-line but not a savior. I am thinking how this can work for the Jets because either QB has it’s flaws…..and there is no options for trade. Or is there?
Any suggestions on a QB trade that would help us?
Trade or release Chad and draft Flaco…
The thing about trading for a new QB is the time it takes to learn the system and its nuances. These QBs aren’t going anywhere this year. It’s such a cliche about CP arm strength. It’s been years since the line kept anybody out of the backfield to even TEST his arm strength! I’m sure he’ll be in shape and we’ll FINALLY see whether or not there is any truth to that rumor. CK will also have had an off-season to prepare to lead the team, so I expect to see an improvement in him too. Should be a fair competition, in my view.
seriously, coles has to be kidding. I am all for these guys getting their $$…football contracts arent guaranteed etc….
but does he not remember chad restructuring so the jets could bring coles back?? the guy made a killing off his redskins deal…. then “begs” back to NY…. has his boy help out…
and now he wants a LONG TERM deal at his age after all the abuse his body has taken??
love the guys toughness, is SUPPOSED to be a leader….SO F$$@#$ ACT LIKE IT COLES!!!! or take a walk….
last time i checked u dont change games pal
Klecko 71, we do not have anyone who changes games.
Our QBs change games with pick 6s don’t forget that. Ha. I love this team.
Harlans right. D-Rob was consistently double teamed. Which is exactly what the NT is suppose to do. Problem is we hardly ever controlled the line.
D-rob can be a terror, back in a 4-3, but he constantly gets controlled and moved out of position. Thats where fat man comes in and just eats up space.
Give D-Rob some love. He’s done everything he’s asked too. and plays to the whistle. Not to mention the pain playing with those knees. Monday mornings must suck.
I will not miss the salary though and I wish him luck.
Chad…oh Chad. Relegate him to Back up KC. Lets see what this kids got and move on. Its been 3 years, $h!* or get off the pot. we all know Chad’s NOT the future.
Coles…you greedy sun of bi’ach. What 11 Mills not enough for you? You deserve a long term contract over the 2 years you have left? You aging, over rated, wheres my bonus, crybaby? I hope they trade your @$$ on draft day for a team player.
[...] absence will cause much of a stir but there’s one other player who could make waves. The Jets Blog reminds us that Chad Pennington would like to be playing somewhere else. There’s said to be [...]
Parking Expert, the short answer is it is very unlikely. First, I am sure Tangini already tried to restructure his deal before trading him for low mid round picks. Second, he has to be nuts to resign with us now with Jenkins forcing him to learn a new position.
Even if we cut him too late to get a big deal this year, he is young enough to sign his big deal next year as a FA.
Our choice is to cut him (bad move says I), trade him with the chance for a third rounder (?) or keep him?
Tangini have enough film to know what he can do at DE.
H
Coles is quickly becoming this year’s kendall cancer. I wonder if he is smart. If the JETS give him a new 4 or 5 year deal with $11 million in guarantees or guarantee the remaining two years at $11 million, what is the difference. So as much as I like coles, I would trade him for another WR and draft WR manningham in round two.
I think that if the JETS thought DRob could be an impact DE, they would already reworked his contract. So a trade is the best option.
As to CP, I really like chad, but he needs to be somewhere where he has a chance to start. Does Herm want him? And what could we get for him?
what you talkin bout willis?
Its unfortunate that Drob is one of the players blamed for everything that is wrong with this team. If fans should be mad at anyone, it should be Bradway and the FO who allowed Washington to rip us off and pillage this team and then in an effort to look save face, grab Drob as the 4th pick. How is he supposed to live up to a 4th pick status, especially in NY when he should never have been taken this high? I would welcome having him back under a restructured deal to play end for this team and occasionally NT.
“If [Mangini]’s ready to give up on D-Rob anchoring the nose, so am I”
I’m not convinced he is, but – knowing that he was due an amount of money far higher than his value to the team – the Jets wisely explored other options and picked up Jenkins. If Robertson *was* willing to restructure to a reasonable amount, I think Mangini would happily add him to the plans. I don’t expect this to happen though.
I’ve been saying for two years that Robertson was doing a decent job, so I am pleased to see that some other people share that view.
Yes, DRob was consistently doubled teamed, but he was also blown back 5 yards on every run play. The NT in a 3-4 is supposed to hold the line of scrimmage, while taking on two blockers which should free up others to make the paly.
exactly J…..thats why tearing up the last 2 years of a contract that jerk signed would be a bad move. he has been rewarded with the first contract he signed when we drafted him…..”gave a criminal a chance” =) he got PAID by the skins who gave him 5 years / 35 million…with 13 million guaranteed!!! which was widely criticized as dan snyder being a dope….
from an article about the signing in a washington paper:
FEW PEOPLE CAN DISCUSS WASHington Redskins wide receiver Laveranues Coles without mentioning his fat contract. Owner Dan Snyder shocked the NFL in the offseason–not to mention Coles himself–when he offered the wideout a free-agent deal worth $35 million over five years, including a whopping $13 million signing bonus.
The signing bonus was one of the largest payments ever bestowed upon an NFL player. The Redskins gave Coles a better contract than he was asking for, and New York Jets general manager Terry Bradway didn’t seriously consider matching the offer sheet to keep Coles because he felt it was just too much money.
….and now the guy is 30…will be 31 in december….is going into his 9th season….been absolutely beat up beyond belief…..and he wants a new deal?? i dont know what the last 2 years of his contract are gonna pay….but its obvious he wants one more deal from us…one more signing bonus…..
again, cant fault guys..especially in this sport…from trying to get it….but he is a very good #2 guy…..
very very replaceable…….so peace out….
I’m tired of his tirades. What wud be the cap impact of cutting him? Do we get any compenstory pick by cutting him? With his concussion issues and injuries, I dont think he’s gonna do us any good. And we have other WR’s(smith/chansi) waiting to be 3rd or 2nd WR’s. Of course wour team was much better with him in the lineup than him being out. But this is the kind of high priced distraction we dont need with all the hope around the new acquisitions.
ramble – no he wasn’t.
jet4lif – cutting Coles does not give rise to a cap hit and would save $11m over the next two years. We would not get any compensatory pick.
96debacle is right on. The only thing I would add is we also should draft a QB in rounds 2-4…every damn year, until we find a top ten guy.
Bent,
You must have been watching something different than I was, because I have seen 99% of the games sinse he was drafted, and he routinely gets blown off the ball. The FO is not looking to get rid of him because he is a good palyer, quite the opposite. He Sucks!
Robertson is number 63, right?
I am pretty sure I have not seen that guy “blown back 5 yards on every run play”.
If you saw it differently then we’ll just have to not agree. I doubt either of us will care too much in a year’s time.
Probably by the start of training camp.
if mangini has been making all these moves for any reason, it would be that he wants a fresh beginning, build on character and work from there. So umm… screw these guys. What bigger distraction could you possibly have as k.c than your mentor not showing up? Shame on you chad, i could look up to you even with all of the crappy performances cause at least the team seemed to care for you. You need to be in that camp because you know you deserved to get the boot as starter, clemens is the better man and the future of the program. You may feel bad about your bad fortune, hell we all do. but youre not helping yourself by most likely landing up as a third string qb in TB or possibly a second stringer in Miami. Point is… YOU SUCK. what team wants a qb who cant chuck a wobbly ball 40 yards accurately and is quite frankly one hit from bruschi away from needing a prosthetic arm. so quit the bi*chin and play where some fans still respect you. jack***
