Notes from 4/17/2008 Press Conference

by Bassett on April 17th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

I didn’t get to watch the whole press conference, but here’s some quick thoughts based on what I saw from the Jets Pre-Draft Presser from GM Mike Tannenbaum, Head of Scouting Joey Clinkscales, and consultant Terry Bradway today.

The Right Approach — The press asked the expected questions about best player versus need, taking players where they would create extra depth and whether the Patriots picking behind them caused them pause. Tannenbaum was clear in saying that they couldn’t be concerned with what the Patriots do, and that they would stick to their board and matching value to the pick alloted. That’s very good news. Although the Jets have moved around to hit need in the past two years.  The Jets signings have made them less concerned about drafting for need this year, something I’ve expected from them shortly after free agency began what with all the signings they’ve already addressed.

… And Off the Field? — Joey Clinkscales always lets something slip. Last year, when asked about Miami TE Greg Olsen and his blocking, Clinkscales deadpanned something to the effect of “he can block.” It wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement. When asked about McFadden as a player this year, Clinkscales raved about his on-the-field abilities, but used the phrase “as a football player.” There are some obvious knocks on his character, and I am left wondering just how big a factor it is for the Jets. It’s clearly something that they are concerned about.

Teams Will Be Dealing Late Next Week — Tanny acknowledged that last year the Jets had an agreement in principle about moving up in the draft the night before for Revis. He stated that with the shortened timeframe, there will be even more of the same next week.

2007 Was Weak — Bradway was forthcoming in saying that they like the value in this draft well into the fourth round. Bradway noted that the group thought the draft was weak last year, and thenreferenced consolidation of picks they made. Although they never said it until now, it’s something we knew as the Pats and Jets had the same strategy in 2007. Getting two solid players in Revis and Harris along with some guys with development potential looks even better now than it did a year ago.

34 … A Very Good Year — Bradway likes the players that are out there for the 34 this year. He wasn’t so thrilled last year with what was available for 3-4 teams, but he feels theres good value for players to fit this scheme this year.

Cover Your Corners — On corners, Joey Clinkscales praised some singular attributes at the position, but didn’t indicate that there was anyone who stood out as a total package. Clinkscales said that he likes the corners in this years draft and likes the value of players “at some point.” To me, that’s an indication they aren’t in a rush to take a corner with the sixth pick … smart thinking as there just isn’t value at the top of the draft.

I’ll try and go back and watch the whole thing later and come up with more thoughts …

“Although the Jets have moved moved around to hit”

Clincksales is great. I am glad we didn’t lose him to Miami. I am excited about the prospects of this year’s selection. If last year is any indication, the Jets Draft should improve from year to successive year.

based on Bradway’s words on how deep this draft is, it seems to me the Jets would trade down.
by that logic if they don’t trade down I can’t see them take a QB on 2th round.

Ranking of biggest draft busts of all time… not surprisingly 4 Jets made the list, but as a younger fan I’ve never heard of the later two.

Clinkscales actually hinted before the part where he called McFadden a “fantastic player” that the Jets weren’t concerened with his off the field issues.

  6. avatar green duck says:

i meant trade down to get at least two more extra picks between 1th-4th rounds

maybe they could get late picks for D-Rob and CP (lets say 6th + 5th and then trading both picks for 4th round pick)

i would love the Jets to get a QB. having two young, heathy QB’s challenging each other would do only good to this team

Keep CP, green & white forever.

    a) Where is Blair Thomas?

    b) About Reggie Rembert, they said, “Fortunately for the Jets, they managed to draft WR Rob Moore in the supplemental draft that year.” AND THUS LOST THE CHANCE TO DRAFT BRETT FAVRE IN THE FIRST ROUND THE FOLLOWING YEAR.

  9. avatar matt says:

I hope mcfadden or gholston 4 us if we wanted to trade up to say 3 wat would I cost us?

  10. avatar Najy says:

They are saying too much… They need to stop saying how deep this draft is and about the things they did last year. That can only hurt us because other teams might anticipate what are moves are and what our draft strategy.

  11. avatar Mike G says:

najy, they know what theyre doing. theyre not giving away anything.

  12. avatar Matt M says:

    Is Clinkscales a made-up name?

  13. avatar Bassett says:

Matt … what do you mean? Like Buck Swope?
