McFadden Meets Teddy Atlas

by Bassett on April 18th, 2008 at 4:00 am

So what was the reason that Darren McFadden was hanging out at LGA yesterday afternoon with a young lady and a burly bodyguard waiting to board a plane for Cinci? It seems that the Jets invited Darren McFadden back to New York to have dinner out on the town and then ringside to meet boxing analyst and team consultant Teddy Atlas, who was with the crew for ESPN’s Wednesday Night Fights.

As a frequent guest speaker in Hempstead and special boxing trainer to the team’s players (like Victor Hobson and Kerry Rhodes) everyone knows that Mangini respects the counsel of Atlas, who has keen ability to understand, focus and motivate athletes.

Smart people seek counsel from those they trust, and my thought is that Atlas’ meeting might have helped Mangini and Tannenbaum to settle the scale on what to do with the player should the Jets be staring at him with the sixth pick. As far as I can tell, there’s no player on which the Jets have done as much overt research and interviewing, this being at least the third or fourth separate meeting with the team since the Combine.

Despite all the posturing, I believe the Jets will be happy with whoever falls to them at 6, unless they get blown away by a trade deal. Could all the hype be making teams below them who may covet McFadden at least thinking about trading up?

I think Teddy wanted to see just how well this guys does in bar fights! ZOIKES! I’m pretty sure he’s going 4 or 6 — with Chris Long going in the opposite slot… see other post on this site about Jeff Ireland’s loose lips… I see it like this:
    1) Gholston
    2) Jake Long
    3) Dorsey
    4) McDaddy
    5) – wild card – Ellis/Albert/Clady/Matt Ryan — maybe Chris Long if they deal Jared Allen

I really hope the Jets don’t draft DMC, and i hope Chris Long could fall to us but if not i’d go with a CB like Leodis McKelvin. Otherwise i’d trade down to stock pile more DP’s and draft a CB in the 1st round.
RB is not a need for us right now, we don’t need one in the 1st day of the draft. CB, WR (Depth), DE (Depth), OLB (depth) are our actual needs right now, so please Jets organization, don’t draft a RB and draft Chris Long.(Or a CB)

I can’t help but think that our biggest need right now is another CB to play opposite Revis. I just can’t justify taking Mckelvin, who I think is the best CB prospect in this draft, at #6.

I guess what I am really hoping for is to trade down a couple of spots to make taking McKelvin more palateable, while also picking up another 2nd round pick.

Jets officials have met with RB Darren McFadden three times in the past month, including a night on the town.

It’s all part of their background checking and information collecting, and the Jets appear to have assuaged doubts about any character issues. Says their director of college scouting: “We’ve done our homework. If that’s the pick we choose to make, we will be comfortable with that decision.”

If he is there at six, all of our work would also drive up or trading value with the cowboys

Put it this way… Out of all the top 10 overall players in the draft DMac is the one with the most character issues(obviously). The FO is doing their very best to make sure this guy if falls to us at 6 is worth the risk due to his background with so many run-ins. My opinion is that if DMac is there at 6 and the coaches like their assessment of the guy we take him. BOTTOM LINE… he is a play-maker and at 6 it would be a great pick with somebody of that ability to fall to 6. Who cares what are needs are at this point with the 6 spot and a guy like DMac there you make it a point to do your homework because he is an absolute beast on the field. To be honest if DMac even makes it to 6 that would be a miracle the only thing holding him back is the character issues. Let’s hope Teddy Atlas’ assessment of the guy turns out to be positive because I think DMac is a special talent.

The only way I see us doing anything different is if gholsten and DMac are off the board by the time we pick at 6. Then that is when I feel the Jets should make their move to trade down and pick a solid corner or LB/DE hybred whatever is rated higher on our board.

I think we are about 4 players away from being a very good team this year. A CB, a DE, a big fast WR and of course a QB.

Lets keep in mind that we have guys like Justin Miller and Chansey Stuckey returning from injuries, and that KC might do considerably better with the revamped OL. Which makes me think we should just draft the best available player that fits the character and personality of the team. I would be inclined to go with a CB or a DE.

Our schedule is pretty tough for a team that only won 4 games last year. If it were just a tad easier I believe with the players we now have we could win 10 games. If we draft well and et 2 guys that become starters and play well we can still win 10 games.

One more impact player on either side of the ball can make a huge difference as can a slightly easier schedule..
