One of the most respected beat writers in the NFL, Dallas Morning News’ Rick Gosselin has published his first in a series of three mock drafts he has compiled. Aware of the tensions between need-based and the best player available drafting styles, Gosselin’s first iteration takes the best player available methodology this week. Next week will be his need-based, and just speculating, but I guess the third will be a marriage of the two. Anyway, here’s his top ten:
1. Miami — Jake Long (OT) Michigan
2. St. Louis — Glenn Dorsey (DT) LSU
3. Atlanta — Matt Ryan (QB) Boston College
4. Oakland — Darren McFadden RB Arkansas
5. Kansas City — Keith Rivers (LB) Southern California
6. NY Jets — Chris Long (DE) Virginia
7. New England — Vernon Gholston (DE) Ohio State
8. Baltimore — Ryan Clady (OT) Boise State
9. Cincinnati — Sedrick Ellis (DT) Southern California
10. New Orleans — Leodis McKelvin (CB) Troy
Is Christmas planned for late April this year? The ‘Chris Long at six’ scenario seems to be getting more play lately, as I’ve heard both NFLN’s Mike Mayock and ESPN’s Matt Mosely talk about this. I have to say it just seems mind-boggling to me should it work out like this.
If faced with Chris Long, Vernon Gholston AND Darren McFadden, I’m pretty sure Al Davis’ head would explode like that scene from Scanners.
For in-depth thoughts from his former colleague, check out Matt Mosley’s thoughts on Hashmarks.

How cool would it be if Chris Long fell to us at six? Can’t see it, though.

A wonderful but not realistic scenario. In my mind the only three players worth taking at the six pick would be Chris Long, Jake Long or Glen Dorsey. The rest may be OK, but not my first choices. The speculation and anticipation is frying my brain. I’ll leave it up to the Front Office and enjoy the show come 2 weeks from now.

The FO will trade the pick citing cost efficiency reasons.

Its a weird phenomenon for me but two things are at play here– 1. This guy has been given some credibility by this blog and Mosely (who is a clown, but still..).
2. Having said that, when someone with crediblity puts something as crazy as Rivers at 5, I almost tend to believe that more than your generic Mock, which all has pretty much the same stuff going on.
Keeping my fingers crossed for Little Howie

Would the Jets have the balls to take Ryan or McFadden to force someone’s hand for a trade? McFadden is less risky, but Ryan is VERY risky. You drop to 8, or maybe 14, save money and pick up another pick or three.

Most mocks show use with choices I don’t want (Ryan or McDaddy). In these scenarios, I hope for a trade down within the top 15 choices as long as we pick up a three this year or a two next year (though a second would be fairer).
This scenario ensures the Pats and we each get a shot at a great player. I just hope the Jets don’t muff their choice. We need the better of the two great 3-4 OLBs.

I can’t say this enough, The Jets would be crazy to pass on McFadden, and if he is there at 6 they will take him.
-
The Jets invested a #2 in Thomas Jones to take the pressure off Chad and open up the offense in 2007 (Insert your own joke here). Woody Johnson will not understand and thus will not allow using our #1 pick this year on yet another running back.
-
I agree with Mike G, The Jets cannot pay on this guy

Pass

Yea, but Namath never knocked up any of them.

I can’t imagine the KC would pass up C. Long to take Rivers, it dosen’t make sense. With that in mind KC would take C. Long, Jets would take Gholston, and NE would take Rivers.

As much as I would like the JETS to take McFadden if he is there at #6, I think that they will trade him to Dalls for their 2 #1s plus another pick.
If Ryan is there, they will trade down to the Ravens #8 pick plus whatever the trade chart sys they should get in addition. -
Actually I like this mock draft by former Raiders executive Mike Lombardi, working for the NFL Network.
Here it is:
1. Miami – OT Jake Long
2. St. Louis – DE Chris Long
3. Atlanta – DT Glenn Dorsey
4. Oakland – DE Vernon Gholston
5. Kansas City – OT Ryan Clady
6. Jets – QB Matt Ryan
7. New England – OT/OG Branden Albert
8. Baltimore – CB Dominique Rogers-Cromartie
9. Cincinnati – RB Darren McFadden
10. New Orleans – DT Sedrick EllisIf this plays out, we could trade down with the Ravens for their pick plus a 3rd and 4th. We could then at #8 trade down with the Cowboys for their two #1s plus a pick this year or next. With these two trades we could fill a lot of needs and still get a very good RB at #22 or #28.

Will an OL become the number one draft pick? In 1997 Orlando Pace became the first offensive lineman taken first overall in the draft in 30 seasons. Class of 2001 enshrinee Ron Yary was the last when the Vikings took him first overall in 1968.

Many experts are saying that Sedrick Ellis is right up there with Glenn Dorsey, when it comes to talent and what their futures will look like. I think that KC has a better shot at taking Ellis than Rivers. That would still leave Chris Long for us. Although, no one knows for sure how these players will handle the next level, at least we know C. Long has got his daddy’s genes. I would have more confidence in Long than I would in Gholston. Even if Gholston can crack a walnut with his biceps.

i think the rams are going to pick chris long if jake long is gone.
the one thing i feel strongly about after reading the FO afc west four downs is that KC is going to pick Ryan
so its jake,chris,dorsey,gholston,ryan

The idea of VG going to the Patriots, gives me the same kind of sick feeling as Bruce Smith to the Bills way back when…
I think both will do well in the nfl and that right now Long is the safer pick, but VG has that kind of Shawn Meriman potential that could leaves us all with a case hind-sight 3 or so years from now…
If the top four are correct, I hope KC takes Long of VG. I rather have the Pats end up with Rivers or one of the corner backs than one of those two.
Now there are some issues with the draft in and of itself.
1) There is no way howie’s son gets past the Raiders (not possible, just accept it as a law and move on)
2) the aforementioned Keith Rivers at 5, if KC screws up in this scenario, it is because they take Ryan Clady over Chris Long or VG
3) I don’t think Matty Ice is a lock at 3 anymore, I can see ATL trading out or most likely going with the defensive front, like Sedrick Ellis
4) If there is no quaterback(Matt Ryan) at 8, Baltimore goes cb and even if this draft is best player available, I would go with Leodis over Clady talent wise…
Just some thoughts -
on number three, look for ATl to pick up a quaterback in the second round or trade into the bottom half of the first to pick up Brohm (who will be a better quaterback in the nfl, especially for a West Coast scheme than Ryan). Somethings making think Ryan is going to be a bust in the NFL.

I would rather see us take Rivers at 6. He is great at taking on blocks. He could play the middle next 2 Harris and also have him rush of the edge. I think Mangini would like the hybrid type LB he would be able 2 come up with some good blitz packages. The D moves around a lot before the snap as is imagine what he would be able 2 put together.
-
i don’t know, because i don’t follow college all that closely, but isn’t rivers just another vilma? meaning that he takes on blockers fine in college at 230, but probably not at pro level?
-
I strongly doubt Al Davis passes on Chris Long at # 4.
-
hey BENT, its okay as long as you know when/how to pull out!!!

If this happens, it would be friggin awesome. Long is a very good fit for a 3-4 DE, of course this is a MOCK draft, but a realistic one at that. The only pick I might disagree with is KC @ 5 taking Rivers, but hey we know Herm will make the wrong choice anyway. We can only help but pray Chris Long is there at 6. Then in 2nd round take the best available CB, WR, or OLB. Oh the anticipation.
