Interesting interview. I found two points interesting and debatable:

First, Boland seems to take it as fact that the Jets are in “win-now” mode. Then, a lot of his draft and team analysis flows from that assumption. I agree with Boland that if the Jets are concerned about winning now, then Chad has to be the QB (it also sounded like Bassett agreed). Because the Jets are concerned with “winning now” Boland was more in the DMc camp because he could pay immediate dividends, take pressure off Chad and give Chad another needed weapon.

Second, I disagree with the notion that if the Jets were to draft Ryan that he would be a rookie starter, which Boland somewhat assumed. Besides DMc (and, IMO, C. Long), every other no. 6 pick candidate would have to ride the pine and learn for a little while. That’s just the reality of the NFL.

What I keep harping on is, if the Jets are in “win-now” mode and keep Chad as QB, then the Jets have to evaluate whether KC should be groomed as the eventual replacement. IMO, having Chad reclaim the starting position is a vote of no confidence in KC’s starting QB abilities. If that’s the case, then the draft is a good place to get the heir apparent. And, whether because of the cap or the front office’s decision, drafting a QB in the first 2 rounds would spell the end of KC…something Boland states is a topic of discussion among the Jets FO, as it should be.

I say a lot of “yeahs” and “uh huhs” type stuff … my sincere opinion is that I don’t think whether it’s Pennington or Clemens matters — but if you are holding a gun to my head, I’m actually more on the Clemens side). I don’t see this as a “win-now” team either, I see it as a “now they can win” type team …

  3. If we look at our contracts with the key players we at least have 2 seasons to win. At least… So Matt Ryan shouldn’t be written completely off.

    Great interview.

  5. I don’t get all this “win now” stuff. Every team wants to win now, the smart ones plan for the future while trying to do so.
