Link: Kerry Rhodes in Scouts Inc’s Re-Draft

by Bassett on April 11th, 2008 at 11:00 am

ESPN’s Scouts Inc. did a re-draft from 2005, and guess which Jet who just signed a rather large contract made the first round in the re-draft?

With the 17th pick of the 2005 Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select Louisville Safety, Kerry Rhodes.

When you consider the deal the Jets just signed Rhodes to and add on his first three years of (averaging under $500,000, I think) a smart deal becomes even smarter. Look for this model to continue while Tannenbaum is in control, it’s what allows them a decent amount of cap space in the past two seasons.

oops, wrong thread, sorry about that

This list does not address Doug Jolley.

Totally off topic, but Johnny’s comment reminded me of this. I thought this was interesting:

Doug Jolley – career stats (5 seasons)
    120 catches 1303 yards

Chris Baker – career stats (6 seasons)
    124 catches 1311 yards

On the face of it, Jolley has been the more productive player but is probably going to be out of the league next year while Jets fans are calling for Baker to get a big money extension.

Can you imagine some evil GM saying “what if I told you that instead of signing Baker to big money we can pick up a guy who’s a year younger with near identical production for the veterans minimum – would that be something you might be interested in?”

Better the devil you know, thankfully.

There’s a lot to criticize from the Herm era. Picking Rhodes in the 4th round is not one of them.

I guess, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

Am I the only one who thinks Rhodes should of been picked higher than 17? I mean, I consider Rhodes to be of the same calibur as Ed Reed and Bob Sanders. And im sure if one of those two were in this draft in place of Rhodes, they would be much higher than 17. Probably top 5.

    Bent –

With regards to Baker & Jolley, I’m thinking of a TV commercial running here recently — has a line like “98% of statistics can be used to say anything.”

I think blocking ability would also factor in, and as we’ve seen, Baker is quite competent. Baker also doubles his lifetime TD total — 12 to 6. Funny how if someone just looked at the numbers, they could come to the scenario you describe.

Do you get style points for acrobatic ability and being clutch?

Mike G, while I completely agree with you, any player on the jets will be dropped down about 10 spots in a draft like that. we get no respect. that’s why we need to resign joe namath. we may not win, but at least drinks might be on the house.

marion barber as well. rhodes now should have been top 10

  11. avatar Bent says:

Exactly, r, I can just picture somebody making that move and using my stat to try and justify it. I would counter with “yes, but Chris Baker had forty times as many catches last year!” Then we’d hear the old classic…”maybe Jolley just needs a change of scene”.

I agree that Rhodes is better than several of those 16 players ahead of him, but how is anyone who doesn’t follow the Jets closely supposed to know that? Yeah, he has good stats, but as far as someone who doesn’t watch the games is concerned, he hasn’t been a probowler and he hasn’t been enough of a difference maker to help the Jets be any good (except he was in 2006, but people have short memories) and they’re never on National TV for anyone to see the difference.

I am quite happy for the masses to underrate Rhodes, just as I’m happy to fly under the radar as everyone thinks we’re a lousy team that just made a bunch of desparation moves. Let’s take some people by surprise and then hopefully this time we’ll make the playoffs and perform like we belong there.

Yeah, I agree with all of you, the Jets never seem to get the respect they deserve, and to outsiders kerry Rhodes may be a nobody because theyve never seen him play, and he hasnt made a pro bowl. I guess I should just be happy that scouts inc moved him up out of the 4th round. I think we will surprise a lot of people this year.
