Denver Expects to Give a ‘Late-Round’ Pick for D-Rob?
Mike Klis from the Denver Post writes that the Broncos might have compensation in mind for the odd-man out on from the Jets, DT Dewayne Robertston.
On the second day, the Broncos hope to use one of their late-round picks to acquire Jets” defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson.
At this point, it seems that the potential salary dump that Robertson would represent with at least something in return would be a victory, if anyone really had to have him, they would have made a better offer by now .
With Randy Moss garnering a 4th rounder last year, and the hoarding of draft picks by teams as never before, the Jets will be lucky to get much for Robertson. It’s hard to say exactly what a “late-round” pick is, but I would consider it 5th round and onward.

Can we get Bob Denver, John Denver, or Denver Pyle in return?
the main issue here is the lack of prescience by our organization.
if we really needed Jenkins (I am one who thought DRobb was fine in the middle, just not worth being the top paid DT in the league), we should have traded DRobb last year when he was worth more.
If we thought he was fine, we should have renegotiated an extension with him last year with the extra wasted cap space.
This is the worst of both worlds. He did not help our team enough to win more than four games and he is garnering zilch in return.
Not a good use of talent however one slices it.
PREDICTION: If DRobb plays for a 4 3 D he makes pro bowl.
Harlan
The knee condition existed two years ago, so he would have been just as hard to trade. Maybe even harder with an extra year on his big contract. With no decent replacements available, it was probably wise to get another year out of D-Rob and find out once and for all how well he would adapt to the new position.
I still think they’d have kept him if he had a more reasonable contract, but didn’t think it was likely they could extend him.
Jenkins was actually available last year – for a first rounder. Thank goodness they showed such foresight and got him much cheaper one year later.
I think the Jets should try to renegotiate his contract and keep him. It seems though that D-Rob thinks that he can do much better as a FA and that is why the FO may be willing to accept anything. It is just sad, that good players must be let go or traded for low round picks. He is too good of a player and I would agree with Harlan, in a 43 system he may become a pro-bowler. This year, Mangini and his sytem must deliver the goods , otherwise giving away our 1st round picks like Vilma and Robertson because they do not fit can put the franchise back for years to come.
And..Bassett ..the Randy Moss for a 4th round pick is an excuse for bad trades. The reason Moss was traded for a 4th, we all know, was not because of talent but rather character. And Moss showed them how wrong they were, that is why the Eagles were offering him a ton of money.
Hopefully the Jets can get a conditional pick, so that if he does make the Pro Bowl, they get rewarded, whereas if he doesn’t the Broncos don’t have to give up much. That will mean a deal can get done.
Remember, if we didn’t “give away” Vilma and Robertson and kept the 4-3 in place, we’d be faced with a horrible decision now as two guys with knee problems reach the end of their contracts and seek a long term extension.
Nikolas, I disagree with your premise because D-Rob never distinguished himself in the 4-3 and Vilma was starting to be exposed as a 4-3 MLB. D-Rob needed to be paired with a Kris Jenkins-type in the 4-3 to succeed. So, I don’t think we ever saw D-Rob at his best in the 4-3. As for Vilma, we saw McGahee destroy him on runs right at him in the 4-3. Vilma’s weakness is his straight-on form tackling. And, both have degenerative physical issues: D-Rob’s knees; Vilma’s back. So, I’m not sure how losing either because the 3-4 was not suited to their skills could “put the franchise back for years to come.” Also, if the Jets had stuck with the 4-3, they would’ve needed to acquire: a DT, DE and 2 OLBs, along with keeping Vilma and D-Rob. Any way you slice it, the front 7 needed a major overhaul.
Yeah, both were better with Jason Ferguson in the lineup in 2004. Still, Lance Legree and James Reed were adequate replacements…
Vilma’s issues are his knees too, not his back…right?
I think as Jet fans we are looking at D-Rob through biased eyes. This guy was brough in to be the next Warren Sapp, or so that’s what Herm and Bradaway billed him as. He didn’t display half that dominance. In everyone elses view of D-Rob, he’s really an average D-linemen and that’s why he has basically zero trade value now. Even if his knee was good, he’s no where near a Jenkins, S. Rogers, or C. Williams. Sure he’s a decent pass rusher, but he’s a liability in run defense. Let’s be honest, when he wasn’t on the field being subbed for did you notice any difference in the defense? I for one, didn’t.
Hell, if we get a 7th round pick for him, I’d be jumping for joy…
Lets be honest with ourselves…
Dewayne Robertson was and never will tagged as a successful 4th overall pick. Hes injury prone and just isn’t big enough. Cut our losses and trade him for any pick they give us.
Ps…Love the fact that the organization is finally showing some sense of urgency!
D Rob should be packaged with the 6th pick to witch would inflate his value slightly. I must admit we have been getting riped in trades for as long as I can remember… Rob More, Herm Edwards, Vilma, I’ll even say Barlow! We did get good value for Keyshawn and Abraham. I’d rather see D Rob playing in at DE next year just out of pure spite and if he’s going to play hard ball move him to TE next year and Franchise his arse!
thank god lets get rid of d rob listen i thought we gave up to much when we drafted him. He is not big enough to play in our d will he be better in a 4-3 time will tell but when we ran a 4-3 he didnt exactly light it up and there was some talent around him i believe j abraham played next to him and ellis and ferguson so i mean he was one of those workout warriors before the draft and i’ll take whatever we can get just to give us more cap room. As for vilma i was a huge fan of his from when he was at the u but he didnt fit either so he had to go d harris will be a pro bowler mark my words vilma just isnt physical enough to play 3-4 i would like to maybe get a conditional pick but whatever good luck to vilma and hope we play him in the superbowl in the next few years as for d rob he’s a bum and he’s been a bum
It’s possible the FO blew it by not trading D-Rob last year but I wouldn’t automatically assume the options were much better. As was said earlier, he was a year farther from the end of a fat deal and his knee problems had already been revealed. We’ll never know. What we do know is that the FO has now made a clear decision about the direction of the team and is acting on it decisively. That’s all you can ask. One of the worst mistakes a business can make is to value an asset based on what it paid rather than on what the current market will bear. All businesses make mistakes. The successful ones adjust quickly to the cold realities of the present environment and move on.
harlan, d-rob played three years in a 4-3 and didn’t make a pro-bowl. and that was before his knees deteriorated to the point that he can’t even pass a physical. what makes you think that he will be a pro-bowler now?
18andOne and junior have it right, D-Rob is just an average player.
mike, i don’t understand why people think that he could be a full-time DE ina 3-4. this is one position–not to start a riot–where height and arm length do matter.
finally, his contract is a cap nightmare, which in my view would be well worth getting rid of even if we just had to give him away for nothing.
Dewayne Robertson got 10.5 sacks and 114 tackles in three seasons at Kentucky, since he been a Jet he’s got 14.5 and 172 tackles career. He’s been a Jet five years, face it boys he was a draft pick that flopped its not anybody’s fault he looked good in College, but I wanted to get rid of him last year. He never really implessed me.
i agree with aticus….if we can get anything for him it would be a victory especially a second day pick….
its a hell of a lot better then nothing… and u never kno what these second day picks can turn into….we could be trading drob for a future pro bowler….. i would rather take that shot in the dark then cut him and not get anything!!!!!
GO JETS!!!!! I will be at the draft and i cant wait!!!!!!
ian: I just like have him there because he wouldnt get blown off the line. Good for run support. It would be a different story if we were in a 4-3 and he had to rush… IF he lost 5-10 lbs his knees would hold up better and if Jenkins goes down or isnt up to it he can slide back. Rotating quality players worked for the giants last year some what?
Hey Ed can you give me a ride down?!? I’ll buy you a beer!
What he can do is steamroll ahead toward the QB sometimes, and that’s where the Sapp comparisons always came from. Doesn’t Denver rotate their D line a lot? That would work to D Rob’s advantage. He can get a multi year deal if he gets cut, and I’m sure that’s what he’s after.
You guys are really beating up on D-Rob. Did you ever consider that it is a team game and that D-Rob is only as good as his surrounding cast. Make sure to include coaching in that cast. If you compare D-Rob’s stats to any NT in the NFL, he has double the amount of tackles of most NT’s and just as many, if not more sacks. Check it out. As far as his being injury-prone, I believe he has missed two games in his career (none last year).
Is his contract a good one — no way.
Is he as bad as most of you think – no way.
I would keep him to back up Kris Jenkins and occasionally play along side him. Remember, it is a team game. Also, stop listening to the media! Half way through this past season, they were shipping Eli Manning out of town — now he’s their poster boy.
Harvlis, well said!
Harvilis, a NT in a 3-4 is not suppose to pile up the tackles. A NT in a 3-4 is suppose to take on two defenders, take up space, so the play making linebackers can make the plays without having to deal with blockers. D-Rob will never be a good NT in a 3-4. How many times did he not do his job last season? He was effective in his first season with Mangini but took a huge step back last season which is why they do not want to pay for his services.
I would absolutely trade this guy just to save the cap money and get a draft pick in the 5th round on someone who would actually be useful this season.
Bent, I thought that Vilma had a back issue that worried some clubs when he was drafted, but I “mis-remembered.” It was his knee.
Frank, I never said he was a great NT. I agree with you, he is a DT and was played out of postion. But, the surrounding cast and the defensive game plan has had a lot to do with his success. If the center and guards don’t have to worry about a rushing LB, and if the DE’s don’t do their jobs — it all falls back on D-Rob. If D-Rob was so bad – how come David Harris was able to be all over the field. If D-Rob was not doing his job, Harris would have had an O-lineman in his facemask. His record of tackles and assists show you that, if played in the right position, he could be a force. Stop listening to the media – they change with the weather. If D-Rob comes out and has a good game – he’s an All-Pro. If he has a bad game – why didn’t we take a seventh round pick for him. No one does it by themselves.
THESE GUYS( H.C.OF JETS,GM) BETTER GET IT RIGHT THEY ARE BLOWING IT BIG TIME WITH THIS 3-4 D, MINI BILL MUST PRODUCE AND IF D-ROB GOT TO GO THEN SO BE IT, BUT GET VALUE REGARDLESS DON’T GET SWINDLE! IF CHAD NOT THE MAN, GET A QB, THE OTHER GUY IS MAKING ME SEE VISIONS OF BROWNING NAGLE(YIKES) AND MAKE SURE HE’S GOT AN ARM. AS FAR AS THE 6TH PICK, DE, 3-4LB, RB, JUST AS LONG THEY ARE STUDS!!!
