Someone’s got it wrong on the Coles deal. The Post has reported that the deal was extended (emphasis mine).
Laveranues Coles Laveranues Coles , who entered this offseason with two remaining years on his contract worth $11 million but wanted an extension to ensure he’d finish his career as a Jet, yesterday agreed to that extension. Terms of the deal were not immediately available, but it’s believed Coles had either two or three years added to his contract.
While ESPN.com‘s Pat Yaskinas has reported something quite different (emphasis mine).
The New York Jets have guaranteed the $11 million remaining on the final two years of receiver Laveranues Coles’ contract, a league source said Friday. Coles had been seeking a contract extension, but guaranteeing the remaining two years is an apparent compromise between the team and the receiver. Coles had been critical of the Jets earlier in the offseason for spending money on players from outside and not taking care of players already on the team.
The two year guarantee is a compromise? Really? I thought that was the bone of contention in the first place. So … either the deal was extended or not …

I TOLD YOU THE POST SUCKS!

Also, he is still only 30 yrs old……I think his idea is to have 2 more good-great seasons with the Jets, with guaranteed money. Then, hit the FA market at about age 32 for one more big contract before calling it quits. Look at what javon walker just got from the Raiders. Is Javon Walker better than LC?

Isn’t guaranteed money preferable to years, anyway? Having years tacked on without guarantees only tilts the power towards the team.
Either Coles woke up and realized he wouldn’t do better anywhere else or the team threw a few performance incentives on top of its already generous offer to keep him happy. (quiet)

This is just a lead-up to a trade for Santana Moss.

If Coles is only signed for 2 more years, won’t he just demand an extension before the start of next season? I think it’s smarter to lock him up for a few years when he’s 30 than when he’s 31.

My guess is that these reports are incomplete and the real offer is three fold:
As offered originally, two years are guaranteed so if he gets hurt this year he gets the full 11 mil.
Two or three years are added but not guaranteed. The main benefit is that he has to be paid this new money or gets to be a FA (i.e., the amount if he stays is guaranteed). Both sides can renegotiate but this puts Coles in the situation DRobb is in now — a high contract.
He gets to shop his services next year (sign and trade). So if the market for his services is what his agent thinks, he can partake risk free.
Otherwise, signing now makes no sense at all because he already turned this down and the reporters were still backing him (although some fans got it, there were still some complaining about Tangini so there was no need to panic).

I am sure that they signed him to a more cap friendly 5 year deal with like 12 guaranteed and created more room under the cap to sign our draft picks. I still think that we should trade our first round pick for Lito Sheppard.

you want to trade the 6th overall pick for lito sheppard? Where do you get your weed?

PFT backs ESPN’s version:
-
LC is a better wr than Moss (santana) hands down. You can talk about potential and on their best day all you want but one is always on the field making highlight catches and taking huge hits left and right being productive and one is held out with quad and hamstring injuries. We have the most clutch tandem in the league!
-
I forgot… Moss and Abraham have the same amount of heart!
-
Draft a legitimate 3rd wide receiver (preferably a burner) in this years draft and we will be in good shape!!

I think espn got it wrong….wasn’t the 11 million already guranteed?
