Jared Allen Deal Has Adverse Effects
Ka-boom … it’s as if millions of voices of Jets fans suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced … (shut up, Obi-Wan)
Adam Schefter of NFL Network has reported that the Chiefs just traded Jared Allen to the Vikings for their first-round pick (No. 17) in the 2008 draft and both third-round (Nos. 73 & 82) selections. Talk about overspending!! Are the Vikes really one player away?
When you consider the Chiefs previous draft picks so far in the early going, (Nos. 5, 35, and 66) the team now has six slots in the first 82, which will likely allow them to move around and grab the players they think are best suited to their club. Still folks are openly wondering about the talent level of this draft, so whether or not adding all those picks in this draft remains to be seen if it was the right thing.
Jared Allen will now get a reported six-year, $74 million deal, with $31 million in guaranteed money, thus surpassing Dwight Freeney.
So what does this mean for the Jets? Basically, it means that the Chiefs are now dangerous. Up until this point, it was assumed that the Chiefs weren’t well placed to pick via Best Player Available, and would likely stretch for a need with a player like Ryan Clady. Now, even should a DE/OLB like Gholston or Chris Long slide past the Raiders, the Chiefs could well be in the running to take that player.

Damn, with this trade I just can’t see a scenario where either Long or Gholston are available at six.
I think we’d be best served by trying to hightail it back to the teens if possible, perhaps dealing with one of the teams keen on moving up to get Ellis or Ryan.
The dumbest move by the Chiefs would be drafting at 5 a player to replace the guy you just traded because of cost issues…the no. 5 pick will get Jared Allen-type money. Paying a rookie, like C. Long or Gholston, the same money to replace an established NFL player is foolish. Oh, Harm is the coach…never mind!
but at the least you gain age and draft picks … allen wasn’t old, but they invested a late pick into him, didn’t pay the guy and then turn that into three picks in the top 100 … not bad for a days work …
Looks like were going to be stuck with Ryan at #6, we have to make a trade happen hopefully with the ravens and take whoever we feel is the top CB, and get an extra pick in the hopefully 2nd rd, we can’t justify using our top pick on a QB
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3361271 Seahawks cut Shawn Alexander….
I for one am not scared. I believe the Chiefs will have no effect where the Jets go with the 6th pick. That is because the Raiders will take Gholston at 4,the Chiefs will either address the offensive line with Albert or Clady trade down with the Ravens so they get Ryan. Or the Chiefs stay put and grab Ellis. Either scenerio the Jets still get thier man in Darren McFadden.
I think the best move is to keep it simple and stupid:
If any of the 3 DL guys falls to 6th, take him, or the better choice.
If MR, or DMC comes up at 6th, trade him.
There are just more negatives on either MR or DMC than any of the D people. So should avoid potential bust. Remember at 6th, we are still picking best talent, rather than needs.
Also must not be tempted to move up, we are already short of a 3rd.
Just like in 1996 for the Giants , the Jets will get screwed vin this draft. Just think if you had lost the chiefs game. As far as Herm edwards goes and I am not a fan of his, but Eric M is on the hot seat. he has gotten a free ride by the press (as has pennington,) and will be canned if they are 6-10 or worse…
The Jets will talk about how they considered all the options and are really happy that they got the player they wanted all along after they trade down.
I still think McKelvin is surest best pick we could make .. Revis and this shut down corner on each side .. even with a 3-4 we could play man to man and/or blitz Rhodes a lot knowing the corners are tight ..
trading down – everyone wants it but I doubt Balt or any team wants to trade down w/us ..
i guranteed yar that mcfadden will be sitting there at #6
or less the cowboys pull a miracle?
McFadden probably will be there at 6 i think the best pick for the jets would be gholston. The guy is just a beast, line him up opposite Pace with Jenkins eating up blockers and Revis and Rhodes behind him and we have a defense. I know t sounds cliche but look at the giants, we have to rush the passer and pace cant do it all by himself.
