Dan Leberfeld is reporting on Jets Confidential that Chad Pennington (whose agent is Tom Condon) might be traded to the Ravens if the Jets pick up Matt Ryan (whose agent is … Tom Condon) at the sixth pick in the draft.
Leberfeld is clear to note that it’s just a rumor and makes the point that in that scenario “the only problem … is where it would leave the Jets in 2008. If the team had Kellen Clemens and Ryan as their top two quarterbacks, they would be very inexperienced at the position.”
Why would that be Condon’s concern? At least his guys are getting paid …
Hat tip to Jeff I for sending the heads up onto me.

What would you expect to get for Chad?
-
aside from not reading to much into the rumor, i defintely wouldn’t read anything into the hypothesized 2d round pick. Lebs does not attribute that to any source, he just says “perhaps” . . . theres no way we get baltimore’s second (39, 40?) straight up for chad. getting baltimores 3d for chard would be impressive. not to mention that we would have happy feet kellen (who i like and think he might develop but at this stage of his career he is what he is) and a rookie . . . not exactly a win now formula.

havins said all that chad to baltimore does make some sense for baltimore, they have personnel that could emphasize chades strenghts (strong rb, te, and possession wrs like d mason), and there defense is aging fast, so the window (if there even is one) is minimal and getting a veteran qb and using the first pick on something else would make some sense.
-
couldn’t get a 2nd for vilma or randy moss, but yes for an aging qb with a bum shoulder?
-
jared allen to vikes is done deal, per schefter.
-
Jonathan,
I agree… I thought you wouldnt be satisfied with a second and wanted a first..
-
im glad this is just a rumor…cuz i really dont want ryan…we helped our QBs and RBs by picking up 4 blockers…faneca, woody, franks and richardson…we need defense…just my thoughts

I just feel much more secure knowing that Chad is on our team. I know that no matter what happens, he will be able to come in and go 12-18 for 170 yds and a TD. He will throw a pick here and there.
I think that we should keep Chad for this year as a back up and work with Clemens. We need to see what Clemens is the man or not. That way, next year we will know what we need in the Draft. Give Kellen a chance, if he doesnt get the job done, then we draft a “franchise” QB next year.
But it would be wise to keep Chad this year as a security blanket so that the whole season doesnt go down the drain if Kellen doesnt work out.
(Hypothetical) Say that we trade Chad this year and draft Matt Ryan. Kellen Clemens will start the season and he ends up winning 10 games . He looked very impressive and might be our franchise QB…..
What do we do with Ryan next year then?????
-
naj…
thats the situation the browns are in now…
-
agree it sounds alot like an agent generated rumor to help try get his clients paid.
-
Exactly..
thats why I dont think its a smart move. We should be a little patient and wait till next year to make a decision on a QB.
-
Competent NFL starting quarterbacks are worth second round picks, especially when they’re only 32. I don’t think that would be out of line at all.
-
Actually, what I’ve been hearing is that the Jets are talking about trading up to number two for Ryan, and then would move Pennington. If the Jets are indeed going up, I can’ see it being for Long or Gholston or McFadden. I’m not a huge Ryan guy, but if you’re going to be giving up the money and moving to the #2 overall, it’s hard to see how you could do it for any position but quarterback.
-
seanmac, if Chad were traded, and Ryan drafted, would you expect KC to be the starter (I’m asking because everyone knows what I think)?
-
i crack up at people who say clemens has happy feet and/or no pocket presence. what is a guy supposed to do when he has 0.5 seconds to get rid of the ball, his starting WR tandem was together for exactly 1 play the games he started, and the jets had no bona-fide 3rd receiver, let alone one that was ready to step in to be the replacement number 2. no QB can create things out of thin air.
let’s put the guy behind a line that can give him some time and a few weapons. one thing’s for sure — the guy can flat rip it and made some sick passes last year.
-
sack…
i think KC will play his a$$ off like anderson did to quinn in clevland…lolol…then we’ll be stuck paying ryan millions for sitting on the bench…
-
I would expect there to be a training camp battle and I expect Clemens would win, particularly if Ryan held out, which seems like a distinct possibility. If Ryan was able to beat Clemens out in camp despite Clemens’ built-in advantages (his experience on the team, his familiarity with the offense and his teammates), I’d be impressed. But as I said, I wouldn’t expect it.
-
jeff i, i agree, many of KC’s passes made me sick last year.
dakar, Anderson, to me, is just a flat out superior QB talent over KC, and being 6-6 helps…lol
-
Ryan won’t hold out; you can bank on that; won’t happen. Why? The Jets would’ve just traded Pennington for a new face of the franchise, and after doing Condon a solid with Chad, Condon won’t f*** with Tannenbaum. That deal will be done well before training camp.
I think Ryan would beat KC out, but I’m not sure Mangini would throw Ryan to the wolves immediately. However, each 1st round pick chosen during this regime has started from day 1.
-
Kellen was one of the top QB prospects coming out of college.. They said he was a potential top 10 pick had he not been insured his senior year in Oregon.
Give the kid a chance because the situation that Dakar is talking about is quite possible and will tie up millions of cap space to sit on the bench. Not too sure if thats the direction that we want to head in.
Whats the problem with waiting till next year to draft a QB? There will be better prospects next year anyway. Play Kellen and see what he can do with a good o line a a good D. I saw flashes of stardom from him in Baltimore so that gives me hope that he has something.
-
SackDance99,
You are making a big assumption that Ryan can beat out Clemens and it can be very costly if you are wrong. Just wait till next year for a QB. We might not need one by then.
-
Najy, if there is a franchise QB in the draft next year and that prospect is better than Ryan (to me, those are both huge assumptions), this candidate will go top 5. Do you think the Jets will have a top 5 pick next year? If so, the next coach and GM will probably draft that QB. Also, Clemens was by no means a top QB candidate in 2006, he went in the 2nd round because Young, Leinart and Cutler were all rated much more highly. I think Ryan is far more talented than KC and won’t ride pine, unless the Jets decide that would be best for him, like Coughlin did for Eli in 2004.
-
I’ll just say that if this is going to happen, I’d rather it happens now to give the team a chance to lock down Ryan before the draft starts. If Ryan isn’t signed by draft day, I would expect a lengthy holdout. The recipe just screams it- the team loses all its leverage by showing how much they wanted him with the trade, the number one pick just signed a below market deal, and of course Ryan is a quarterback. I would be very surprised if he was actually signed on time.
-
seanmac, you didn’t believe when I said that Moss would be re-signed by the Pats for less money than he could’ve gotten on the open market and I am just as certain that Ryan wouldn’t be a holdout. After last year’s Revis debacle and the fact that drafting Ryan would change the face of the franchise (and trading Chad would add valuable cap space), I think signing Ryan early is a lead pipe cinch. Whether he starts day 1 is, to me, the more uncertain scenario.
-
It’s not the same situation as the Browns at all. They can trade Quinn with a manageable cap hit, whereas if you take Ryan at 2, you would be facing about a 15m cap hit after the first season.
-
A competent quarterback can throw out patterns without getting his receivers killed.
-
SackDance99,
Yea, he was a second rounder in 2006 because he was injured his senior year in Oregon.
We all know what happens when you give a rookie QB the start from the get go… We all know that you do not do that because only bad things happen.
If you want to get Ryan, then you get rid of Kellen and keep Chad for this year so he can start the season and maybe Ryan can take over towards the end. OR something like that.
No point to get Ryan and keep Kellen. Either (Ryan and Chad) or (Kellen and Chad). I dont think it would be too wise to have to young QBs on the team with no veteran and no experience and I dont think it would be wise to tie up all our money in 3 qbs either.
JUST WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR SO WE CAN GET A BETTER PICTURE OF WHAT WE NEED. HAVE YOU NO HOPE IN KELLEN?
-
I don’t believe this for a second. No way do they trade up for Ryan (who could be there at 6 anyway) – he just isn’t worth that kind of money. Smokescreen so that when he falls to 6, all trade partners are “sure” that the Jets want him and offer up good trade value.
-
Draft Ryan and trade Clemens for a 2nd round pick.
There is an obvious dearth of QBs in this draft and the Jets have 2 (CP & KC) that could start for any of these teams (such as the Ravens) right now. A classic supply-and-demand situation.
This accomplishes an upgrade at the QB-of-the-future position and allows the Jets to pick a CB or WR, or even package it together with some lower picks to get back into the first round.
Still, all things considered, I favor trading down. Unless its Long we’re talking about instead of DMcF or Ryan.
-
Sack,
Condon represented Quinn, who should have been thankful for being taken in the first round at all. Instead, he was a lengthy holdout, as was Russell at the top of the draft. The players themselves might not want to hold out, but the agents are the ones who control the situations, and there’s no way Condon wouldn’t try to break the bank by getting a) a bigger deal than Long and possible b) a bigger deal than Russell. And there’s no way the team would bend to that if they had a starting quarterback already on the roster in Clemens. I’d love to be proven wrong in that scenario, but I would be very worried. As I said, the best thing would be to make the move as soon as possible and to nail down a deal before the draft. But that’s if this move is actually going to be made, and I doubt it will be. It makes sense for the Rams, though, particularly if they have McFadden as the top player on their board as they are rumored.
-
I agree with Sack Dance, if Ryan’s who they are set on, move KC. he has more value being so young and CP can help teach the young guy. i think Chad has another solid year left in him and then they can gradually let Ryan take over. Having 2 young guys means more years of trouble ahead for us.

a 2nd rounder for Chad? what are you, new?
