Buzz: Gholston Met With The Patriots
It looks like the Pats may actually entertain upgrading on the D-Line / Linebacking corps … what … Victor Hobson wasn’t enough?! Vernon Gholston, the highly coveted defensive lineman in college who many say could convert to DE/OLB in the pros, met with New England yesterday.
The Patriots hosted Ohio State’s Vernon Gholston on a pre-draft visit at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday, marking another piece in the team’s extensive preparations.
Expected to be a top 10 pick, Gholston (6-3, 266) would project as an outside linebacker in the Patriots’ base 3-4 defense, potentially improving the team’s pass rush. He could also play in a two-point stance in sub packages.
It also looks like the Pats are going to be looking into some more highly touted prospects, as Mike Reiss goes onto explain.
As the NFL Network’s Adam Schefter points out in this piece on NFL.com, the Patriots are hosting several highly touted prospects before the draft — a group that includes Tennessee State cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Kansas cornerback Aqib Talib, and LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey.
Could the Pats go after a guy like Leodis McKelvin, who could be a big upgrade to a secondary that was torn apart this offseason by losses of Asante Samuel and Randall Gay in free agency? I certainly think so, but we’ll have to see what happens on draft day.

Like the Jets, I expect that the Pats are simply doing their due diligence and pretty much interviewing every prospect they can — even if they don’t take someone, I’m sure they start building a profile for when they face them.
I wouldn’t read anything into it other than the Pats are well-prepared, as usual. I would say that with their depth, they could pretty much take the best player available, although I’m sure they’d much rather trade out of #7.
I don’t see any possibility of Gholston falling to the Pats.
No? Chris Long one, Glenn Dorsey two, Jake Long three, Sedrick Ellis four, Matt Ryan five, Darren McFadden six. There, Gholston just fell to the Pats.
seanmac, yes that’s a possibility, but do you honestly think that’s going to happen? I guess you could say Ellis could go to the Raiders, but they resigned Tommy Kelly so they could move him to DT. It would make more sense for them to take Gholston. I personally think they’ll take McFadden. That scenario is a little out there considering Al Davis loves freakish athletes which Gholston and McFadden are.
I pray to God that the Raiders take Sedrick the Weight Gainer.
i would love for gholston and dmc to be there at 6…not that it will happen…but if it does…it should be easy to find a trading partner…anywhere from 15 – 20…their 1st and 2nd this year and their 1st next year for our 6th pick…then we can pick a cb,de/olb and a wr with our 1st and 2 2nd’s…
and next year we will have 2 1st rounders and possibly 2 2nd or 3rd rounders depending on how j-vil performs this year…i dont know about you guys but if this scenario plays out i will go with the trade…just my thoughts and passing time with a what if…
Wouldn’t that be a Sophie’s Choice, both Gholdston AND McFadden?
Who the F is Sophie?
Not a good analogy billvv. Sophie commits suicide in the end.
I would say it’s a good situation to have too much to choose from if that’s the case.
What exactly is a “two point stance?” Is that the one where you stand on your two hands?
