UPDATE 2: I was pressed for time this evening and admittedly slapped up something. This is a little more clear and has better information …
ESPN’s John Clayton just confirmed on TV that the Jets have traded Dewayne Robertson to Denver.
- The biggest part here is that Robertson’s contract of over $6.8 million in salary and $3 million roster bonus due in June slides off the books
- This would mean money to extend disgruntled TE Chris Baker or other players should they choose.
- When it comes to contracts, the Jets don’t have to worry so much about who they draft where …
- Adam Schefter is reporting that the Jets will receive a conditional late round pick in 2009
What? The laundry bins were unavaible to ship from Denver? I thought it would be two late picks originally, but with the lack of interest, the Jets did whatever they could to get him off the books … for something … P.R.-wise it would look awful though to outsiders. The big bit of news though is that the contract is off the books and they got something for it.
Thanks to D-Rose for the text message and Seth H. for the email. More as we know it.

I think if you put on NFLN Adam Schefter says the picks are conditional in 2009… can’t find that anywhere else though.
-
i heard we got a 3rd round pick for him great news!!!
-
MB, where did you hear that?
-
If we got a 3rd round pick for him then Shannahan should fire himself because he fired the old GM for wanting to give up a 4th and 5th.
-
Break out the beer! Great news, no matter what the deal.
-

“Undisclosed pick or picks”. Well, that clears that up. x_x
-
Just heard on Sirus NFL Channel-
Late round conditional pick in ’09.
-
They can give us a conditional pick in the NBA draft for all I care – we got him off our cap, that’s all that matters. Happy happy day!
-
careful now, we fell into this with the vilma trade, turned out to be much better than initially reported
-
cimini is reporting its a 4 and a 5.
-
a 4 and a 5 sounds right. that has some value; if tannenbaum wanted to give drob to denver for less he could have done so a month ago (if he traded him for less he flinched; if he traded him for a 4 and 5 shannahan flinched).
-
where is cimini reporting this? his blog only cites the espn report??
-
watch him dominate in denver =)
-
Who cares what the deal is!!!!! That piece of crap is off our team!!
I am sick of seeing him getting man handeled at the line of scrimmage! Thank God he is out of here.
CHEERS TO EVERYONE (as i sip my beer)!!!
-
rocky mountain news is calling it as late round pick in 08 and a conditional pick in 09. come to think of it, that makes the most sense of anything ive heard yet. middle of the road between the cincy package and the schedfter report of one conditional 09. I would bet a 5 this year and as high as a 3 next year.
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/apr/24/robertson-broncos-looks-be-done-deal/
-
So instead of drafting Ty Warren and McGahee/LJ, the Jets are left with a 4 and 5 approximately. Well done, Herm and Bradway, well done.
-
On a side note, if this is a conditional deal similar to Vilma’s, you have to love the creative on the part of Tannenbaum. I am under the assumption playing time/performance benchmarks can turn Vilma anywhere from a 4 to a 1. What GM would turn down a deal where if the player is a Pro-bowler, you give up a 1 or 2, and if the player sucks you only give up a four?? Its brilliant on both ends, and a great way to unload a player like Vilma who has a high ceiling, without getting hammered if he turns out no good.
BRILLIANT!!!
-
To be fair Anthony, Herm and Bradway were drafting for THEIR regime, which ran a 4-3, which DRob was maturing into an excellent player for, it usually takes NTs several years to acclimate to the NFL and just when DRob had he was forced into a system that did not suit his skills, no need to dance and pee on his grave.
-
I agree with Anthony. I’m happy that D-Rob is off the books and all, but what a waste of a pick.
-
Sec108, excellent may be a strong word. That is 100% true, and we can get into how detremental it is to change course twice in a short time, but we will leave that for another day. But you are right, Robertson was a NICE player. I cursed at the time for them trading the picks, and I was just a baby then. Now, I probably would have jumped off a cliff.
-
How about this angle, before I take off for the day– If they instead take two players, who end up being good picks, the team is decent and Herm never leaves. Then we are stuck with mediocre teams for another 5 years and never find ‘mangeniou’ and tannenbaum.
I love Dewayne!!!!
Also, the guy didn’t bitch and moan and seemed to play pretty hard all the time, so he has that going for him.
-
yea a friend called to tell me it was a 3rd but that is too good to be true
-
late round conditional 2009, as per PFT.com
-
Anthony, fair enough, I just didn’t think it was fair to characterize Robertson as any kind of villian in this, and believe me I’m glad it worked out the way it did, I’d much have our current FO and HC than Bradway and Herm, and at the time I agree, bad idea to trade the picks, Bradway admitted it was a reaction to the Redskins raid and the news that Josh Evans was going to be suspended, proof positive he didn’t have what it took to run a team.
-
Definitely had to ship him, need the cap space for the draft and some inevitable extensions.
I like the deal alot, thank goodness it could get done, was very worried following the failed physical with Detroit.
That being said, the Jets definitely have pie on their face with this one. We got sucked into the Pats game, traded all the way up and took a guy who clearly could not fit this system based mostly on size.
In the end though, this had to be done, let’s wait for official word on the pick details.
-
Good move to get anything for this guy.
He was developing into an “okay” DT in the 4-3… I remember one year where he seemed to be coming into his own… was never the centerpiece of a great defense even with Ellis and Abraham next to him and Vilma behind him.
-
Great move, clearing up space. I just want to point out that Dewayne Robertson is A LOT better than he is given credit for. Yeah he got pushed around the line of scrimmage as a 3-4 NT, but thats not his position! As a 4-3 DT he was well above average. I expect him to be a pretty dominant force in Denvers Defense. Not to say it wasnt necessary for us to trade him, because it obviously was.
-
sec108, again, your right. The guy showed up, shut his mouth, and played hard. He didn’t make the Jets draft him at 4, or trade the draft for him. Alot of times the players involved become the scape goats, i.e Herschel Walker. Its not his fault, but the fact is he was a decent player for Herm, quite ineffective under Mangini, and needed to be moved. It is what it is. Don’t feel to bad for him, I think he made out alright in the end. And remember, “[Dewayne Robertson] won’t pay your rent”.
-
the cimini post changed. it originally had the 4 & 5 when i first checked.
-
Ahh what could have been.
regardless of the old regimes plans of mice and Herm, he was a good 4-3 pickup at the time and it looked like the right thing to do. he had great speed and pop. but just not into two offensive lineman, kept getting blown back.
Bottom line he’s expendable at this point/our 3-4 system.
lets see
1. 8 Mill off Cap-Check
2. got at least some thing- Check
3. Wont be missed because of Jenkins- CheckOK this looks good.
-
Herm was a great coach….
-
C’mon Chris…D-Rob was not a bad pick. Look at what the Saints did that year grabbing Jon Sullivan…not even the Pats could resurrect that guy! I thought it was the right move at the time, it wasn’t like Chicago made out grabbing Michael Haynes, and with C-Mart in town, we weren’t grabbing LJ or McGahee as others posted before. Hind sight is 20-20, but D-Rob would’ve been a solid pick if A: we kept a 4-3 defence, and B: his knees didn’t resemble Broadway Joe’s.
-
now all we have to do is trade chad sissy throwing pennington and his 6mil cap # to the ravens and we will have14mil..under the salary cap and thats what you call a off season robbery!!!
-
HOZ the JET…that’s an awful lot of Number ones you’re kicking to the curb…Vilma, D-Rob, Chad, if i didn’t know better it might look like the FO has no clue…heh-heh
-
the front office at that time had a diffrent vision now its about winning building a team up and still having 14 mil under the cap i would think the fo.is geniuses?
-
This is great news…I love the freed cap space and Robertson will get a fresh start in his natural position. Its good for both parties…
Honestly they can cut or trade Baker now too for all I care. A few hundred yards and only a couple touchdowns does NOT warrant a new contract just yet. Let’s see him step his game up this year on a more talented team before any extensions/raises are dished out. Make him trade bait on draft day and get a mid-late first day pick or something. I just don’t like how he and his agent (or Pete Kendall’s agent I should say) are handling this situation. I like Chris Baker, I think he is a GOOD player, but let’s be honest he’s no Gates or Gonzo, not even remotely close. Maybe the soon to be Shockey-less Giants will want him for the 95th pick in Rd. 3?
Just speculating and voicing opinion here – if they can come to an agreement with Baker I would love to have him on the team next year…
-
…with that 95th pick we could draft TE Jermichael Finley of Texas – a great prospect with a high ceiling…
-
D-ROB was a huge bust, glad they are rid of him. As for Bradway and Herm, they traded a 1st round pick for DOUG JOLLEY. Enough said, I still cannot believe that happened
-
njay…
i agree with you on alot of things…but to say loser herm was a great coach isn’t 1 of them…the guy was and still is a moron…he took a well conditioned team and shaped them into a bunch of sissies…i hated the day he was hired and loved the day he was dumped onto kc…him and bradway were the absolute worst… its funny to say but, thinking of him angers me…just my thoughts…
-
right on dakar….
herm was a great speaker….and an awful coach. anyone with a 90 year old as a “clock assistant” needs major help. and yeah, we didnt know trading up for Drob would end up like this…but yes, that moron bradway traded a 1st rd pick in the 20′s?? for doug jolley. possibly the dumbest trade in our history.
i dont share ur anger when i think of them however…..but i laugh a bit. -
for the millionth time, the trade was for jolley and a number two; not a late number one for jolley straight up. It was still a bad deal, but not to the extent those are portraying it.
-
Just heard the Jets waived Alvin Banks (sorry Bassett).
-
I know this isn’t the popular sentiment, but I liked D-Rob. The guy was playing out of position for the last two seasons and was obviously playing on a crappy knee. He’s a warrior, and I hope for his sake he does well in Denver.
-
so now the ? is when the jets is going to trade pennington thats 6 more mill. off the cap should we say flacco or henne in rd.2???/
lets go jets jets jets!!!
-
Thanks Laim. So many Jets fans have butchered the Jolley trade — it was bad, but not as bad as they seem to think (1st round) — value for difference in picks (dropped from 23 to about 48) was equal to mid 2nd round pick
-
HOZ THE JET… I am sorry to inform you that the teams starting QB is Chad, the sissy QB who was playing without a rotator Cuff so that he would not let you down!
-
At this point of the offseason what does a lot of cap space do for you? Maybe snag a June 1st cut but there really were not any last year because of the cap increase. I think Baker has the best hands on the team and they should extend him because he wont cost what a gates and Gonzo cost.
Good Luck D-Rob… I’m sure he will join a rich tradition of former Jets making the probowl on other teams…
-
Do I see a starting QB pool in the not so distant future?
-
Najy are you rooting for a different Jets team then us? is there a “jets” in another sport or something, because I never know what your referring to with your posts? Herm was a good coach? Ok.
-
Herm had a Parcells built team. I loved him as a person but he was always out coached, clock work, poor personal moves. OK at best and in the end only worth a 4th rd pick.
-
Good move that needed to be made. DRob and Vilma simply didn’t fit, and both have lingering health issues. No sense in looking back at what could’ve been in previous drafts. Our FO is looking forward and that’s exactly what they need to be doing.
-
Just head the news boys. Hallelujah!!! Gotta love Tannenbaum realizing mistakes were made and at least being man enough to cut his losses and be ready to move on. Jenkins will have us saying Dwayne who?!?!? Now sign Gholston and we’ll look like a playoff team.
-
D-ROB wasn’t a bust. Not. Even. Close. A bust is someone like Akili Smith who, despite given ample opportunities still sucks and is no longer in the league.
Cut their losses? D-ROB is a 3 technique DT not a NT. They could’ve traded him 2 years ago when he had 1st day value or even last year when he obviously didn’t fit this SYSTEM.
Why is it that Mangini’s mentor can take anyone off the scrap heap and turn them into a player? Mangini can’t even get his first round picks to perform. Thomas. Vilma. Robertson. Brick. Mangold. The jury is still out of Revis.
Did the FO even draft a NT the last two years?
-
They weren’t Mangini’s picks. His mentor doesn’t take many scraps either.
-
Thomas, Vilma, Drob were not Mangini’s first round picks. I at least give Drob and Thomas credit for trying to fit in the 3-4, Vilma hated it from the beginning and it showed on the field as he was tossed around like a rag doll. Even before that Vilma, wasnt that great, he could tackle but couldnt get to the QB. To say that Mangold has not performed is insane. I can understand maybe Brick, but you will see how much he improves and the O line improve this year. Revis is going to be a shutdown Pro Bowl corner. Yeah maybe they didnt trade Drob at the right time, but give the FO some credit for cutting there losses from the old regime. I think Drob will excel in Denver, he just doesnt fit the 3-4 system. This clears some cap space for the draftees, cant wait till Sat.
-
here’s my favorite mock yet. this one actually has the jets and pats involved in a draft day swap of first rounders. priceless.
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-spw-draft25apr25,0,6045339.story
from the l.a. times!
-
People who think D-Rob was a bust don’t know what they’re talking about. He played every game for five seasons. Five-year starters aren’t busts in a world where Charles Rogers, Mike Williams, Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf and Jamal Reynolds exist. And Robertson was arguably the best front seven player the team had over the last two seasons until David Harris came in.
He was a good player who was a bad fit on the defense and who has degenerating knees. That’s not a bust.
-
Wow, it’s amazing how people can rip on a new front office’s picks prior to the third year. Let’s see, Mangold is universally seen as outliving his expectations, D’ Brick is considered a hung jury for now. Revis and Harris ARE STUDS, and will continue to be. Leon is a great cog for a 4th rounder. Brad Smith could be a role player. I see a solid beginning, and anyone with a realistic lens in their eye would see something similar

heres what belachick did for sullivan…
2003 — New Orleans Saints: Johnathan Sullivan, DT, Georgia
The Saints actually moved up to get to this spot, but they didn’t receive much of a return for their investment. Sullivan played three largely forgettable seasons with the Saints, then was traded to New England (for WR Bethel Johnson) in 2006 but never played for the Patriots…
belachick did absolutly nothing…he couldn’t get this scrap heap to even make the team…lolol…also this is a definition of a BUST…just my thoughts…lolol
-
heres the rest of the story on sullivan…
Back in June 2006, police picked Sullivan up in Georgia and charged him with a seatbelt violation, running stop signs, playing loud music and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. He is not longer in the National Football League.lolol…what a loser…
-
Dakar,
“lolol” why do you repeat out loud? Laugh out loud out loud. Hmmm, so are you laughing out loud?
Seanmac agreed, DRob is not a bust, at least not in the sense that the phrase is commonly used. He is a solid football player who played out of position for much of his career to date (but still was a starter during that period) and might have a career threatening physical condition. If that is the postscript on DRob then he failed to meet expecations for a 4 (especially one you trade up to get) but is not a bust.
Before the draft there are always those who unexpectedly rise and fall at the top. I’m going to make a prediction. Gholston is the one who falls. I think execs are getting smart enough to see the film on this guy and figure out that he is way too risky for top 5 and maybe even top ten money. Having said that, if he falls to 9 (and ellis and dorsey are off the boards) i have to imagine the bengals will take him. But i don’t think the jets or pats will take him (as has been widely speculated) and think he has the best shot of falling out of the top 10 out of this “locks”.
-
P in CO,
Belichick doesn’t take guys off the scrap heap and convert them into stars, especially on defense. Teams didn’t generally run a 3-4 when he was building the Pats up. Tampa’s Cover 2 was the rage. He had no competition to find players that fit his system. Things are different now. So many teams are running a 3-4 that it is harder to find the players.I for one think Mangini and Tannenbaum are doing a pretty good job at finding value players that fit their system, especially last year when they traded up to get Revis and Harris in a very weak draft for the 3-4
-
hey liam…. here is the jolley trade:
In exchange for Jolley, who started 26 games in three seasons, the Raiders received the Jets’ first-round choice, the 26th pick overall. Oakland had been without a first-rounder, having traded it to Minnesota as part of the package to acquire wide receiver Randy Moss from the Vikings.
In addition to Jolley, the Jets got a second-round pick this year, the 47th selection overall, and a pair of sixth-round picks. The Raiders also got a seventh-round pick from the Jets. Oakland still owns its own second-round pick, the 38th overall.SO….we still GAVE UP our first round pick, #26….for that loser.
yes we got oaks 2nd back, and two 6′s and gave back a 7th…
but we still traded our first rd pick for doug jolley…..and fell back from the 26th pick to the 47th.weak trade….ya think?
-
so u might say it was the right “value”…losing 21 spots for jolley. BUT most people would agee…that even at that time…jolley was a C tight end. NO team would drop from 26 to 47 for a C-RAP tight end…
bradway thought he would work out…and he was wrong. and at the time he was wrong, before it he was wrong, and he has been proven wrong several times. he was an awful GM…..period. -
liam
does lolol bother you…and if does i dont see why…and yes i was laughing at that moron sullivan…
klecko…i agree 100%…bradway and edwards were god awful…but at least bradway is good at his job now…where as edwards is still a moron…
-

if long’s name was there insted of gholston i would have voted for long…these are the players that are expected to be there for us at 6…
-
Could you imagine the media cry if the Giants had made this kind of trade…
After all, the Jets gave up two 1st’s in order to get DBust..
The Giants would have been crucified…..
-
I honestly don’t think dewayne will be all that productive in Denver, he’s simply not all that good. Also, I would’ve gladly taken a couple tickets to six-flags if I was tannenbaum for him.
-
The Jets traded two #1s and a #4 to move up to draft Robertson. As a result, they could not prevent the Patriots from drafting Dan Klecko in Round 4.
-
Pelzman at NorthJersey.com is reporting that the conditional pick for DRob could be as high as a #2 next year if he plays enough. Can’t wait to get the real scoop on this – so funny how every time, they leak a little info that doesn’t sound like a great deal (although getting the cap savings IS great) and then when the actual details are revealed, we are all so much happier. You’d think we’d all see the pattern by now, but we seem to fall for it every time!
-
dakar…
You are right… He was not a great Coach. I JUST WISH SHE WAS THO. I was on youtube and I was watching his “you play to win” speech! It was great! That was a classic speech man. I dont care what anyone says.
But as far as game planning, he sucked! BUt I loved him and at the time, I thought he was great.!! HAHA..
-
I was just reminessing on some of his speeches and antics. He was as dumb as bricks but I am loyal to him. I believed in him at the time, but I didnt realized that he was just bringing our team down. Whatever tho, thats in the past.
But I just put that out there.. I know he wasnt a great coach. But he was a classic JEts head coach tho.
Dakar… you gotta admit that it was great having him on the team.
Herm, Chad, and Curtis Martin for life!!!! J/k… hahaha
-
i wonder why the jets didnt make a run at lito sheppard he is only 26yrs old he and revis will be perfect together?
-
I know it has been mentioned already, but I appreciate all that Robertson did for our team and wish him the best in Denver. He was never a trouble maker, played hard in a defense that was not made for him and played injured when he could have easily sat out. He worked hard, got drafted high and made a lot of money which is not his fault but ours. Maybe he never lived up to the #4 pick but he was a good addition to the team and didn’t take away from it in any way.
Good luck D-Rob!
-
He was not worth what Herm gave up for him- I hope Tangini learned from past mistakes- DRob will be back to his old form in Denver- a good player- a positive note the better he and Vilma do the higher the draft picks next year, and what a relief on the cap. Now we restructure a fair deal for Baker, if he does not take it we will have enough draft picks next year to replace him, he will play this year if not well we have a former pro bowler as back up, not bad- maybe he will resemble another former probowler who was said to be washed up last year. Finally lets sit at six, a good player will be there!!!

That is quite a bit of money coming off the books. Wonderful.
