With the Sixth Pick: Leodis McKelvin

by Bassett on April 2nd, 2008 at 2:52 pm

We are running a series of posts on the topic of who you think the Jets should pick with their slated sixth pick in the draft.

Now clearly some players don’t figure to be there at the sixth pick but just like Mangini, Tannenbaum & Clinkscales have to prepare for all outcomes … so should we.

So how does this work? The process is simple, we are going to take it one player at a time (no jumping ahead!!) 1-10 off our Mock Draft Muncher and talk about the benefits or drawbacks to drafting that particular player, and what it would mean to the Jets in both the short and long-term.

Today, Troy State CB Leodis McKelvin.

Does anyone think he will be better than Revis? If it isn’t definite that he will at least be equal we shouldn’t use the 6th on him.

I’m not too familiar with him other than all the draft talk and from the highlight clip posted the other day. I think it said he had 2 INTs this past season and 70 tackles, not sure how that stacks up based on Troy’s conference as opposed to SEC and others. 2 INTs sounds low to me. Looks good on punts, but has he faced any high powered offenses? I’m not saying that he didn’t, I really don’t know.

REVIS IS A WASTED PICK IF WE DON’T GET ANOTHER TOP CORNER.

…because…they will simply throw to the other side.

McKelvin is the only corner that the Jets have reportedly
    looked at closely…

IF THEY APPROVE OF MCKELVIN…THEN THIS FOR ME WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT PICK.

EITHER WE SHOULD GET A FABULOUS Defensive End OR Cornerback 1ST IN THIS DRAFT.

So I hope that this is the case.

getting a conerback will b great for the jets….this will let our defense blitz more and with the front 7 we got, if we draft a high cb we will be a very good defense!!!

We would have to trade down. Six is WAY high.

I agree with meazzi and I feel that if we got another CB of an all-pro caliber we would have one of the youngest and most talented secondaries in the league. I would truly enjoy watcihng this team match up against the best offenses because with those DB’s, QB’s will be forced to take more time in the pocket meaning more sacks.

I think going corner with the sixth pick would be OK but I want to know what McKelvin has over guys like Mike Jenkins and Dominque Cromartie first…I feel like there are a handful of solid cornerbacks in this draft, without a clear cut #1…I’ve seen mocks with Jenkins going first, others with McKelvin, etc. Unless McKelvin is a guy that they LOVE and HAVE to have, the Jets might be better off looking elsewhere at 6.

As the SB has shown it doesnt matter how good ur secondary is, if you can get pressure on the QB, it forces mistakes! I’d rather take a DE/OLB than a CB.

  9. avatar Bent says:

Kirwan’s article yesterday said that was a myth though, for what it’s worth…

  10. avatar RK says:

Yes myth. DB goes hand in hand with pass rush. Both being fair makes both better. Poor DBs and the pass rush gets avoided, poor pass rush and DBs are left exposed because they are tripled moved on.

I agree with Jeff, this past SB has shown the value of a top flight pass rush, but it dosen’t hurt to have an outstanding secondary also. That is why we should take Gholston at #6 and Antoine Cason or Brandon Flowers at #36. Our defense would be rock solid. We would have an awesome pass ruch with Pace, B. Thomas, and Gholston, and an excellent secondary with K. Rhodes, E. Smith, D. Revis and one of the two aforementioned CB.
