Gary Myers of the Daily News caught up with Woody Johnson at the owners meetings in Florida over the weekend.
… with lots of speculation around the NFL that Tannenbaum and Mangini must win now to keep their jobs after going 4-12 last year, owner Woody Johnson attempted to put an end to that talk.
No matter what happens this season, neither Mangini nor Tannenbaum will be fired, Johnson said. He told The News that Tannenbaum and Mangini “absolutely” will be back in 2009 regardless of the Jets’ record this season. “I really think it takes time to build,” Johnson said. “You can’t do it in one season.”
Consistently good teams take time to build in our opinion, so patience is definitely a virtue. The Jets had money to spend, and they spent a lot of it upgrading key positions at which they had to get better to be relevant in the next few years. In some cases, it was buying time while they develop other players.
Tannenbaum and Mangini’s fingerprints are pretty much all over this team now, albeit with a few smudges left from the former regime like Dewayne Robertson, still Woody is giving his guys some room to build this team which is exactly what they need.

Woody. It’s been 40 years.

I hope it’s true because I like what these guys are trying to do. We have always been bad a least we have stand up players now who aren’t an embarassment off the field too.

come on guys…if woody gave the idiots 5 years why wouldn’t he give tangini the same amount of time to rebuild a team the 2 idiots destroyed…just my thoughts…

in my opinion, we could have an extremely solid, successful next year(at least compared to last year. I looked at the final standings, and our point differential was -89. Now dont get me wrong, that is horrible. However, teams like the broncos, lions, and panthers, all 7-9 teams, had either a higher point differential (broncos had -89) or slightly lower (lions had -80). This may point to the thought that there were some blowouts here, but i think it more points to the fact that while we lost 12 games, we lost them by a little more than a touchdown average, so we were in very close games. Remember also how we lost to the pats by 24 and the cowboys by 31 on thanksgiving. What i think this means is that we are certainly growing, and while we will lose to powerhouses, not only will we start winning more games against better teams with new, better players, those close games we were in will start falling for us with new veteran leadership. Also, dont look over the fact that miscues in the clutch(like mc careins dropping the ball in the end zone with a minute left) cost us about 3 games. We will be good in the future, as long as clemens excels with the new line and we build depth at necessary positions. P”layers will grow under veterans, and i expect 6-8 wins this year, no less than 7 in 2009, and we will have a 10 win season at latest by 2011

i think we’ll win more than 6-8 games this year…most of our offensive woes were from the o-line and yes dropped passes by not only mcdrops but also the 1 by cotchery agaisnt wash. and im sure b.smith had a few here and there…i think our run game will be alot better than last year aswell as our passing game now that there will be more than 2 seconds to find an open reciever who will have time to get open…and there will be more holes to run through…this will be a fact when the season starts…and with a better defense i feel we should win 9-10 games this year…you can argue your points to why we wont win this many games in 08 but this is how i feel and these are…just my thoughts…

I don’t agree with Woody. If all the moves that Tangini have made don’t work out – See Ya! Woody is the same man who has mired the New York Jets in New Jersey, enough said. If you go by his formula, the Knicks keep Isaiah Thomas. Question Authority! Many of the moves that Tangini have made are questionable. If we are not competitive this year – Next!

Sure Woody we believe you. Perhaps Woody had the blood drain from his big head to his slightly smaller one …OK much smaller one. This is what happens when businessmen inherit their money rather then earn it.
If the Jets miss the playoffs in 08 say so long to Tangini…or Tanny and Manny cause you guys love adding y to the owners and FO guys…thus WOODY
The Jets are good for about 8 and 8 maybe 9 and 7 because they have no QB….and I see nothing in this years draft that will fix the problem.
The owners for the most part should hang out in the owners box, shut up and surround themselves with quality people….and maybe a ventriloquist to put better thoughts into their hollow Woody souls.
Hello wood man…we are sick and tired of waiting, of being he second team in New York. Either win now or we want a new owner….how about Curtis Martin for example.

Bent, Tangini screwed up with Pete Kendall last year. As a result, our O-Line (and our Offense) was one of the worst in the league. In addition, they had no depth on the O-Line. Many of the Defensive players were playing out of position, due to the stubborn desire to play a 3-4 defense. As a result, each of those players suffered and the Defense was one of the worst in the league. In both instances, a big reason for our poor performance was Tangini. This year, they have spent a fortune on many players whose best years are behind them, hoping that they will somehow rise to the occasion. We are hoping that they will do the right thing in the draft. What I am saying is, if management does not do the job — they have to move on. Isaiah has not done the job, he has had every opportunity yet, the Knick ownership might keep him on. If Tangini does not make us competitive, this season, another management team should have the opportunity. By Woody making that kind of a statement, he is saying that he will put up with mediocrity. As a Jet fan — I am sick of mediocrity. How about you?

Not to say I like the Jets being medicore, but I think they got confused by 2006′s success (they caught every break). They didn’t evaluate the team as well as they should have and now they are trying to compensate. I think it would take any new regime a couple of years to install their system and our D wasn’t much better with Herm’s 4-3. It just had Abraham who made Ellis look better and allowed Vilma to be Vilma. I think Tangini has had good drafts, so far, and will improve this year. Personally I don’t care what we do until we face a strong schedule again. The 10-6 to 4-12 to 10-6 to 4-12 has been annoying. I’ll take 8-8 against a strong schedule than 10-6 against a weak one any day. It took Cowher over ten years to get to the Superbowl and win. We can give Mangini four.

Bent, We don’t know what is going to happen with this year’s pre-season moves. I hope that Faneca is a monster, Woody is a road grader, Kris Jenkins stuffs the middle, etc… What I was saying is that Woody Johnson should not have given Tangini a free ride, by saying that ‘no matter what happens this season, neither one would be fired’. Winning should be expected and required and losing should not be tolerated. Three years of free-agents, drafting, and coaching should be enough to identify whether Tangini is capable or not. If not, they must go. I don’t think we are any better than when they took over. If you are taking this year’s free-agents into your equation — the jury is still out on all of them. Although, I think some of these players will come through — I hate the fact that they spent a fortune and everybody is a questionmark. That is like saying – let’s throw everything at the wall, something will stick. That’s not good management, that’s guessing. That being said, let’s hope for a monster year all around.

i dont believe the whole win now attitude applies to this team….i think all the signing of the vets will only help develop our young players….and who better not to learn from then alan faneca?
