Buzz: Three Interesting Draft Morning Rumors
Posted on April 26th, 2008 by Bassett
Watching SportsCenter and here’s the three interesting Draft Day storylines that SalPal, Wendy Nix and Rachel Nichols are reporting.
- Nichols reported that she spoke to Arthur Blank, owner of the Falcons. She asked him if he wanted to make a ’splash’ with the fourth pick. Blank — maybe wiser after the past year — answered that he’s not looking to make a splash … which makes me think that he’s handed the keys to Dmitroff … who will go D-Line.
- Wendy Nix noted that Carl Peterson has told her he has two offers on the table (likely the Ravens & Pats) for the fifth pick.
- SalPal said that a close source has noted that Matt Ryan wants to play in Baltimore and that GM Ozzie Newsome has two contingent trades (with the Chiefs and the Jets) to move up and get Matt Ryan.
Stay tuned … the drama unfolding beore our eyes now …

I think that would turn a really ugly situation around pretty goddam quick. If the Pats move up to Gholston and we have a deal in place to trade back to Baltimore, I could live with that. That is until Vernon Gholston makes an entire career out of stealing D’Brick’s lunch money.
One more thing. If we trade down with the Ravens, and perhaps even the Panthers, expect a second trade down in the first round if Sedrick Ellis is on the board. Once we concede interest in the stars, any top 15 pick will work and an extra second or third might let us move up with our second for someone we need and still have two seconds or a third.

Two points- A- Take Matt Ryan and hold him hostage, that way you are guaranteed to get SOMETHING for him, even if you have to get Baltimore to throw a 3rd, you get the extra pick and don’t reach as much on your player.
B- If you can keep the ball moving, by moving back, you can keep adding picks. Once you hit 20, I think MIA, ATL, KC, CHI, BAL and CAR may like one of the ‘2nd tier’ players, and if the Jets think this draft is deep they can keep adding 2nd and 3rd round picks.
I want Groves, if they can’t get Long.
D’brickashaw would eat Gholston up all day. Gholston has zero pass rushing moves, and Ferguson’s feet are more than quick enough to protect the edge. It’s funny, one of the things I think about when it comes to Gholston is whether or not it would concern me if he were on Miami or New England, and it wouldn’t concern me in the slightest.
If the move is back to eight, I would think McKelvin would be the target. But maybe it would be Harvey, or maybe it would be Jonathan Stewart.
For some reason, I dont think the Jets are infatuated with Gholston. I agree w/ seanmac, McKelvin wouldnt be bad or Stewart or Harvey. More picks the better as Tangini has showed what they can do with picks, sans Schlegel in the 3rd round couple years ago. If McFadden and Long are gone, and Ryan is there I pray the Jets trade down.
You don’t even entertain the notion that Gholston can’t physically overpower D’Brick? I’m not saying you’re wrong, it just seems that Vernon has a complete physical advantage over Brick and could bullrush all day.
‘can’ physically overpower. I suppose that was a Freudian slip.
It would concern with if he went to Miami or NE, because even though Parcells and Belicheck aren’t 100% perfect, I trust their talent evaluation. If they feel he is worth taking #1/trading up, the Jets probably missed out on something.
No, I don’t think Gholston would do much of anything against Ferguson. Gholston gets his sacks by getting moved in front of less athletic players who can’t handle his speed off the edge- it’s not a coincidence that he got most of his sacks against Big Ten right tackles or against lesser competition. Ferguson is a superior athlete to Gholston, he has quicker feet and a much bigger body. The best thing for Gholston to do would be to try and get into Ferguson’s chest, as that’s where D’brickashaw tends to struggle, but that’s not really Gholston’s style. Gholston is Dwight Freeney without the spin move- he’s just going to go up the field (actually, that’s giving him too much credit, as mostly what Gholston does is stand around on the line of scrimmage), and that’s the kind of player that Ferguson will eat up.
If Gholston is in NE he won’t line up over Ferguson, he would be rushing from all over the field. Again, if he is good enough for NE, he is good enough for me.
Fair enough. I’ll hold you to that scouting report.
Latest rumors on NFL Network
2. C. Long to Rams
3. M. Ryan to falcons
4.????
who the hell knows what al davis will do. I could see someone moving up to 4 to get Dorsey. This scenario possibly leaving the Jets with McFadden at 6.
Anthony,
That’s no way to go about evaluating talent. Maybe he’ll work out, but from the scouting I’ve personally done of Gholston, the scariest thing he could do is step up to the podium and hold up a Jets jersey. The guy simply doesn’t play with even minimal effort on 95% of the snaps.
Michael Smith is on ESPN saying that Long is St. Louis’ pick. I couldn’t quite tell if he was working from source or opining. Still that’s the best case scenario for the Jets… unless you want extra picks…
It’s the worst case scenario if Long is your top choice, as he is mine. If St. Louis goes with Dorsey, there is a decent chance Long falls to five and we’re in position to go and get him. If Long goes here, then Dorsey goes third and we’re stuck with either Gholston or Ryan, which is a much less attractive set of options.
Seanmac- A- I don’t want Gholston. My uncle turned me on to him before teh championship, I keyed on him and all I saw was his ankles all game long, when the zoomed to the pile and he jogged up every play.
B- That is my not my football eye saying that, but generally I know the game well, but defer to guys like Belicheck and Parcells. I am 99% convinced he will be a ‘nice’ player, no Ware or Merriman, but if Bill Belicheck or Bill Parcells think he is worth the #1 or trading up, I will definetly 2nd guess my opinion. I don’t have game films and I am only exposed to what McShay and Kiper tell me, plus whatever games I have watched. Scouting football from home, for me, is absolutely imperfect, because like someone said regarding Robert Gallery, you miss on guys from Iowa because they are so well coached, you confuse technique with skill. We don’t know Gholston’s responsibilites on plays and whatnot. That being said, he is a doggggggggggggggggg
that is if belicheat and parcells ever liked gholston. we really dont know that for sure.
although seanmac probably watched alot more, thats what i saw out of gholston myself; a guy who didnt pursue in the running game and worked the outside speed rush, which in the nfl takes you completely out of the play half the time.
i’ve read the jets discussed parameters to move up (long?) or down. hope those deals are in place and actually viable.
no gholston, no ryan.
I’m going to be ok with the Jets picking Gholston. From what I’ve seen, he’s much more effective standing up than playing down. There is also a question of scheme, as OSU tends to use their defensive line to open up plays for the linebackers, so it’s possible that Gholston was reading and reacting and that in a scheme where he is allowed to pin his ears back and go after the passer that he’ll be better. I’m receptive to those arguments. But I’m hot and bothered over Gholston, and I’m certainly not going to worry myself over his going to New England. He’s one of the riskier picks in the top ten, but he has good upside and fits the defense. I’d rather go in another direction, but I’m willing to withhold judgment on the pick.
Do you this Jet team? I would feel different if ‘Herm’ picked him compared to ‘Mangini’
Do you TRUST this jet team
I wouldn’t. The Jets drafted reasonably well under Herm and Terry Bradway. That said, I think they’ve drafted exceptionally well under Tannenbaum and Mangini. Whoever they take, I’m likely to be fine with (though I’ll be a little concerned about McKelvin or Gholston).
Well from the ‘03, ‘04 draft, (17 picks) only Jerricho Cotchery remains on the roster. Some were traded this offseason and most never panned out in the NFL. The only thing Herm was good at was motivating, not coaching or scouting. I think the Raiders will take McFadden if they cant trade out of 4 spot. I could also see the Patriots jumping ahead and taking Gholston in KC’s spot. Leaving the Jets with Ryan, and the only option at that point is trading down.

For those who think Bradway was incompetent.
A- I dont think he was incompetent
B- Not drafting a bust doesn’t make you incompetent, it makes you an anomoly
C- I know they switched systesm twice, which causes growing pains, but even that 10-6 team lacked talent. There was just no outstanding talent on the roster, compared to other top teir teams.
Gah! Would you quit posting that stupid article? Dewayne Robertson is not the 10th best 1st rounder drafted in the 21st century!
No, but he’s clearly the best #4 pick taken between 2000-2003.
Here’s Matt Mosley talking about the same thing:
Jets have quietly found first-round formula

A general manager I spoke with late this week said he thought the Jets wouldn’t be able to pass of Darren McFadden if the running back were available with the sixth overall choice.
The team hasn’t drafted a running back that early since the Blair Thomas Project in 1990.
The Jets have quietly produced an admirable first-round record this decade. They haven’t hit home runs, but they have found quality contributors in almost every case. Nine of their 11 first-round choices this decade lived up to expectations, a league high.
Their first-round choices since 2003 have started nearly 93 percent of regular-season games with the Jets. That is a remarkably high percentage. I ran similar breakdowns on the rest of the AFC East and the NFC West. None of those teams’ first-round choices during the same span had started even 70 percent of games for the teams that drafted them.
The Jets need to improve at quarterback. They could use a running back for the long term. McFadded might be too talented to pass up. But when I think of what has worked for the Jets in the first round, I think about building along those lines. Their free-agent moves shored up the offensive line. But with Robertson heading to the Broncos by trade, the Jets could do worse than bolstering that aspect of their team.
