Film Room: Kentwan Balmer Highlights

by Bassett on April 2nd, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Over the course of the next few weeks, we are going to try and run highlights most every day of college players that you might or might not be familiar with, but could be names you will be hearing more as the Draft approaches.

Today’s installment: Kentwan Balmer, the DE from the UNC.

The best jumper and arm-raiser to whip up the crowd in the draft. No wonder he’s flying up draft boards. Fox Sports really put a lot of effort into that highlight reel.

Jet fans, we need Balmer! This guy is the purest 3-4 D-End in the draft, he has a great build for the position and if the jets could get him with our 2nd round pick, we will walk away from the draft with a great 3-4 end for the future of our defense. DMC in the first, Balmer in the 2nd.

Balmer is going in the top fifteen picks, so no, he won’t be available at 36.

he also comes with his sweet funky bass line

I’d love to trade down and add him. Our front 7 would be, in theory, vastly improved. If we add him and a corner in the second round (hopefully we got another 2nd rounder for the trade down) our D on paper is a working 3-4.

Now we just need a trade down partner.

I see him as a better fit in a 4-3 than a 3-4. His best traits – his quickness and pursuit skills – would be wasted as a 3-4 end, and his aggressiveness could actually be used against him to drive him too far upfield. Plus, I’ve seen a couple of reports that said he was an underachiever with an on-and-off motor throughout his UNC days. (Explains how a guy with his dominant skills doesn’t even make first-team All-ACC once.) Doesn’t sound like a “core-values” player.

As the Jets have shown in the past, they are always willing to trade up for a player they really like, shown last year with Revis and Harris. If the jets cannot trade down from 6, they could trade up from 36 into the mid-late first round if it meant landing balmer. They could use their 36th overall pick as part of a package to trade up. I just don’t see the Jets being able to trade down from 6 unless Matt Ryan is still available, and even if he is, teams would accomplish the same goal for less picks by trading up with the patriots for the 7th pick.

Seanmac – I know Balmers stock has been rising, but to say he is a definite top 15 pick is not set in stone. I’ve seen more mock drafts that don’t even have him in the 1st round, than ones that have him in the top 15. He is consistently picked between 25 to the seahawks and early into the 2nd round. Now im not syaing he cant be a top 15 pick since I am clearly a big fan of the guy and I know how good he is, but when I said the jets could get him in the 2nd I meant they could get him as their second pick by possible trading up.

Pound4Pound – I disagree, I think his body and his style of play would translate into the 3-4 beautifully.

Interesting Kirwan article on “myths.” Although, I’m not sure what his credibility is like after projecting Gholston as the no. 1 pick:

I can’t say this enough……………………………………………………………. I just love the picture of Ellis sacking Brady on the banner!!!!!!!

  10. Since the last poster digressed into talking about the banner, here’s my 2 cents:

Looks great, except don’t know how I feel about Kellen being front & center. Since the QB is a big ? on the Jets right now. why not have a QB-less banner and get David Harris back in, maybe LC, too, now that he’s back in good graces? Would it be such a stretch to have a banner without a QB?

Now the site looks much better.

Balmer or not…that is the question….

I SUSPECT THAT HE IS A DEFINITE 2ND ROUND PICK….

….I also suspect that Langford (in the 3rd round)..will be as good or better in the long run as Balmer….

I DON’T THINK THAT HE EQUATES WELL WITH GHOLSTON OR MCKELVIN…FOR A 1ST ROUND PICK

If we trade back into the first round we have more pressing needs than a slightly better than average college DT. If we trade back in we need to get a right tackle or a cornerback.

I’d really like to see a trade out of that #6 spot. Getting an additional second round pick for moving back 3-6 spots would free the Jets to look at someone like Balmer, a QB, WR, CB, ILB in the first two rounds. Due to the perceived depth of talent in this draft, they would be well served to create additional picks in the second and third rounds.
