Rejoice Jets Fans!! Kerry Rhodes Extended

I had word this morning that Kerry Rhodes was dropping by the SNY studios from the gang in New York and had even forwarded on some questions for the crew to ask him (SPECIFICALLY about the contract situation and whether he would get Bob Sanders money) little did I know that while I was heading home and having dinner, news was breaking all over ‘teh internets’ that Rhodes has been extended by the Jets.
Though Rhodes did not detail the terms of the deal, he suggested that the money will be similar to the five-year, $37.5 million contract that Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders signed in December.
In total, Sanders deal was a five-year, $37.5 million $19 million in guarantees with a $8 million signing bonus.
This is a very good thing. Heading into his final year of his contract, Rhodes versatility at the line of scrimmage or back roaming in centerfield puts him in an elite class among safeties. It’s a good sign that Tannenbaum saw what he had already in terms of playmaking and leadership and sought to reward it.
Really I can’t contain my happiness. For more than a year I have been wondering if Rhodes would go down the free agent and eventual franchise-tag road. Seeing his willingness to stay on with this team for the long-term is a huge statement to the league on what the team is building in New York.

Thank god. How the hell hasn’t he made the Pro Bowl yet? Honestly, what does he have to do to show he’s an ELITE safety?
Oh man, I’m so excited i have a my screen name
Kerry is a great player!
He will shine this season with the new players on defense.
Pro Bowl
Happy this is done!
This is great news. I couldnt be happier.
This had to happen and I’m glad it did. I wonder if they’re going to do the same with Baker, though? Theoretically, he’s the last one left to “take care of”. I don’t think the Bubba signing meant much, as Baker is still the #1 guy but I kinda wonder how Tangini feels about Bake. Anyhow, this regime is making all the right moves this offseason and the draft will just stockpile even more potential talent. Anyone have their current cap situation after this Rhodes extension?
Three words. Beau. Ti. Ful.
this just made my night!!!!!!
GOOOOOOOO JETSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU TANGINI!!! now i can finally buy his jersey!
Fantastic! Hats off to the Jets FO!! Tangini has given us a great free agency period, resigned our top talent, all while preparing for the draft. Many took the leadership to task last year, lets give them their due.
Thank You! Lock up Baker! This is one of the better FO’s i’ve seen. No matter how a season is going a jet fan has “his” players and Rhodes is one of them. I’m rooting from Adrian Murrell’s younger brother Marques… He’s ~6′3″ 245 and if he’s as tough as Adrian and has that quickness??? Any one rooting for a special teamer or any one on the bubble?
After this whirlwind last two months, about the only thing left is for the players to step onto that field in September and execute. If this happens, Jets fans should be pretty happy come January. There really isn’t a whole lot the front office and coaching staff can do at this point, it’s now up to the players—great news about Rhodes
Frank: You dont think the draft is important? After that I will agree with you…
HOOOOOO RAYYYYYY RHODES
Great job Mr T
The defense now has 5 studs Rhodes, Harris, Revis, Jenkins and Pace who are all signed for a long time. And, IMO, nobody worse than average at the other positions. A better CB to match with Revis and a better ILB to team with Harris, and this will be a very good defense. Great signing and great news!
yay
Helllllllllllll Yeaaaaaaaaaa!!!!
im so happy i peed a little bit
Knew this was coming and there should be no contract issues other than possibly Bakers for a while so that is great news too.
Nice to see some Rhodes highlights on SNY.
When I heard this story I thought to myself…”I am so happy that Tangini is making the decisions for us.” Although it was a pretty easy call. This is the Jets so I was holding my breath. On either side of the ball we can use 1 or 2 more play makers. I think the key to our season will be wether or not the Jets give Clemens the ball. If they do I see really good things. If they dont I forsee a year full of three-and-outs and or picks-for-6. This team needs to move on from the Chad Penington era. He needs a fresh start and so do we.
NOW ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS TRADE DOWN DRAFT MCKELVIN AND WE WOULD HAVE THE BEST YOUNG SECONDARY IN THE LEAGUE!
Even a skeptic like me is thrilled by this move.
YEAH!!! This is the best news from an already incredible offseason. Congrats to Kerry. Go JETS!
I think I need to go find a clean pair of underwear.
This was never really in doubt. I hope the deal is as reported, that seems reasonable.
To whoever asked for the Jets cap position following this move, apparently it’s a 33.5m contract with 20m guarantees, but not sure what the signing bonus is. One fifth of the signing bonus will hit this years cap, but his salary will be about $1m, as it would already have been. So the cap hit this year is probably between 4 and 5m and we will be over the cap by about that much (less the 1m already accounted for).
Bear in mind though that once Robertson is cut or traded, we make a net saving of 8.4m after accounting for the cap hit.
One of the best offseason signings! Congrats Kerry!
A move that needed to be done. Can’t wait for the draft.
Locking up rhodes really solidifies the defense for the long term.
if we come out of the draft with a passrusher, and an offensive weapon, i think we’ll be in really good position to have a successful year!
How can some of you say that this was never in doubt? We are talking about the Jets here. Its not like the organization has been known to be a big spender in the past. Honestly, I was sure they were going to franchise him. Maybe the organization is finally turning the corner.
B – Can you guys try and get some sort of rough Cap number from the Beaters (with and w/o D-Rob)? While this is AWESOME news (Own a #25) – it may mean we have to trade out of #6 purely because of Cap reasons.
Never mind – somehow I missed your previous post!
VERY good news.
Tannenbaum must be given his due, not tagged with the organization’s history. He’s not turning any corner, and this resigning is evidence of it. He’s been very consistent in managing the cap, looking to keep the future unclouded with heavy cap numbers to contend with. The guy’s good!
Ladies: make no mistake, this is a BIG DEAL!
Drinks on DSmizzle!
Doesn’t it seem that Tangini are learning from their prior mistakes. Instead of allowing Coles or Rhodes to be a distraction heading into camp, (as Kendall was last season) they locked up these players before the draft. Also, I think the signing of Fanaca will prove to be an unbelievable boost to the entire offense, but particularly with the development of D’Brick and Mangold.
Am I the only fan that wants to see D-Rob stay on the team? Let’s see what he can do when he isn’t constantly facing double teams.
Not much else to add to the above. Great news. Seemed to come out of nowhere. What a relief and I couldn’t be much happier.
What a great way to start the day, this is terrific!!
Bent – when you gave the cap figures – likely over by 4-5m, but we get 8.4m back when Drob is dealt with, is that including or excluding the money we’ll need to deal with draftees? What I mean is, do we need the 3.4m (8.4m-5m) to sign our picks or has that money been put aside?
Does everyone think that this move precludes any possibility of resigning Drob? He’s have to be restructured of course, but he won’t play for peanuts.
Great move! The recipe for a successful franchise is #1. Sign your own best players, 2. Add key FAs without breaking the bank, 3. Draft smart. We seem to be doing all three.
Rhodes should have made the pro bowl in 2006 and probably 2007, his stats were significantly better than John Lynch’s who made it that year.
NYC – No I had taken the money earmarked for the draft picks into account. Theoretically, with no other moves, they could sign all their draft picks and then have about 3-4 million available…which I think is more than Robertson could get on the open market.
Thanks, Bent, That kind of cap info is great to know. I suppose if Drob goes to the Broncos (or gets cut), that gives us a good few mil to play with over the course of training camp. Did Tanny do a great job, or what??
Jets off season Checklist:
Upgrade OL–Check
