Buzz: Aqib Talib & Mario Manningham Removed From Team’s Draft Boards?

towelie.jpgProFootballWeekly is back at it again this year leaking the marijuana habits of some of the higher ranked prospects in the draft …namely Aqib Talib (CB – Kansas) and Mario Manningham (WR – Michigan). Some teams have even gone as far as to “remove” the player(s) from their draft boards.

No matter whether or not you are a subscriber to High Times, there’s a risk here.  Teams seem to be more troubled by the mindset of these players and their behavior around the situation. With teams investing large amounts of cash into these as of yet unknown commodities, it will be interesting to see if they really do fall and how far in the Draft.

  1. I can only assume that we are one of the teams that removed these guys from their draft boards – or something close to it. Its too bad, with Manningham’s stock dropping alreday (due to 40 time) I think he is going to be a steal if he lasts past the second round (and yes I know that right now we don’t have a third draft, but lets be fair just because we have certain picks today doesn’t mean thats where we’ll be picking come draft day)

  2. You’re a Towel.

  3. Manningham ran a 4.38 at his Pro Day, so actually his stock had recovered somewhat.

I don’t think this has a short term effect physically, but has to lead to questions about attitude and work ethic.

  4. You are a towel indeed sir.

Just remember how lucky we were that the JETS front office did their homework on Warren Sapp having smoked a ‘lil weed in COLLEGE, because otherwise we’d have taken Sapp instead of Kyle Brady.

Mind you, Kyle Brady is considered one of the top players at his position in league history, whereas Warren Sapp’s marijuana use led to a brief career reiminiscent of Lawrence Phillips and he was out of the league, floundering to make a CFL team after 2 years… right?

  5. Thanks for the heads up Bent, I didn’t know that. That 40 time sounds far more akin to his on field speed. He lacks ideal size (6-0 180) but is one of the few true playmakers at his position in this draft.

I think even more then questions about work ethic it lends to questions about “suspendability”.

  6. We did get Jason Ferguson on a late round because he dropped due to smoking some dope in college.

  7. After reading the PFW article, I would view Manningham’s episode(s) as poor judgment and insist that he has the appropriate clauses in his contract. Talib, on the other hand, sounds like a real behavioral problem. The Chargers scored big-time by drafting Luis Castillo (positive for ‘roids) late in the first-round, Manningham’s situation sounds similar (both wrote letters apologizing, both are at good schools noted for their academics, etc).

  8. Yeah and that Liam.

Sack is right. I’m sure the Jets would still interview these guys (or probably already did) to determine if it would be likely to happen again, because if it won’t then it’s a non-issue.

Apparently, all of the Michigan guys (Henne, Hart, Manningham and Arrington) were really impressive in interviews at the Combine. That’s a shame though because won’t a team just think “well, all those guys were good so they were obviously all well versed in what to say”.

Talib is a big trash talker, so even before this revelation, I don’t think he’s the type of guy the Jets would take.

  9. If you’re going to insist on honesty then the answer to your question can’t be unacceptable or you’ve introduced a double standard into the question. Is this about honesty or not?

  10. In Manninghams case the main problem is not that he has smoked some weed, but that he lied about it during the interviews at the combine.

  11. The problem is it’s very difficult to discern who’s a casual user and who has a real problem. Not everyone who smokes weed or drinks heavily in college becomes a full blown alcoholic or drug addict. But some do. And even some with addiction issues are still able to show up and play at a high level, but they are probably the exceptions. If there are two totally equal prospects, the safest bet is to take the tea-totaler. But if the weed smoker is significantly better you better do some serious research and make sure you’re getting Lawrence Taylor and not Lawrence Phillips.

  12. Legalize it – don’t criticize it
Legalize it and i will advertise it

    Some call it tampee
    Some call it the weed
    Some call it Marijuana
Some of them call it Ganja

Legalize it – don’t criticize it
Legalize it and i will advertise it

    Singer smoke it
    And players of instruments too
    Legalize it, yeah, yeah
That’s the best thing you can do
    Doctors smoke it
    Nurses smoke it
    Judges smoke it
    Even the lawyers too

Legalize it – don’t criticize it
Legalize it and i will advertise it

    It’s good for the flu
    It’s good for asthma
    Good for tuberculosis
    Even umara composis

Legalize it – don’t criticize it
Legalize it and i will advertise it

    Bird eat it
    And they leave it
    Fowls eat it
Goats love to play with it

  16. Jonathan you made my day.

  17. on an off topic but VERY IMPORTANT note jets central is reporting that the jets and kerry rhodes have agreed to a 5 yr
    37.5 mil extension!!!!!!!!

  18. oops sry justagreenguy i was typing that up before i saw u posted that awesome move tho

  19. I was going to post the Rhodes link. So, now all the “Chicken Littles” out there predicting that Coles’ and Rhodes’ contracts were going to go “Kendall” can calm down. I just made up “Kendall” as a noun for contract foul up that leads to being “Clarked”, which is a verb I made up meaning to be royally f***ed by someone’s dereliction of duty, like Don Corleone was Clarked by Fredo when he was shot picking fruit from the stands in Little Italy.

  20. You all made my day. We get to keep Rhodes. Rejoice!!!

  21. mike mayock on nfl network lastnight said that he and all teams were aware of the weed issue with these guys at least 4 months ago…so not real sure if i’m buying this whole “that player is our board” talk from some of these teams. He did mention the stupidity factor that many teams are concerned with where you know you r gonna get tested and you smoke anyway.

  22. Lots of people have smoked weed. Both of the last two presidents probably (only one was successful but people should have known the other was an idiot). How come teams aren’t concerned about alcohol use but they go ape over marijuana. As far as I’m concerned, pot is a much less harmful substance than alcohol. One is just more mainstream and legal.

  23. Oh yeah, I’m loving that they got something done with Rhodes. I guess that closes the door completely on Robertson coming back.

  24. llan,

Why is that?? Did they move Rhodes to Defensive Tackle this year?? lol

  25. With all the hype surrounding the NFL, college football, and the draft, you sometimes forget how young these guys are. I’m not saying that to excuse anyone’s behavior, but rather to highlight the risks involved with all draft choices. From the beginning of their tenure, Tangini have stressed that one of their most important criteria is to try to assess how important football is to the player. The weed stuff raises a flag put there are more factors to look at. If this front office has proved anything it’s that they do their homework. I’m sure it will be the same this time.

  26. bozzle,

it has to do with the cap situation and creating enough space to sign all the draft picks.
