Kerry Rhodes Contract Numbers

by Bassett on April 10th, 2008 at 12:24 pm

Tom Rock has the contract information on the Newsday blog about the Kerry Rhodes deal

It’s for five years and is worth $33.5 million with guaranteed money of $20,002,000.00. Why is that $2,000 significant enough to talk about? Because it gives Rhodes the most guaranteed money of any safety in NFL history, bettering the flat $20 mil that Bob Sanders got last year by two grand.

In his rookie year — after only having played a few years in college at safety — Football Outsiders ranked Rhodes at the same level as some guy named Troy Polamalu. In 2006 & 2007, it’s been upwards ever since.

Sanders is excellent and gets a lot of attention since he plays for the Colts. But the message that the Jets wanted consented to send regarding Rhodes’ contract was clear … he’s 25 years old and the best safety in the league, period.

Now a message to us fans — myself included.

No more whining if he doesn’t make the NFL sanctioned beauty contest, AKA the Pro-Bowl. If he doesn’t make it this year, it’s because we don’t care enough to stuff the ballot box for him.

What’s the signing bonus, though? Sanders only got $8m IIRC.

As per my rough calculations in the other Rhodes thread, the Jets may have about $3m spare once Robertson is cut or moved (after the cost of paying for rookies is taken into account).

Rhodes had been better than Polamalu for a while. Its deff him and Bob Sanders fighting for the top spot. The only reason why Guys like John Lynch and Polamalu have made the Pro bowl over him is because their “names” and nothing more. Thats fine, its unfortunate though that only Jets fans seem to realize how good he is, hopefully that changes soon

If you compare Rhodes numbers over the last 2 seasons to Polamalu, Sanders, and Ed Reed, you will see that Rhodes has better numbers in every possible category. ( with the exception of interceptions, ed reed – 12, rhodes – 9) Rhodes is without a question top 3 safetys in the nfl, period.

as jets fans we know rhodes should have gone to 2 probowls…that said,im soooo happy to know that rhodes is signed…he’s been the best player we have on defense for years…rhodes is the only 1 it seems that made the transition from 4-3 to 3-4 without skipping a beat…what a relief…this just made my miserable day into a good 1…thanx for the great news…peace…

Do you really think the Jets wanted to send that message or was it the agent that wanted that message sent.. Sorry, I do not see the vlaue in guarenteeing more than a an agent wants.

  7. avatar Bassett says:

good point Jet Realist … well said. I changed a word to make your point.

As long as K-Ro plays as he has in the past, he will definatly make the pro bowl this year. In fact I dont see any reason why he won’t have his best year ever. I think this huge contract will finally make everyone else in the NFL world realize how good he really is and has been for us.

  9. avatar dakar says:

i personally dont care who wanted the mesage sent…im happy he’s signed…thats the bottom line… and thats what we should all care about…not who wanted a message sent…just my thoughts…

I just can’t wait for the inevitable, “yeah the Rhodes signing is nice, but it still doesn’t sovle their QB problem” article tomorrow. I forget now, whose turn is it to pee in my cornflakes, Gary Myers?

  11. avatar LONGTIMEJETFAN says:

Glad that deal is complete…now i hope they take care of Baker the First down maker(when they actually throw his way)..lol..

  12. avatar gdog says:

this is not a fuve year extension but rather a tear-up of the old contract and in reality only extends him 4 years beyond the original

  13. avatar billvv says:

Pro Bowl votes are hard to come by when you team isn’t featured in any of the years games. Maybe the Rhodes signing and the names of our acquisitions will get us more this year.

  14. avatar Jeff Dolfini says:

I don’t care if any of our players ever make the pro bowl, I want a championship this year. These players better go out and get it done this year. They have been set up to win. Can someone please explain to me what kind of cap space we have now. We have to be in the red, I think we are spending a little too much money. I think the front office knows that all of these contracts will be voided after the 2010 season during the lockout.

  15. avatar billvv says:

gdog, everywhere I read “extension.” Where do you see “tear up the last year?”

  16. avatar swizzle says:

awesome news, now have 3 young pro bowl caliber studs at CB, ILB, and safety locked up for the next several years.

  17. avatar Bent says:

The fact Rhodes missed the last two pro bowls probably helps us because it could have made the deal more expensive.

  18. avatar contumelious says:

The Jets don’t pay based on Pro-Bowl appearances. As we’ve seen in the past couple years, guys can get voted in on reputation. Who would you want as a safety right now, Rhodes or John Lynch.

Now all the Jets key players are locked up through the 2011 season or have team options in 2010. Important because of the likely uncapped season.

As for this year, the Jets right now have about 5-million to spend. With the trades of D-Rob (8-mil) and Pennington (4-mil) they’ll have about 17 for rookies and free agents. Should be plenty. And yeah, the Rhodes deal may pave the way for Chad to be dealt to save money.

  19. avatar Bent says:

Contumelious…your figures are pretty good, but you haven’t taken into account that 20 percent of Rhodes’ signing bonus will go against this year’s cap. I don’t believe they’ve announced it yet, but I assume it will be most of the 20m guaranteed. Therefore that’s another 4m or close to it on this year’s cap. Cutting/trading Robertson is likely, which will leave them with about 3-4m spare after the rookies are paid. Pennington too is a possibility (I doubt it personally), but I don’t think the saving is 4m anyway, I make it 1.8m.

Losing Barrett could save us 3m, I believe, so that’s a possibility.

i love rhodes, but he’s never been as good or as consistant as palamalu was in his rookie year, or their superbowl season.

I dont watch the steelers enough to say who’s better right now, but palamalu was all over the field during their superbowl run. both are probowlers in my eyes tho.

  21. avatar Bent says:

Don’t believe the hype. Polamalu is real good, but not as great as they make him out to be. When the hype was at its peak, he used to fly about making plays but could also be a bit reckless. Over the last few years he has reigned in his discipline, but now this means he makes fewer impact plays. He is probably better now, although he stands out less on the highlight reels.
