Buzz: Coles Deal to be Finalized Tomorrow?

by Bassett on March 27th, 2008 at 8:08 am

According to the Daily News, Laveranues Coles will have his new contract by tomorrow.

My criteria for considering this a successful renegotiation:

1) It costs the Jets less than the money the Jets were on the hook for this year — so say a minimum salary and an amortized signing bonus under $5 million to create more space right now to get some more JAGs or re-sign players under contract.
2) Other than an up front signing bonus, the “guarantees” can be things easily sidestepped should the team not want him in later years of the deal — roster bonuses, playing incentives.

    what does JAG mean?

  2. I agree, if they can bring back a team leader who commands a lot of respect in the locker room, and save some cap space in the process, it’s a successful deal. Coming off last season’s Kendall fiasco, this should give other players some confidence in the FO, i.e. they made some promises to LC and he’s back so they followed through on those promises.

Mike – JAG, Just A Guy, made famous by Parcells to describe roster filler, he’s nothing special, he’s just a guy…

I agree, as much as I hated Coles stance, and his continous need to clamor for money and respect even though he has been shown plenty of both over the years by the Jets, I am all for bringing him back if it makes sense for the team, save some short term cap space and don’t sacrifice too much future space with guarunteed money.

We should all be very happy. Coles maybe not as good as he used to be but hes still a good receiever and a warrior on the field. Hes the guy I want other players to feed off of. He demonstrates what it means to play with heart. Any Jet fan should know this and respect LC and know that he is a beast on the field and I can only hope that our other players can learn his iintensity.

All good, i just wonder how long it is until he starts to bitch about something else. The team is a lot stronger with him, but i’ve lost all respect for the guy, he did it with the redskins as well after every 2 years he demands a new contract with more up front money, thats why they traded him back 2 us !!

fattyboomboom, are you serious?(i mean the name, not your argument) i agree completely. However, were not gonna pay top dollar for the guy i think he realized were not gonna fold (though i wouldnt put it past the FO to give him fitzgerald-type money), so if hes staying at least theres some good news. He’ll get what he deserves, we’ll draft youth at wr so when we can finally get rid of the ***hole, we wont be left with one middle tier option for clemens, we’ll probably be left with one and a bunch of guys we drafted rather than good players
