NFL Votes to Allow Defensive Headsets

by Bassett on April 1st, 2008 at 6:55 pm

The NFL owners have voted 25-7 today in favor of allowing defensive players to have radio receivers in their helmets. There will be two defensive players allowed to have the communications device in their helmets, but only one can be on the field at any time.

While this measure was shot down last year the past two years, a certain high-profile incident involving the taping of defensive signals might have tipped the balance of the vote this year.

Nine no votes are needed to shoot down such a proposal, which came two short of passing last year.

Now let’s see if Lovie Smith and others like Tony Dungy complain of defensive headsets going out like they have in the past (regarding their trips to Foxboro).

Next, they will be taking text messages on their Blackberries. Robots will replace players. Bring the Univac computer down to the field to predict the defense. Screw technology.

I admit, I am old fashioned but, let the QB’s call the plays, the defensive captains set the D, and the ref’s make the calls.

hold on. im confused.. why would 2 players be allowed to have headsets but only 1 on the field at the time??? does that mean like a backup has to wear one i feel like thats pointless
cause if you think about it youd want probably i dont know for example harris and rhodes to have them but appparently thats not allowed so that rule is just dumb. it should be 1 or 2 not this 1 on the field on a time stuff

The other player who will probably be Rhodes, since I see Harris as the lead man, has an extra helmet on the sidelines in case Harris was injured and had to leave Rhodes would get his helmet and call the D. I think its a good move.

So we have Harris with a headset on the field, and he gets the wind knocked out of him and needs to come out for two plays. Do we make him switch helmets with someone else on the field? No, we give the fresh player the new helmet.

Well first of all you cant switch helmets. Before the game starts u have to give the league the 2 players who will be wearing the headsets. so its gunna be harris. and then for the 5 plays hes off the field itll be his backup i guess, still dumb it should jsut be 1 or 2.
