Breaking News: Coles Extended

by Bent on March 28th, 2008 at 8:48 am

The NY Post breaks the story that Laveranues Coles has received a contract extension.

Financials are not known, but they are believed to have added 2 to 3 years to his deal so that he can finish his career with the Jets. If the Jets are smart, they will have created some extra cap space this season and also included an “eject button” after the first couple of years.

Phew, glad that the dark cloud that could have been looming over hempstead come the end of July has passed …

  2. avatar klecko71 says:

sorry mr bassett….hate to take a slight shot at the man responsible for this great site….

but F the black cloud…especially if this deal ends up being waaaaay to generous. I respect coles, TREMENDOUSLY, he is a leader… on the field and in the lockerroom anyway…. but he is gonna be 31… and is one chad flutter ball (if he starts) from being a halftime ceremony next year.

i am glad he is here…but he is an ass for pulling this stunt, especially after we spent alot of $$ on key cogs to make this team better. even guaranteeing the 11 mil would be absurd.

christ the guy got 13 mil upfront from the skins 3 years ago when he was significantly more desireable and talented.

  3. it’s the post–take it w/ a grain of salt

The black cloud won’t lift until we’ve seen the numbers. It would be great if it was 4 years, 16m with 12m guaranteed, but if it’s five years, 38m with 22m guaranteed, it will be tough to swallow. Presumably it will be somewhere in between. Hopefully closer to the low end.

And if when the black cloud does lift, there’s a polar bear behind it, I’m going to freak out.

“and is one chad flutter ball (if he starts) from being a halftime ceremony next year”

    LOL

Seriously, the Jets had an excellent free agency this season. It would be a shame if all of those good feelings were marred by a contract dispute with Coles. I think the Jets made the right move here (let’s see what the numbers are before we pass final judgment though).

  6. avatar cuff98 says:

Imagine an offense with coles, cotchery, hardy??…mcfadden??…a good quaterback and strong OL?

good move here. As long as we didn’t throw money at him like we threw woody.

wishful thinking here but amazing to imagine

  7. The only Jets beat guy I trust less than cimini is cannizario. Till we get some hard facts, this doesn’t tell us much. If this comes to pass and saves a little cap space, then it’s a good move. Now they gotta extend Rhodes.

  8. avatar Johnny Styne says:

If Pennington is the starter, then this will be Coles’ last year anyway. Concussions end careers.

  9. avatar Najy says:

Congratulations to Coles. He definetely deserved the extension. I think he has Chad to thank for all of his injuries this year. I cant even count how many times he has hung himself in the air to make catches for his qb who left him to hang and take a beating and never said a word about.

He asked for more money which, I think he deserves. Never complained about the Qb situation and I think that says a lot.

  10. avatar RK says:

Yes Rhodes is must too. Maybe he was the one that complained. I doubt that though. Now will Coles try to get any dissenters in line because he had his bread buttered and doesn’t care about the rest? Although I wanted Kendall to remain it would be impossible to deal with those two in the same locker room.

    Kevin,

When did u become an Eli Manning fan? Week 15 perhaps? Did u really have confidence that Eli was a Super Bowl QB? I still don’t think he is yet. Here is why they won – Line play!!! I agree though that the Giants have a sick pass rush and good O-Line play. However, this was a team who almost didn’t make the playoffs towards the end of the season. Also, they have holes on their team and did not fill any of those holes.

Jets will be first-tier this season – I’m pretty sure of that.

  12. avatar Frank says:

And by the way, your 80 yr old coach was 2 loses away from going out the door……remember that one

  13. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Hey Kev What kind of a loser has to go to a blog and be a jerk? Your team won the super bowl go get a life and let us waste ours talking about our team.

  14. avatar Najy says:

I cant wait until the Giants team completely falls apart again next season. They are gona lose a few games, everyone is gona want elie out the door and coughlin is gona go back to being a nobody. Strahan will retire because all he does is talk **** and he is the worst team mate to have on a losing team. And wait until tiki barber gets his mouth running about the Giants.

  15. avatar Frank says:

I forgot, we don’t play in the NFC…….maybe your right.

I don’t expect a 13-3 season because that is unrealistic. I could see 9-7, 10-6, 11-5 type of season if all goes well

  16. avatar JustAGreenGuy says:

Why would I cry? I just think your a fat loser who can’t find his crotch without a microscope. You’re a joke.

  17. avatar Johnny Styne says:

Wellington Mara is no Woody Johnson.

  18. avatar Frank says:

Remember, our “car-washing” coach had our team in the playoffs in his first year as coach!

Your telling me Eli Manning improved his game during the playoffs? He played the same way he played the whole season. It nice when u have 7 seconds to throw a football instead of 2-3 seconds.

The Giants should continue playing teams like San Fran, Chicago and St. Louis – Wow, what a tough conference they play in

  19. avatar Frank says:

Win SuperBowls? Your last SuperBowl win was 17 years ago buddy

  20. avatar Frank says:

Go talk on the Giant blogs………..wait a second, you can because the only thing they have done this season is raise ticket prices.

  21. avatar Frank says:

You don’t even have a Super Bowl ring dude. Unless your name is Kevin Boss, u don’t even play for the Giants buddy. I don’t become a Giant fan because I am not a front runner and I stand by my team through the good and bad times.

  22. avatar George says:

The sun’s got to shine on a dog’s ass someday. I’ll be astounded if the Giants finish better than 9-7 next year.

By the way, I love these new “entitled” Giants fans, who seemingly came out of nowhere right when Plax caught that SB touchdown.

  23. avatar Najy says:

It goes to show what kind of fans they are…

  24. avatar Joe says:

Gotta love a guy that goes on another teams blog and starts talking. Guarenteed Kevin Velez was like every other Giants fan(if he even was one b4 they started winning) I know and wanted Eli and Tom C fired. Remember all those newspaper headlines. Remember the boos in the stadium. Even the Giants players called out the fans. Congrats you won the superbowl. But remember all those times you wanted to kill Eli. Other the times youstop watching because you couldn’t take it anymore. The G-Men took a beating this offseason and once they start losing again it’ll go back to the way it always is: Everyone talking about the QB and the Coach. All the front-runners will leave. The boos will return to the stadium. The second Eli contract is up he’ll leave alone with everyone else who cant stand the fact that one year removed from a superbowl and the fans are already booing them. I mean could you blame them. I wouldn’t want to play for the G-Men because 90% of their fans are front-runners who only show up when times are good and the second things turn bad throw the whole team under the bus in a heartbeat. I beat Eli and the G-Men won that Superbowl just to spite all those front-runners that call themselves fans(Kevin V). Real fans are there for every game win or lose. I’ve been to every game for the past 4 years. I havent skipped one no matter the Jets record. I’m a true fan unlike your sorry butt.

  25. avatar Steve says:

Giant fans hated Eli Manning for his entire career until week 17, then he became a god. Then in true Giant fan form one retard who is probably on his high school spring break goes into another teams blog site and starts running off his mouth like he plays for the Giants. Reality check time….you don’t, you are not a New York Giant player, this does not make you a good fan it makes you a faggot, you’re not an athlete, you are probably one of those kids who could not even cut it in pop warner, and most of all talking like this on a blog does not make you a tough guy …. now for why Jets fans would have hope of being a good team next year. Here’s why we lost 7 games last year by 7 points or less …. By adding a great run blocking lineman (Faneca) and another lineman (Woody) who is not stellar but still alot better than what we had we can use the running game to close out games which we could not do last year. Defensively we have one of the best young linebackers in the league and one of the best young corners in the league to build around. We finally went out and got the big body we need at NT for the 3-4. We have a good draft position and could do a number of things to improve the team in the first two rounds. so yes it is acceptable for a Jets fan to think that with these improvements they could win these games that got away from them ….4 wins plus 7 wins equals 11 wins

  26. avatar Joe says:

Steve I agree completely. Having been their to watch those games I know how close we were to winning them.
    10-6 next year

  27. avatar Johnny Styne says:

The Giants fans were very quiet when we were leading them in the 3rd quarter last year. Yes, they got loud when they intercepted Chad in the 4th quarter and in overtime both for touchdowns, BUT FOR 3 QUARTERS WE KICKED THEIR ASS!!

  28. avatar Steve says:

Joe I agree with 10 wins….Johnny I also agree with you and where was Osi then I think he got shut out that game…take away his one huge game against a practice squad left tackle the eagles had playing (Winston Justice) and he had like 6 sacks last year

  29. avatar Bent says:

It bears mentioning that had we pursued the QB/LT draft strategy in 2006 instead of the LT/QB strategy that landed us Brick and KC, we would have been more likely to have ended up with Justice than McNeil if we were picking for value.

    Don’t feed the troll…
