My Drink Induced Doomsday Scenario

by Bassett on April 26th, 2008 at 1:39 am

During the time talking the conversation came up to me … Brian what do you think is going to happen tomorrow in the draft?

I have a lot of faith in Tannenbaum, but all the same, I’m bracing for what I consider a worst-case scenario in my book, but let’s face it, this worst case isn’t so bad if you end up with a potential franchise Quarterback.

Allow me to lay out what I see as a very likely … maybe most likely scenario and what I would consider my doomsay scenario:

1) Dolphins – Jake Long (OT) Of course we know is locked in for the Dolphins already. I think this was who the Rams wanted.
2) Rams – Chris Long (DE) – With Carriker already inside, the Rams do need help on their defensive line to stop the run and the pass. Last year the team ranked 17th against the pass and 21st against the run and Chris Long helps upgrade both areas. The fact that Dorsey has gone to the wayside in the last 24 hours indicates that Long fills a need for the Rams. Pray that the Saints have the juice to move up and take Dorsey here to start this chain the right way (which would make the Falcons take Ryan at three).
3) Falcons – Glenn Dorsey (DT) – If you are hoping the Jets should avoid Matt Ryan, this is the first shoe to drop. The Falcons have needs all over but Dorsey is the guy they most covet, Mike Smith and Tom Dmitroff will be very happy to take Dorsey here.
4) Raiders – Darren McFadden (RB) – With the top two defenders off the board and a No. 1 QB from last year, the choice of McFadden here sates Davis’ need for speed, for sticking it to his coach, and as Adam Schein said, gives Al a player who he refers to as comparable to Marcus Allen.
5) Chiefs – Vernon Gholston (DE/OLB) – Edwards is on the record as saying that the team needs 6-7 starters from this draft, which is a clear signal that drafting Matt Ryan would be a premature move. The question here is whether Carl Peterson and Herman Edwards think Vernon Gholston or Ryan Clady present the team with starter quality play at No. 5. With Jared Allen gone and since this is a doomsday scenario, I take Gholston. If the Jets aren’t going to get a trade for McFadden, Matt Ryan (stupid alcohol) I’d like to see the Bears or Panthers move up to take (Ryan) here.

This then leaves the Jets in the tough situation of seeing Matt Ryan staring them in the face. I think that Matt Ryan could be a great quarterback, but I just don’t know if taking him at six is the right move for the Jets. The team has done everything they can to make the world think they love Ryan, which leads me to believe that they want people to think they want him.

Continuing my doomsday, unable to find a trade partner, the team is forced to select Ryan, or reach for a player like Leodis McKelvin.

Brian, Why is it then that so many beat writers think that selecting Ryan is a smart decision? How can you after watching Chad and KC play last season think we can afford not to draft Ryan at #6. How much of their incompetence can be blamed on the OL, and how much on a lack of tools and ability?

Better yet, why would you select another running back when we have 2 good ones, or another undersized DE moved to OLB when we have 2 getting paid a tidy sum already.

When you think about it having Ryan come to us without having to trade up is a blessing, and think of all the things you can write about him starting in pre season when he beats Chad and KC for the job.

  2. avatar DSmizzle says:

Bassett, in that scenario, you take Ryan, hands down (barring a possible trade, of course, but lets play the “you have to use this pick” game).

I can’t say it enough… if the offense is playing extremely well or even “pretty good” under Clemens, then just pretend its another pick that made them that way, because at this point, Clemens isn’t a sure thing (though certainly a guy with plenty of potential).

In my mind, this is far from the perfect scenario… but when is the last time the JETS drafted a QB this high who people around the league were all over? Truth be told, I’m ready for them to take this chance, and if Clemens ends up being Drew Brees to Ryan’s Phillip Rivers (though hopefully better), then I’m not upset by any means!!!

  3. avatar Jay says:

i have news for everyone – Matt Ryan will NOT be a Jet…it just won’t happen…if our guys are gone then I guarentee you they’ll trade down or take a DL/CB – we just CAN’T spend a #6 pick on a QB…come on guys keep the faith – DMC will be a JET in 2008!!!!

  4. avatar 40oz says:

    Heres my drink enduced scenerio:
If were straing Matt Ryan in the face at 6: TRADE DOWN
    Hes not worth it.
Get a coner, wr, and rb in the draft BUT DONT PICK UP MATT RYAN big mistakek like lam jones
If we do howver get a chance at either Mcfadden or Gholsotn, you have to take it. Period

  5. avatar Sean says:

I just did my mocka dn it looked exactly like this. I was forced to ask myself what the Jets do in this situation that looked so unlikely just a few days ago. Based on that the Jets love value and that S. Ellis doesn’t fit in the 3-4 i think the Jets will take Ryan but i hope not.

  6. I’d rather trade down than pick a QB. Get Kellen a speedburner or a6′ 5″ go to receiver in the red zone or another stud offensive tackle.

  7. avatar green duck says:

worst scenario is Long, Macffaden and Ryan gone when the Jets have to pick, leaving them with a real bust potential in Gholston.

if there is something we know about Tangini is they would always get their guy and not wait for scenarios to develop.

on my view Jets want either Macffaden or Long (slim chance on Ryan) meaning only one thing – they are going to trade up !!!

please remember what was said before: having done so much work on free agency allows gang green to have the draft come to them…it is possible they would get two or three guys they WANT in exchange for current and future picks, that is if the aim is to win now.
please remember that front office considers this year as a deep draft

    good luck to us all

  8. avatar James in TN says:

I’ll take Ryan over Gholston any day of the week. Better yet why don’t the Jets trasde up if they really have someone in mind. If C.Long is what the FO really wants there is no possible reason to wait and let chance take over. I prefer we get DMac or C. Long, and if not available we trade down with Baltimore for a 1, 4 and 6

  9. avatar James in TN says:

    trade ,sry

  10. avatar LI JET FAN says:

Look for the Jets to trade down with Baltimore the most likely partner if the playeror players the Jets wanted are gone. Trading with Baltimore allows them to get their guy in Ryan and gets the Jets a 3rd round pick. Worse case is the Jets keep the pick but don’t hand it in allowing teams to pass them but helping them in terms of slotting and salary cap implications.

  11. avatar Chris says:

If that’s the scenario, someone get Ozzie Newsome on the phone. Stat!

  12. avatar MS says:

This scenario is scary, but I would think the Jets have done a good enough job selling the idea that they like Ryan. If this happens you call Baltimore and tell them were taking Ryan. They will give us at least a 3rd round pick to move up to 6th. We slide won and take a CB or maybe Ellis. Maybe slide down one more spot since Cinci wants Ellis.

  13. avatar Jason says:

Just heard that Baltimore can not trade their 3Rd round pick. It is a compensatory draft pick and league rules will not allow it. So, if Ryan falls to us I do not think Baltimore will give is their number 2.

  14. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

mark my words the jets will trade up to #4 with the raiders for our #6 and one of .our de. mark my words mcfadden is our guy!!!

  15. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

basset, i think you’re totally wrong – not on the scenario (that’s very likely) – but on the jets reaction. It’s only a worst case scenario if the jets pick ryan, but, I think if Ryan drops to 6, it increases the value of that spot to other teams….you’re going to have the Panthers, bears and Ravens immediately on the phone trying to get that pick.

The jets could then trade down a couple of spots and still get one of Keith Rivers/Leodis Mckelvin/Rodgers-cromartie.

  16. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

As a follow up, this is my doomsday scenario…(and sadly, perhaps the most likely)…

    1 – j long
    2 – dorsey
    3 – ryan
4 – mcfadden (this is the key, as they pass on the legacy)
    5 – c. long

6 – with ryan off the board, there is very little interest from other teams to trade up. the saints consider it to get sedrick ellis, but decide that the ravens are a better trading partner. the jets are then forced to pick gholston. – and he becomes one of these players who looks like a franchise defender once or twice a year, but for the most part is just slightly above average.

  17. avatar John says:

What really scares me is that McFadden seems to be the consensus fan favorite, which in most cases means he’s going to suck in the pros. No question he’s an enormously gifted athlete, but he’s too much of a risk.

If the Rams take Dorsey, I think Atlanta takes Ryan, then Oakland takes Long and KC takes Gholston. If we’re lucky, we get a call from Jerry Jones, if not, we take Run DMC, and maybe we still get a call from Jones later in the day. I would rather have, say, Limas Sweed and Brandon Flowers or if you want a RB, Felix Jones, later in the 1st, than McFadden. Also, on some mock draft boards, the “Experts” have players like Phillip Merling, Aqib Talib and Jerod Mayo all still around later in round 1. If we can get picks 22 & 28 from Dallas for McFadden, assuming he falls to us and Jerry Jones is willing, I hope we do it..

  18. avatar neil herschkowitz says:

There is risk associated with all draft decisions. Sometimes that risk is in not selecting a player and finding out the mistake you made when that player produces result with another team.

We took D’Brick in front of 2 first round QB’s and instead selected KC in the second round. Based on what we have seen that was a mistake.

We now must pay for that mistake by taking a risk and drafting this QB to make up for the mistake in the previous draft and to hopefully get a franchise QB.

I happen to like Ryan, and yes I understand the risk associated in selecting him. I feel he has the tools to take us further then who we now have. He did not have a great surrounding cast at BC, and he accomplished some significant stats all things considered…and beyond the stats I liked his leadership mentality and feel he fits our team well.

  19. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

just because the fans want a player doesn’t mean he’ll suck. We wanted sapp – he was good. we wanted keyshawn – he was good. we wanted marino – ok, he sucked, but the rest were good.

fans usually want players on offense because it’s a “sexy” pick, but DMC is regarded by many SCOUTS as the best player in the draft.

  20. avatar Brandon "You're With Me"riweather says:

*felix jones is not going to be a starting RB – he’ll be change of pace back. DMC is the only true starter in this year’s draft.

  21. avatar RAJ says:

The Ravens will trade with the Chiefs to grab Ryan if he is there at the Chiefs 5th pick. The Chiefs want Brandon Albert.

Geates quote of the Cowboys signing Pacman Jones comes from a Dallas TV sports beat reporter:

“If character really doesn’t matter, why don’t they sign Osama Bin Laden to play wide receiver? They need one, he’s six-four, and we know nobody can catch him.”

  22. avatar John says:

To me, Felix Jones is just a name at the RB position that has a first round grade. Maybe Jonathan Stewart falls to 22, maybe they don’t take a RB at all. My point is, we probably need another CB, depth at DE and ILB or a tall WR before we need a RB, even one of McFadden’s potential. This is all a crap shoot, anyway, so why not give yourself another “roll of the dice”, if you know what I mean.

  23. avatar jvsvn says:

The fact is that the Jets are in a good position at #6 with many options and opportunities. That means it will be a real test of the quality of the front office. There are a lot of things that they could do. Take Ryan, trade up, trade down, etc., etc., They will have the opportunity to make a good move or the opportunity to maks a bad move. What more could you ask for? If they wind up blowing this pick, it won’t be because of some “doomsday scenario” that unfolded outside of their control. It will be because they made the wrong choice out of the many options they had.

  24. avatar jvsvn says:

Personally, I don’t see the jets moving up but, if they do, it will be because there is one guy they decided they just have to get. For different reasons, that would probably be either be DMac, C. Long, or Ryan. Having given up a 3rd and a 5th in the Jenkins deal, I think the Jets are seriously looking to trade down. In that case, having Ryan on the board would be a blessing because he would inspire the best trade opportunities than other potential picks at #6.

  25. avatar steviek says:

i dont see the cowboys moving up to 6. i can see them do it if mcfadden falls further and the value starts killing jerry jones.

Hey John, you don’t know anything more about football or the JETS than the posters here who want DMC. Git over yourself boyo!

  28. avatar Dan Breen says:

It seems to me that the biggest “nightmare scenario” of all would be that Dorsey isn’t selected in the 2-5 slots, and Ryan, McFadden, C. Long and Gholston are. That leaves the Jets staring at one player with #6 value – Dorsey – at a position at which they don’t have a need (DT, in light of the Jenkins acquisition). Unless somebody further down the draft is going to make a deal for Dorsey – and I suppose that somebody could decide that his value at that stage is worth trading up ahead of the Bengals and Saints, both of whom need DTs badly – you’re going to be left with either a luxury pick (and the Jets are not in a luxury position!) or taking a guy, one of the corners, perhaps, who isn’t worth the pick.
