Rumor Mongering: Jets Talking to Rams about Swapping No. 2 & No. 6
John Clayton has noted on his ESPN Insider Blog that the Jets have talked to the Rams about moving to No. 2.
Rams on the clock: Now that Long is locked in as the No. 1 pick, the Rams have to start getting serious about their plans at No. 2. LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey is their top-rated player and would be a perfect fit for their defense. The Rams have a solid trade offer from New Orleans, which has the No. 10 pick. According to a source, the Rams have exchanged some trade ideas with the New York Jets, who have the No. 6 pick. If the second scenario came to fruition, the Rams could move backward and take defensive end Chris Long. The simple concept, though, would be to start working on a deal with Dorsey and try to get him signed.
How exactly do the Rams know they are getting Chris Long at six, and for whom exactly are the Jets trading up? My first thought is that it would be Matt Ryan, since the Rams would most likely take Dorsey, leaving the Falcons to draft Ryan at No. 3. All the same, it’s a thought that gives me chills. I thought this offseason was about setting up a team in which the Quarterback didn’t need to be the centerpiece, and now the Jets are considering a move to make Matt Ryan be just that. Go figure.
If that’s the case, Ryan better sure as hell be the guy for the next 10+ years, because if he isn’t, the Jets are back to square one again in three years. I saw him flutter passes in a climate controlled dome in Chestnut Hill with my own eyes. I have to admit I’m somewhat giddy, and somewhat concerned.
To make this work points-wise on the new chart, it seems to me like the Jets would give up their first, second and a late rounder, while they would get the Rams first and third rounders.
Also, please remember, the Jets are a “leave no stone unturned” franchise and they always talk with everyone. If you’ll remember, they spoke to the Saints about the No. 2 the Saints asked the Jets about the No. 2 — which they listened to, but nothing more — in 2006 for Reggie Bush, but obviously never pulled the trigger.
Should this scenario play out … who do you think the Jets would be most likely to take at No. 2 overall? Would you want it to be Matt Ryan or someone else?

I hope this is simply just another rumor. If the Jets traded up for Matt Ryan I would be devistated. My stomach dropped when I read this post.
Have faith in tangini….. I know it’s hard not to to wonder what will be but if they are the ones who have been working out and interviewing Ryan then they must see something special…. I want DMC but I have faith in the FO
I dont think they are trading up to get infornt of ATL. I think they are trading in order to get infront of Oakland. Im pretty sure that ATL is content with their spot and are not looking to trade out because if they do trade with the jets the chiefs may select Ryan. I think the Jets are trading up to grab Gholston or Long because it looks clear, based on the Jared Allen trade, that the Rams, Raiders and Chiefs are all in the hunt for Chris Long and Gholston. The jets are doing everything in their power to not get screwed out of Long Gholston or Mcfadden.
I really hope its not ryan.
Ugh, I don’t like this rumor. But I have faith in Tangini so we shall see.
the football gods only know.
Jets already have a heady QB with no arm… Chad Pennington. Besides, Jets off season moves point to a win now strategy, not a three-year rebuilding process around a franchise quarterback… which Ryan is not (yet)… And, Kellen could become given ample time and an offensive line plus playmakers.
There’s no reason for Jets to move up. They will wait at six and hope for Long, Gholston or McFadden to fall or trade down to any takers should Ryan still be available.
If we pick Ryan he will be a bust… Just cause we picked him… Im not a fan of taking QBs high in the draft… I think we should go with DMC or Long… If we had the choice of both I would say Long… He just seems like he has the drive to WIN…
Well, they did only offer a 4th to move for Bush, but ugh.
I doubt it, last night on Path to the draft, Charley Casserly said that when they had the number 1 and Reggie Bush could have been the pick they called the NYJ and asked if they would be interested in trading up and he said the NYJ said ” ‘Sure, what are you gonna give US if we do’ … true story”. Nobody wants the top couple of picks, they hamstring franchises with the salary cap and God forgive you if the pick is a bust.
thanks PMD, I “misremembered” that!
I am not so much concerned about who they draft if we move up but rather having to give up multiple picks in order to do so. We have a few more areas to address and we need the picks to do so.
Ughh..Anyone but Matt Ryan…I find it hard to believe we would pass on multiple 1st QB’s in years past and settle for this joker from BC
I can hardly see through the smoke…This is an awsome tatic, move to 2 but take Long or create enough buzz for Ryan you clean someone’s clock for the 6th . Cough..
Smoke, that what this inquiry is, if it is even true! I think the jets are just probing around but they will not give up 1st and 2nd round picks to move up when they have one that is still unproven waiting in the wings….
NO WAY…
I’m with 57jetsblitz — I’m sitting back and waiting until all the smoke clears before I let myself go crazy with all this.
I hope the Jets don’t trade up for Ryan, I would even be disappointed if they took him at 6. If they were to trade up to #2, I would think it would be for Chris Long. I am still hoping the draft goes:
2-Dorsey
3-Ryan
4-Long
5-Gholston
6-McFadden
As I stated earlier if pick 2 and 3 go as I stated we would be guaranteed 1 of our top 3 choices.
If they wanted Chris Long and could substitute DRobb and maybe a LB or CB instead of our #2, I would not barf.
But, personally, I think we lack the chips to move up without doing more harm than good, especially in what is rumored to be a good draft year.
harlan
Harlan, I don’t think they are going to want D-Rob when they can draft Dorsey, especially with the salries, it might not work out. I hink taking Ryan would be a huge mistake. Look at Brady Quinn, he was a highdraft pick and then Derek Anderson blew up and now he’s wasting away on the bench. Kellen Clemens could do the same thing as Anderson. If they move up, I hope it’s simply to lock up Long or Gholston. But let’s hope this is just a rumor. It always seems to be a rumor.
we only have 6 draft picks this yr. the jets should stay put and let the draft come to them
you know i trust the jets if they trade up for ryan they must like something about him. you got to remember they have looked at alot more tape then anyone here and there alot smarter. who knows maybe matt ryan will become a great player. ill tell you one thing im not happy with our qb situation as is so i wont be mad if they think this is the guy who can help us win.
I say that they stay at 6 and see who is there. I’d be happy with DMC, Ghoulston, C. Long or even Ryan (in the event that Ryan was the only guy, I’d be content with adding add’l picks in a trade down).
I think Ghoulston may be overhyped and Ryan is getting beaten up a bit here unjustly.
No one in this draft is worth giving up our 2nd round pick, to move up. I would move to #8 to pick up a 2nd rounder or two 3rd rounders but, if they move up, I would be sick to my stomach, like Mike G.
They’re not trading up. Their strategy is to stockpile picks, not trade them away (last year notwithstanding – they won’t do what they did last year tow years in a row). Maybe Ryan will be good but I don’t see them pulling the trigger, spending the extra money and giving away the picks to find out.
No one has mentioned the possibility of trading up only to trade back down. They’ve been throwing a lot of smoke up about Ryan, McFadden, Long and Gholston. Jumping up to two could throw some last-minute panic into draft rooms around the league and cause some GM to do something stupid to get back ahead of them. Wouldn’t put it past them.
wen i read this article i it sounds a little confusing and doesnt make any sense….i think if the jets traded up to the rams spot we would be taking chris long and not matt ryan…..and i think dorsey will fall to 6 to the rams…..that makes the most logical sense to me…. any one agree?
Ryan at 2? please just put me out of my misery now.
if we get the second pick they’ll take either Chris Long or Darren McFadden in my opinion. DMC has visited the Jets several times in the last few weeks so I feel like they want to move in front of Oakland to ensure getting him. However, Chris Long is another probable Oakland pick so the Jets may look to steal him as well. I don’t think Dorsey is on their radar, however Gholston and Ryan are possibilities as well. But, I don’t think they’d go with one of those guys if the other two options are there. If the trade is made here is my Mock:
MIA – J Long
NYJ – DMC (or C Long)
ATL – Dorsey
OAK – C Long (or DMC)
KC – Ryan/Albert
STL – Gholston
This definitely seems like a tactic, if Ryan slips past Atlanta, to put pressure on the Panthers and those other teams behind the Ravens that need/want a QB. Those teams need to believe that the Jets are seriously considering taking Ryan if the Jets are going to be able to trade down out of the 6 spot so another team can take Ryan. Otherwise, those non-Ravens teams wanting Ryan would just trade with Belicheat and save some value. A similar argument can be made for the ostentatious (for the Jets) way in which they have been showing their interest in McFadden.
From what ive read around the internet and have heard on TV. If theyd be trading up to Pick 2 it would Be for Run DMC, not Matt Ryan. Theyve had RunDMC in for 2 more visits this week.
Raiders will not take Long because of relationship with his Dad. Rams and Falcons won’t be taking Long either, so the only worry we have, if we want Long, is to beat the Chiefs to him by trading with Raiders. Why trade 6 to 2 when you can trade 6 to 4 at a cheaper price? I personally think that Long is the best pick for the Jets. He not only has the pedigree of great genes, but will prove to be even better than his dad, because he had the benefit of all of his experience. The heck with everyone else – - – Do what is necessary, and GET LONG
Matt Ryan is the next Ken O’Brien and would set the JETS back 10 years. DMC is the man.
DMC! DMC! DMC! DMC!
..just a preview of what jet fans will be cheering on saturday
