Nothing’s official, and I have a post on the topic that I’ve been holding in reserve for a long time, but are you ready to pay for the privelege to pay for season tickets to watch your favorite team? It could be right around the corner.
Now, for the first time, the selling of personal seat licenses is a real possibility in the New York area. Jets and Giants executives are considering using them at the $1.6 billion stadium they are building in New Jersey, which is scheduled to open in 2010. Although any decisions are months away and team officials are reluctant to discuss details publicly, sports business analysts and others around the N.F.L. said they expected to see the teams sell licenses.
In brief, the teams have a large chunk of “financing” that hasn’t explained where it’s coming from … the cynic in me leads me to believe it’s going to be your pockets.
One way or another you are going to pay for it, if it’s not in PSLs, it’s going to be in raised ticket prices … this for a stadium that is being built, right next to a stadium that is perfectly functioning, but will be demolished shortly.

I have absolutely zero doubt that PSL’s are coming. The question’s more about cost than anything else. Expect the number to be a record though – this is New York. Take a look at what Chicago seat licenses auction for.
Personally, I’m already resigned to the cost – still on the season ticket waiting list so this may be the only way that I can get decent seats.
-
Don’t complain about this, all you have to do is stay home and watch on TV. What you will be paying for this PSL you can get a great large screen TV in high deff.
-
I guess the choice comes down to wether or not the Jets will look better losing in person (at high$) or on TV (Hi-Def)…Although if they decide to change the uni’s from that god-awful green/white bird poo colors..I sorta liked the throw back jerseys (they lost in both..but they looked better)….I think Hi-Def would be the way to go…so when Pennington throws his whiffle ball down field (max 9 1/2 yards) you could actually see the red faces on the opposing teams bench..as the players and coaches are bent over with laughter trying to catch their breath…God I love the Jets.
-
I’ve had tickets for the last 5 years now and the atmosphere and tailgating cannot be replicated at home.
-
I’ve been on the wait list for about ten years. I got a letter yesterday telling me they were refunding me $200 (Fees I had paid to be on the list. No idea if the program is only four years old) My wife said cool, and I said not cool. They are paving the way to charge you $500min a seat to get in, probably $599.99. We are in NY…ur, …forget it.
-
and I think the old stadium is just fine. Nuts.
-
Woody Johnson’s Park Avenue friends will account for the seats vacated by current fans. Like Woody, they won’t know much about football.
-
try a couple thousand for the so called priviledge
-
Couple thousand per seat? Great. Guess I’ll have to buy them and sell high. Actually, guess I ain’t buying!
-
me neither i agree w/ j. styne. ill stick to scalping 1 or 2 games a season
-
looks like this stadium will turn into yankees stadium during the playoffs….
a whole bunch of corporate rich people going to the games just cuz they can and not caring….
i remember wen i went to the jets/titans mondays nite football game a few years back and i was in one of the luxury boxes (friends family member got us tickets) and me and him were the only ones watching the game…there were a bunch of older men and their wives not even watching the games but sitting and chatting and drinking like the game wasnt even on…
it drove me crazy….i would kill for season tickets…i am a college kid and can barely afford buyin tickets off people for a few games on stub hub
so there is my rant
-
no offense to people who can afford it and who really do care….
but i am sure u guys kno the people i am talking about
-
Yea- unfortunately it will put true fans out of the stadium, I’ve had my tickets since 1988- it’s a shame, I would love to pass them on to my 7 yr old son.
-
Anything over $500 per seat and I will watch on TV. I will bet you the only reason Woody opened his pocketbook this year is to put at least an 8-8 team on the field so he can charge PSLs.
I am not interested in paying Woody anything for a new stadium the fans didn’t need.
-
Look, there’s no reason to worry that the sky is falling, yet. I would expect that they will soak the corporations that buy luxury boxes and club seats, first. Also, the Jets and Giants will require PSLs from fans because the waiting list for season tickets for both teams are, at least, 20,000 names long. Also, there is a bright side, PSLs are an investment and scalping tickets is no longer illegal in NY. So, if I had 6 tix, I’d get my buddies together, buy the seats, flip 2 and probably pay for the other 4. Sure, you may have to sell to some obnoxious hedge fund millionaire, but would you care?
-
Man living in NY is getting hard. The public transit just went up, the tolls went up, the electric and gas company rates are going up now my Jets and going to take a bite out of me also.
-
why wouldn’t those on wait list just buy season ticket rights on eBay, so you don’t have to wait? sure, you pay a pretty penny for them, but it’s not so terrible in many cases.
-
Well, I do buy my tickets on Ebay. I’d just prefer to have my own, assuming I can get good seats. Also, i tend to go with my brother and we can’t carpool, so the current parking situation makes tailgating impossible. In the end, i only go to 2-3 games where I can find good seats.
-
A new stadium that fans don’t need? Come on. I love how fickle Jets fans are. Half the time we’re complaining about having to play in GIANTS stadium, and now we don’t want to pay a cent more for tickets in a stadium that is going to be incredible. If you think that the Meadowlands is a suitible football venue, well try going to Lincoln Financial or some other recently built stadium and watching a game. There’s something to be said about the experience, and its worth it. If you can’t afford it, it sucks (I cant afford PSLs), but its called delayed gratification, and you’ll have to do what i do and buy a couple games a year on ebay then take the bus.
Plus, PSLs are not the end of the world. The market will dictate the price of the seats, and people are never going to pay, say, Eagles tickets prices ($300/upper levels) for Jets games, at least not till…they’re worth it!
-
for me, this is a moral issue. i’m sick of all the whiny athletes making too much money. they are overpaid, period. time for the fans to take a stand. don’t pay for a PSL. i’ve had season tickets for 30 years and as much as i love going to the games, i’m drawing a line in the sand. someone has to.
-
jeff i, you and the five others who won’t pay will not make the least bit of difference to Johnson because for every one of you, there are 30 others who will pay the PSL, which is why the teams do it. They’re really going to have to consider PSLs as an option anyway because in this economy, I can’t see companies paying millions to name the stadium, even with the exposure the Jets and Giants would bring. The price would be too steep, so who gets screwed again? That’s right, the fans do.
-
Question- does anyone know how PSLs would work with two teams? From what I understand is that you own the seat for any venue including concerts and such, how would it work with two owners (Jets fan and Giants Fan) for a seat and a concert comes to town for one night? or is the stadium going to be used soley for football? which I doubt the latter.
-
Hey Drose,
What were you drinking last night? Are you back in the saddle?
-
Question? Is this a one time fee, or every year? I have been on the wait list for over 10 years. I have gone from #10,500 to 493. So now after all these years when I am finally getting there, I may not be able to afford this? THat sucks. CAn someone tell me if this is a one time deal, or every year?
-
one time deal

Jager bombs, it’s the sugar in the redbull that killed me.
-
you should try the sugar free same effect

My father has had season tickets since the Jets were the Titans (close to 50 years). We have 10 season tickets and I go with my siblings and my cousins. I am completely disgusted with the inevitable institution of the PSL’s. It is not fair to any fans. Dont we pay enough to go to the games as it is?
I agree that there is nothing wrong with the stadium. I dont go to a football game for an “experience”. I go to watch a football game. You want an experience, go down to see the Atlanta Braves or the Baltimore Orioles. These teams dont even sell out playoff games. They provide you with an “experience” because they dont have enough real fans.
I have never cared about playing in Giants stadium and I never will. I only care about watching the JETS from my seats in section 115.
-
Does this mean we would have the powere to sell these seats to another party?
-
Guys wake up according to a NY Post article a while back and what has already been charged, the price is going to be more like $5,000 per seat not $500.
Also to top it all off businesses can probably write them off.
We should really get after the politicians. Right now tickets can be written off at 50% of face value. So most Jets tickets can get a $55 write off if bought by a corporation.
If every ticket was bought by a corporation and the corporation had a 33% tax bracket it amounts to almost a 2 million dollar subsidy from the federal government per game.
While their are not that many, I bet you are looking at minimum 10,000 are business tickets.
10K * $55 *.33 = $181,500 the fed is paying per game to drive us little guys out of taking our families to a game.
Multiply that by 10 games at home. 1.8 million now by how many teams, by how many sports…….
Not only sports, but concerts and everything.
This is hundreds of millions a year maybe even billions a year.
Take away the deductions. We are subsidizing driving ourselves out of being able to take our families to a game.
If businesses want the tickets, then pay and get no deduction.

Search on ebay for personal seat licenses
You will see what they are being sold for.
Steelers upper deck 2 seats 14,000
They are in Oakland, tennesee, pittsburgand many more.
-
if any waitlister wants 4 ticks for the upcoming season, I am willing to sell. The seats are together in the upper deck off of one of the end zones. All I’m looking for is face value. Conact me thru this board.

Jim,
Thanks for adding some reality to the numbers here. People are complaining about $500? The real amount will be at least $5000 for 2nd level and lower level may be $10,000 per seat.
There is NO WAY the number will be low. The Jets and Giants will have NO PROBLEM giving you a high price and will justify it by the fact that you can always get your money back on the secondary market.
This is 2008 folk, get into the real world. Stubhub, EBAY and all the other market force are in play which will make PSLs the way every team goes. If you cant afford it I feel for you, but you can always buy individual games on EBAY and stubhub.
As for me, I am looking at shelling out for 4 seats after having been on the season ticketholder list for almost 10 years and still 6000 away. If it means I have to shell out $ to get there, so be it.

I’ve had tix season tix since 78. Woody can pound sand up his 5 hole, I’m about to become a Packer fan, they are owned by the fans, not some rich boy with daddy’s money to play with

The Jets and Giants are setting us all up. The Giants have announced PSL’s, easy call – they just won the Super Bowl. The Jets are waiting as they ‘survey’ their fans (who votes FOR PSL’s by the way?). What will happen is: the two teams will get together, figure out how much the market will bear, and announce the PSL’s at a relatively LOW amount (since there are 2 teams using the new stadium). against what the Giants initially gave as the range. The teams come off as good guys that are trying their best to keep seats affordable, while still getting $$$ through PSL’s. The Jets and Giants are setting us up, my friends, bigtime.

i for one don’t have the money to shell out for PSL’s. Absurd! if we win a superbowl maybe, but hell no!
PS. I am hungover
