The Minnesota Star Tribune reports that Jared Allen was in Minnesota today “talking to Vikings officials.” The report goes on to note that
It’s also believed his agent, Ken Harris, is in the building. That means only one thing: they are talking contract. The latest we’re hearing is that an agreement with the Chiefs is close to being in place and this thing could get done quick. We emphasize the word could, so don’t get too excited yet.
Why do we care? Because this isn’t helping the Jets get “their man” because the Chiefs — who looked to be stuck stretching to make a pick at number five with a player like OT Ryan Clady — now have a gaping hole at a position with some premium talent likely on the board still at that fifth pick. In brief, it means that the Jets will likely have one less truly lip-smacking option when it’s their turn.
Hmm … guess starting that subtly themed WOOOO! Spring Break All Year!!! bar in KC wasn’t such a good idea after all for Mr. Allen …

I’m not seeing the logic in saying that the Chefs dumping Allen will reduce the Jets’ chances of getting “their man.” The Chiefs pick before the Jets (unless there is a trade down) and have many more needs than the Jets – and some of those needs are similar to what the Jets need. Chefs need O-line help first and foremost, and also need a QB in my opinion.
Who is the Jets “man?” Seems to me they addressed the outside speed rusher need. I say it’s looking like either McFadden or a sudden trade-down after the Cheifs pick, so long as Matty Ryan is still on the board. Then you have several QB-starved teams on the outside looking in – and the Jets suddenly holding all the cards.

I agree.. Jets take Gholston, Long or McFadden if they are there.. if not.. they trade down or draft Ryan in hopes of trading him a few picks later..

I wouldn’t put it past Herm to do something totally retarded like trading arguably the best defensive end in the league and then paying an unproven top 5 pick huge money instead of just paying that money to Allen.

nice point, dave. allen is relatively young too (26/27?), so it really makes no sense to replace him with an equally costly yet very expensive DE, espcecially one who hasn’t played DE in a 4-3. as you said, it’s just the stupid kind of thing harm would do. and in doing so, they’d go from getting top OL choice at 5 down to 3rd or 4th OL choice at 17.
seanmac is right that if they get the vikings pick, it makes sense for them to take ryan and draft OL at 17. but if they have ryan and brohm very closely ranked on their draft board and some OL (albert or clady?) much more highly ranked than the rest, then it would make sense to draft OL at 5 and brohm at 17.

this couyld free up KC to take a QB Ryan 5th, or Brohm 17th (minnesota’s pick). Leaving either spot open to take some defensive line help… Chris Long (who won’t make it past four) or Ellis/Dorsey; Merling 17th, or a T, Clady 5th….
I don’t think it automatically pushes them into trying to trade with us.
Plus remember: When KC is up, the way the draft is looking there will most likely be two players that we want available… we just need to be patient and wait.
Besides seanmac, if Ryan is there the Cheifs will most likely trade out with the Ravens.
However, if D-mac is there at 5, can anyone say “How Bout them Cowboys”

It’s not out of the question that the Chiefs could take Gholston if he was still on the board, which is fine with me. (For the record, I don’t think he will be.) But I will be very surprised if the Chiefs trade Allen and immediately replace him with another defensive end. That just doesn’t work well most of the time. I think this increases the chance the Chiefs take Matt Ryan, because they’ll still be able to land an offensive lineman with that 17th pick.
If I’m KC and both Chris Long and Matt Ryan are on the clock, I’d be on the phone with the Jets looking to slide back a slot by playing them against New England.
