Former Jet Guard/Center Wade Smith was signed by Kansas City Monday. Smith never saw much time on the field but played as a backup for the Jets, mostly taking snaps when Center Nick Mangold needed a play or two off.
Smith provided some depth, but by releasing him and Adrian Jones, it seems a clear indication that the Jets have some severe disparity between their starters and backups. Guys like Clint Oldenburg, Will Montgomery and Jacob Bender might have potential, but are they ready to step in should an injury arise? More specifically, who now becomes Mangold’s backup in a pinch?

… Anthony Clement too

Damien Woody could move to center

Montgomery is an improvement over all of the stiffs the Jets have released. And Bender is a project, but he’s a mammoth with more upside than all of the stiffs the Jets have released. Let’s see what happens in the draft before we start worrying too much about the supposed talent “gap” between the starters and the benchers.

What about Trey Teague? Is he off the roster?

Teague’s all busted up. I think he is still “Officially” a Jets.

Bassett you might have stumble across the FO’s mid round strategy. Pick up OL in rounds 4 and 5.
Oscarfactor, we’re Jet fans. we dont worry about things like that. We expect them to come up and bite us in the a$$!
then the domino effect starts. Who ever is starting in Mangolds place gets pushed back off the line, falling down and rolling unto Jones who was trying to cut out side because the holes not there and wammo! hes out with a high ankle sprain. the apposing defensive start protecting against the pass and (Clemens will be starting of course at this point) start picking off passes at the worse possible time. Sack has his point proven Clemens cant throw ’cause he cant see the field and we should have picked Ryan. But who can argue with the guy, he would be obviously right at that point.
And worse still i would have picked Jones as my second Back on my fantasy team and dont have a decent 3rd Rb because everyone in my league are RB Whores!Jeeze now I’m really concerned about Mangolds backup my fantasy year depends on a good backup…

96- thanks for showing me my largest fear… Sack being completely right about our QB situation.
No offense Sack you certainly have supported your view. I just have a different one.

I’m with Thurdeye, I think that part of the reason they signed Damien Woody is his flexibility, particularly at center.

I hear Adrien Clarke is available….
