There’s a bunch of fresh rumor-mongering afoot, just five days from the draft …

Rumor: Jake Long Almost Locked?
Validity: Knowing that the Dolphins can run the ball to the right side for the next five years with Justin Smiley and Jake Long is a scary thought. The Dolphins have made their intentions known about signing Long and it looks like the deal is close.
My Thoughts: As fallout, it sounds like Chris Long is “very confident” he’ll be drafted by the Rams (this is the second time in two years they might take the defensive player I most covet!!) allowing Adam Carriker to stay inside. This then precipitates Glenn Dorsey going third to the Falcons, Gholston (more likely) or McFadden fourth to the Raiders and the Chiefs still as a wildcard in the whole thing.
UPDATE: It’s worth noting that Mike Florio of PFT thinks this is hogwash. “So we tend to think that this is a ploy from the Dolphins to get Gholston to tell CAA’s Ben Dogra that whatever the Fins are offering had better be accepted. Now.”

I think the rams will take chris long if available. Patrick Kerney (also from UVA) demolished NFC West QBs last year. Leonard Little is old. Also, Chris Long is stuffed full of every sort of desirable intangible and that’s a team that is searching for its identity.

The key for the Jets is to have pick #4 come up with Long and McFadden still available. I’ll gladly take whoever they don’t take. (although the Allen negotiations have messed things up a bit) Another key pick would be if the Falcons do actually take Ryan. That allows 2 of 3 of those Def. guys to fall further (Dorsey, Gholston, and Long) and give another option to KC. This is how I hope it turns out:
1-J.Long
2-Dorsey
3-Ryan (I doubt it)
4-Long
5-Gholston
6-MCFadden.
If the to[ three goes like this than I will breath a sigh of relief knowing that we will get 1 of our top 3 guys. -
I think the Rams will go Dorsey over Chris Long at #2 if the Phins take Jake Long.
I want no part of DMC and I think our best bet is to trade down if Chris Long and Gholston are both off the board by the time we pick. Hopefully Ryan is sitting there when we pick and we can get Baltimore or Carolina to trade up and pick him.

Jim, I agree with You, Mcfadden, though a great player, is not what this team needs and is not whatis going ot get us to playing in the big game in early February

If we add either C. Long or Gholston, our defense would be scary and should jump up to a top 7 defense with the correct scheming.
Giving KC a short field is more important than adding to the already good RB group.

jim, dave and rob…i agree with all 3 of you guys…

Thig is, if we trade down we are probablylooking at the kid from Troy as our 1st pick. That’s 2 cb’s with high drfat picks in back to back years. We may shape up to have the best secondary int he league in a year or2. i think that would be wise, though the #1 guy that i would want is Chris Long, who I don’t thik will be there, but Gholston is the guy i see us getting. Remember gentlemen most importnat of al…
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP!
If you need an example, look to the team we share a stadium with. Pass rush, pass rush, pass rush

i agree that dmc is not our best choice. it’s a luxury we can’t afford. glad common sense is winning the day, so far.

Actually, defense doesn’t necessarily win championships. Here’s how the last few SB teams were ranked in offense and defense (based on FO’s stats):
2007 NYG: 19th Offense, 14th Defense
2007 NE: 1st Off, 8th Def2006 IND: 1st Off, 27th Def
2006 CHI: 18th Off, 2nd Def2005 PIT: 8th Off, 2nd Def
2005 SEA: 3rd Off, 15th Def2004 NE: 4th Off, 6th Def
2004 PHI: 9th Off, 16th DefOn average, teams that have gone to the SB recently are better at offense than defense. You can win either way, and obviously defense is important, but you don’t win by picking lesser players just because they’re on defense. If Tannenbaum thinks DMC is a better prospect than Gholston, he should take DMC. If he thinks Gholston is better, take him.
And by the way, the Giants weren’t a great defensive team for 4 months. They got hot at the right time and played fairy-tale D for 29 days. That doesn’t mean that’s the “right way” to build a consistent winner. Remember, NYG was an underdog each of the four playoff rounds. I’d rather we build a team that can realistically compete for a title every year, and that scares the you-know-what out of our opponents.

Smokescreen alert….believe the opposite of whatever is coming out of a Bill Parcells FO at this time of year.

I am praying that McFadden, Gholston, or Chris Long is there at 6. I don’t like the value of CB’s at 6. McKelvin reminds me too much of Justin Miller. I would rather DRC than McKelvin. If Gholston, McFadden, and Chris Long are off the board, they should trade down with someone who wants Matt Ryan. KC is really confusing me with the whole Jared Allen situation. I think that the KC pick really relies on the Jared Allen trade discussions because if Gholston is there when they pick, they could take him.
