Are the Panthers the Matt Ryan Deus Ex Machina?

In greek plays, the Deus Ex Machina (god out of a machine — which is Latin .. hmmm) was the device that supernaturally carried the protagonist out of danger. Based on my Drunken Doomsday, are the Panthers the Jets’ Deus Ex Machina? Here’s what Hashmarks says this morning.

” … McShay said he’s been hearing the same thing I have in recent days. If – and this is a huge question mark – Ryan gets by Atlanta at No. 3, look for Carolina to make an attempt to move up to try to get Ryan.

The Panthers probably would have to get ahead of Baltimore at No. 8 and that won’t be easy and might not be possible. But Carolina’s interest in Ryan is no smokescreen. The Panthers believe he’s the best quarterback to come along in the last few years.

They’re also staring at a situation where Jake Delhomme is coming off Tommy John elbow surgery and there are no guarantees. The Panthers are high on Matt Moore and Brett Basanez – as backups. Getting Ryan would give the Panthers a long-term option if Delhomme goes down again or isn’t the same player he was before his surgery.

If the Panthers are willing to deal, let’s hope that the Cats recent dealings and trust with the Jets makes this a deal they are more easily able to do with the Jets than the Patriots.

  1. Brian – good meeting you last night. Keep up the good work!
Check out this mock draft from DJ Gallo @ ESPN, you’ll actually be suprised by the Jets pick…

  2. I’m hoping the scandal has left a bad taste in the rest of leagues mouth and everyone either shuns them and rips them off in a trade.

  3. A downside of being a Vermonter is missing Jet fan reunions. I hope it was fun.

The Panthers cannot afford to deal with the Pats and not us. If word gets out, the Ravens will move in front first.

If Ryan is still there, whether the Pats move up or not, we should be able to pick up a second or get a pretty good player.

  4. that’s what i’ve been saying all along. ryan dropping to 6 isn’t doomsday – it makes our pick that much more valuable.

  5. This will be good if Ryan is there @ 6, assuming the Chiefs stay at 5. We would have 2 teams bidding for Ryan, Panthers & Ravens. Thus the Jets trading down seems more likely and not a bad fit as the Jets need more picks.

  6. If Ryan is there at 6, I dont think its a great situation. I do not think we have any chance of trading with Baltimore unless the Panthers make a run for the #6 pick which will then cause Balitmore to inquire about what it would take for them to beat out the Panthers, but thats banking on alot of what if’’s.

  7. But if we do trade out with Baltimore, who do we take at 8, CB out of Troy or LB out of USC?

I think the safest pick with be to take LB Keith Rivers, rather than a CB Leodis McKelvin. Hes kind of a reach pick at 8

  8. Not sure if Rivers can play ILB for Jets. McKelvin has generally shown up from 6 – 10 on most mocks for quite some time, so I don’t think it’s that much of a reach,,. I’d prefer him over Rivers – imagine Revis, Rhodes and him in a secondary for the next 5-8 years!
